Guild Wars is f2p. You think ROM is better than that? That's crazy talk.

I most definitely consider RoM better than GW in many aspects.  The whole non-persistent world, nauseatingly repetitive PvP, and quirky character controls that don't respond like you expect them too being the most notable.

And if you love GW that much, why are you trolling the RoM forums... oh right, the separation anxiety thing... got it.

I can understand your dislike for Guild Wars but please do not spread lies about it. The character controls are very fluid, there's nothing wrong with them if you are used to controlling character movement with your keyboard and mouse (like WoW), and to say that PvP is repetitive, is just utter bullcrap. The different ways you set up your skillset can change the way you play your character and you can always change them when not in a battle. Maybe you disliked the group PvP but that's no reason to lie about the game.

The character controls in GW were anything but fluid.  I remember when switching directions quickly my character would do this odd looking swivel turn that was very unnatural.  The PvP was repetitive because it was just battleground (or whatever you call it) after battleground.  No open world PvP or large-scale PvP like you'd expect in a MMORPG.  No unpredictability like getting jumped out of nowhere and having to think fast on your feet while questing or whatnot.  It was always the same thing with different scenery (and not much variety at that).  It's always your team vs. another team.  I could take it for about an hour tops before it just became too repetitive.

MMO games would be pretty cool if it weren't for the people.

In my experience the controls for GW were excellent. The nature of PVP in GW is the tactics involved with the different classes and the great number of skills available to each class and how they counter each other. It's all about "guilds" and teams competing in the name of the guild. It's not about bushwacking other players. You may not like that kind of pvp, but obviously millions of others do.

Been playing in the beta since December. The recent massive change to the combat system has destroyed this game. Most classes are now nerfed to the point that it is a super grind. The GMs on the forum actually have the nerve to say it is "to let the player enjoy the content LONGER". That is hilarious. Translation: grind and spend in th CS to try to relieve the grind a bit! This  is really sad, because it looked like a good game. It is also quite underhanded to suck in the beta players with one thing and creat a nice starting player base, then pull the rug out and destroy their characters. These people are the typical sleazy f2p bunch.

Update: They finally "released" the game. What a joke. The nerfing of most classes was not fixed with the release patch. This is a big grind and the lag is terrible. Every other toon you see is a mage because the other classes suck. What started out as an awesome f2p game is just another money grubbing endeavor.

I also note since release, and the "Great Nerfing" the rating here has dropped from 8.4 to 8 in a week. Expect more of the same. But now you can buy an ostrich mount for $18 bucks or so!!! That's their idea of a game improvement. If you haven't played it get a copy of Guild Wars for $15 on ebay or amazon. It blows this CS grind away.

First question is did you spend any money in the item shop. Actually do not answer that because by your posts I know you didn't.

That right there makes any opinion you have towards this game or developers invalid as its not you keeping this game running. This game will do fine without your money, oh wait it wasn't getting it in the first place.

Now what people gotta understand is these games cannot be made for free, they cannot be maintained for free, so that being said whats the problem with having certain aspects rely on the cash shop. Gimme a break, there here to make money, there not money grubbing company, there an actual company.

Lets look at nerfing, you say they nerfed all the classes, but go on to say mages were OP. If you had any video game knowlodge, any at all, you would understand to even out classes to a "balance" doesn't mean reduce damage on spells or certain skills, it requires stepping back and looking at the whole picture. WHy are they OP to this, or to that. Because of this its easier and more efficient to "nerf" then to buff.

P.S, there opening a new server, so by there numbers there player base is increasing, thats a fact because they would not spend more money if they didn't need to. There adding 2 more classes. So yea, just because you probably sucked at this game and got "roflpwnedbbq" or w/e crap kid talk you guys use, does not mean this game sucks.

For F2P this is by far the best out there. It truly is, do not believe the OP's slander.

You think if somebody has not spent in the cash shop their opinion of the game is invalid? That's absurd. I'll let that statement stand as representing the worth of your entire assessment of the game.

Yes, I spent $40 in the cash shop. It was a complete waste of money on a poor game.

Yes I believe if someone has not spent money on a f2p games cash shop has no opinion. That completely makes sense as they are not contributing to the games core (production costs). If you were in there shoes my statement would ring true.

Who makes updates for the games? The company.

Do the employees of said company work for free? No

Where does the money for the employees come from? The game

In a f2p game where does the money from the game come from? Item shop

So basically unless you buy something you are not the one paying the wages of those employees he create updates, content and fix bugs and issues. Because you are not contributing to the game moving forward.

But your not one of them and not contributing to this game ( I do not believe you spent any money) you may have posted about it, but thats a lie. Wanna know how I know? Its easy. Because yor ranting about the cost of the game, you want the best gear in a perfect game without spending money. Thats what I get from you.

Casual gamers don't need perfect gear, so they wouldn't quit a game because it costs some cash for the best in slot gear juiced up. Hardcore gamers do what it takes o get the best gear.

