Yes. Essentially, that's precisely what can and has happened. Furthermore, since this mechanic is flagged indiscriminately (either via Report Spam or the /ignore function), and the GM staff is spread quite thin, there's very little recourse to determine whether or not a disciplinary action was merited, or if the system was abused. You'll simply be assumed guilty (of something) by both the playerbase and customer support alike.
I strongly urge subscribers of the game to not take this matter lightly, and to politely insist Cryptic/Atari suspend such policies until "false positives" can be eliminated completely. |

If true, that is indeed yet more fail. I actually supported the mechanic when I thought it was just "report spam" by a certain number of players that silenced a spammer, along the statement that anyone abusing the /report function would be disciplined, but this is different. WTF is the point of two separate commands if they do the same thing? |

yep, you can sanction the abuse of /report (as it is meant for gold spam, offences, oscene language and such), but you can't sanction the use of /ignore (i don't have to explain why i don't like someone and want to have him blocked, i'm free to /ignore the whole server if i want so) |

Have there always been a large group of conspiracy theorists in the world, or is this a recent phenomenon? |

What conspiracy? Read the official forums; the devs aren't exactly keeping it a secret how this mechanic works. |

It's true. I've personally been told that's how it works by two customer support reps. The game does not distinguish between /ignore and Report Spam for the purpose of automated discipline (silencing). I gotta wonder how many people may have been silenced already just for chatting in German, Spanish or French. |

Guess what? Just got silenced again for 24 hours. No explanation. Customer support ticket has yet to be addressed. Can't send a GM a private message (silenced, remember?), and posting about it on the official forums violates their guidelines. |

This. There have been several threads on the official forums, where for example Person A is having a conversation with Persons B, C, etc in Zone Chat and all the other people disagree or dislike Person A's opinion so they mass report him/her for no valid reason.. So Person A gets punished simply because of it. The devs know about it and are working on another method of use. |

With all due respect...no, this is totally on Cryptic. Other games manage to have report spam functions without causing this drama. If I report people for spamming in any other MMO I've played, they better be spamming, or I'll likely see action taken against my account. If Cryptic isn't taking action against people abusing /report, that's on Cryptic, not the community. If /ignore is functionally the same as /report spam, that's Cryptic's fault, not the community. I can ignore someone for any reason, but I can't report them just because I feel like it.

some of the issues with the sto site i think stem from the nature of hyprer trekkies the complaints about marketing are silly- trekkers are the people that buy all that peripheral crap this leads to people that are devs on the site- like doormen at club 54 during its heyday- they found themselves in what many would consider an enviable position- then things did not work out- i suspect in their mind they wanted to really get this trek thing going- and then with presumed power - faced with distressed customers- they turned into something far worse than "cryptic" or game companiy employees and desicion makers fact of the matter is- sto's community is the problem |

Easiest way to combat this /report grieving option is.. Person that is silenced because of a group of jerks, reports to a GM.. GM investigates and if they see there was no just cause for the /report...... EVERYONE that had reported the victem recieves a 3 day suspension from the game.. PERIOD.. Punishment and Deterent is a wonderful tool.. Use it.. |

Originally posted by Rydeson Except it sounds like Cryptic is too retarded to think of the abuse of this system. You can't talk to a GM because your silenced for 24 hrs. Isn't there a support e-mail you could write too? I mean how damn stupid IS Cryptic? I blame Bill Roper. I think his stink is on this. Thank god I didn't buy CO and I wasn't remotely interested in this game. I tried a trial and it was just really boring. This sort of crap going on churns my stomach. People complain about WoW but at least their ignore function doesn't work like this. Are they just sheep over at Cryptic? Did NOONE think "Gee this is ripe for abuse?" |