Cheapskates wander from mmo to mmo quitting once they realize hey have to invest in a games future to get the best gear

I'm not a liar. Don't call me that. Neither shall you call me a cheapskate. I'm rather sure I could buy and sell you. As I said, I'll let your statement that if somebody isn't investing in the CS they should not express an opinion about the game be evidence of your measure.

Whats amazing that your gripes with the actual gameplay of this game have been shot down in this thread, and now you only defence to this game sucking is a cash shop.

Why do people expect game companys to make games for free? Next time you go to work (if you work) tell your lead that hey, lets do this all for free, lets give away all the stuff we manufacture and maintain for free!!!! See where that gets you.

Funny how you took that cheapskate to heart, at no point did I indicate you, but yes I called you a liar because I honestly believe you did not buy anything, does that make me a bad person? No, Im calling your bluff, as you have no proof of it its just the way its gonna be. Let it go.

But yes unless you plan on investing in this games future i.e giving them money, you have no say in how this game runs. Go tell a big name company like Apple to poll a bunch of people who will never buy a Mc product to see how apple can do it better and there opinion and see what they say. They will tell you the same thing, unless your investing in the future of the product your thoughts and concerns are useless.

Its the f2p way, people can enjoy the game for free because others spend more then a monthly fee to play, so let it be. I spend $15 to go to a movie, for 15 bucks I can buy a neat little digital item I can enjoy longer? Sounds resonable to me, and to others. But hey I spend money on stuff I enjoy. And because of that mentality this game is free to others.

Take your bad arguement somewhere else

There is no dearth in this entire thread of people including myself that have substantive claims that this game is lacking. Try reading them.

Spend your money on it. Encourage others to spend money on it. Have fun with that. I don't care if you love the game. I don't care if you want to recommend others play the game. The problem is you seem to rankle that somebody else holds the opinion that the game sucks and isn't worth the money. And that is messed up. It is also typocal of the people in this thread that like the game. It shows what kind of folks one is likely to encounter in the community.

Have you ever considered just stating that you think the game is good and why, rather than attacking others who hold a contrary opinion? Probably not.

The game was starting to get somewhere then they dropped the ball with a major combat overhaul like one week or less before release(march 2009) which lost a lot of the playerbase and left some classes totally wrecked. That's it in a nutshell, and I don't think they have recovered from it.

So, basically.....yeah.....avoid this game.

I have to agree with you completely. I too was very hopeful until they did that patch. I was so enthusiastic I threw them some cash just to help them along. I didn't need anything that required cash at that point. But because the content was lacking, they figured they would nerf the classes and make what content they did have last longer. The longer you're around, the greater chance you will throw some money in their pocket.

The best? There are a ton of negative reactions to this game. You would think the best f2p would get better reviews than that. Truth is, the experience has been a fiasco.

This game isnt F2P - free to play, for me its Play to pay ;), Really, players i knon spending a lot of cash in that game, i dont say this game isnt fun or else. But Item Shop give to much advantage to paying players, those items at shop should be for fun like mounts etc, but 70% items give so much advantage in game. Ofc no1 tells you must pay, but without diamonds / items, no way you can make harder instances etc.

you will be able to finish the harder instances with chapter III, if you spend money or not. The are actually implementing a dungeon difficulty system, so you can easily change to "easy" and go through it without millions auf MATK, Patk or tons of Lifepoints. Sure, drops wont be as good, but hey, there HAS to be an advantage for the paying players.

I am not paying and totally fine with the point that im not able to rush through new instances like the ones who are constantly buying diamonds.

Tumbling down the rabbit hole?

Played Rom for a while, but my wallet was burning from diamond purchases. Returned to a sub payment model for my own good in games like WoW and later LoTR (after quitting WoW). Never again.

They were quite nasty to you. And if anybody thinks for one minute these guys have any other agenda than making $$$$ they are mistaken. They have nerfed the classes to make the grind longer so you have more exposure per content and spend at the CS more, especially when the grind tempts you to get some boosts that cost real money as well. It's all part of the sleazy plan. Free my butt.

Even the GM in the forum said we want you to "appreciate" the leveling more!!!

... and they will make far more than they ever would with a strict subscription payment plan.

The basic concept is pretty obvious to anyone who's followed MMOs for a while, is familiar with the prevalence of RMT and can put 2 and 2 together.

Even when it's a ban-able offense, people will *still* spend $30 or far more on in-game items, money, etc. Some people will spend *hundreds* on a character. So, it's quite clear that there are people who have no trouble blowing money if it buys them a sense of "beating the game", "being competitive" with other players, or even merely "getting ahead"... whatever their personal justifications for it (not enough time, etc).

RMT didn't become the huge business it is because people don't like spending real, tangible money on intangible pixels.

Eventually, MMO companies saw how much more people spent on RMT compared to how much they spend on a subscription fee... and a light bulb went on.

It's great if an individual can play a F2P without ever spending a dime and thoroughly enjoy them self... but make no mistake, those people are the exception. They are not the target market.

That's the irony of calling them "F2P". Despite no subscription fee, there are people spending *far* more on the Item Shops than they ever would on a subscription. And that's exactly what the F2P MMO makers count on.

Just was checking the game rating/hype list here. I see EIGHTEEN free games rated higher than Runes of Magic. That's no surprise to me. I have said it sucks from the end of beta. Hopefully this thread has saved a few peeps from being bilked out of their cash.

After being completely fed up with  WoW's so called "Patches" and maintenance days that turn out to take weeks to recover from, I  decided to stop handing over  my money to Blizzard and find a good F2P.  Luckily, I ran upon RoM.

I'm not sure what all the belly-aching is about. RoM is a great game!  It has all the things I wish WoW had and without the price tag.  Dont blame the game if you are spending your cash in the item shop.  This is how they make thier money. However, they do not have to have yours.  Self-control is key.  I'm on a natural high saving $30 a month (I paid for two WoW accounts -- mine and my son's).  And if I decide I need a mount or pretty wings on my back, it will be a whole hell of a lot cheaper than what I'd grown accustomed to paying.

LMAO played ROM for 6 months and spent $15. As usual F2P games are only expensive if you make them so, the only person bilking your cash is YOU. Game was really fun and filled a gap nicely for me. No longer play but i would say if you are looking for a game thats F2P try it. You will have to fork out for a mount but thats it. Plenty of people walked everywhere though, personal choice.

I played it in beta, but I left it when ROM got released.

I don't see your point but I guess I haven't played it enough.

And I returned this week and I enjoy the game, I might spend a bid on the cash shop when I get to a higher level

Tossing in my 2 cents as an active player:

I played RoM during closed beta as a priest/mage. At that point everyting was way out of proportion, the rogues were doing massive amounts of damage for their level, scouts were strong in their own way. Then quit for awhile due to massive imbalances and slow progression from the localization team.

Started back up again in November '09 and still playing today. RoM has come a long way since then. Sure they release some crappy patches every now and then, but that's the trend these days even with AAA title companies. My biggest complaint about RoM is the dungeon curve. They expect players to be fully stat'd and tiered out by the first dungeon at level 25. The last boss in this dungeon takes a few mins to kill even for the higher level toons. But, that's also one of the better aspects of RoM, even a higher level can die in lower level instances if they aren't careful. It's not impossible, just improbable.

The early levels are experiementation levels really you just burn thru them testing the game wether you like it or not, not really paying attention to what's going on. It doesn't feel as grindy. The mid levels start to feel a bit grindy, I thought about quitting a few times but decided to stick it out and see where it goes. Once you move into Ravenfell and Weeping Coast for higher level quests, the stories get interesting. That's another thing I would like to stress. Runes of Magic is a story driven game. If you play for the loot/pvp/dungeons, you will be sadly disappointed. Every quest line has a story with it. Some not as good as others, but still a story, and they all weave together in some way.

The way I see it, it's a nice filler game to occupy time. Once you finish the stories the game is pretty much over. You can run dungeons over and over until your eyes bleed, or you can PVP and complain that "such and such class is OP!"

With Ch.3 coming out there will be some major adjustments to the game. On the website they seem to be for the better, but we'll see once actually applied to the game.

I would also like to add, this game seems to be made for the MMO veteran. A lot of the player base are new to MMO's and struggling to understand. At least on my server, Govinda.

There isn't a group doing what *you* need to do cause simply the world doesn't revolve around *you*. You can't expect people to be available when you want, while you weren't available when they wanted you to be... They are all busy doing that solo quest you were doing 5 mins earlier or you will do 5 mins later on. This is the reason that groups don't form on games that focus on solo content.

Well, many have said here that to be proficient in the end game one needs to spend quite a bit. So not being up front about that would be bilking to many. But hey, if you liked it good for you. But there are many many many games rated higher on the game ratings here., and many in this thread have had severe criticizm for the game. Do you think all those people are just bellyachers?

I wouldnt compare ratings of any games, especially F2Ps, and especially game sthat have been out over like a year. They rarely do re-reviews/update ratings, and most of those ratings youre seeing on there are ratings based on when those games came out, 3, 4, 5 years ago, not in comparison to newer games. Once in awhile theyll do a re-review of some of the more popular games, but even then i dont believe they actually change whats listed a sthe rating for th egame. Would be kind of nice to have constantly updating ratings to put things in comparison, but that would require a pretty large staff playing every MMO a decent amount on a constant basis. Since thats kind of ridiculous to do simply for ratings, they give it an initial review & rating, and then leave it, even though as of today the game would get a 3 or 4 instead of the 7 or 8 it got back then. Hell, just look at how many games that flopped horribly, never had a decent amount of players, were f2p, shut down within a year, etc that are rated as high as games like WoW, Aion, Darkfall, LOTRO, etc.
