Originally posted by Wizardry My guess is it's intentional since the players are supposed to fill the blanks with their cities and the like. The issue here of course is that:
A) You need a lot of people on the server to make that happen, and SV have said they're looking to get relatively few subs to break even on. Plus the fact that so far the servers haven't really demonstrated they can handle any large number of players.
B) The players need to have a point to owning the land. Right now, given how empty the world is, there isn't really a point to owning a particular piece of land other than for the sake of it. The only things you can do right now is craft weapons and armour and kill other players. |

Originally posted by Neoptolemus If this was a themepark game, with faction warfare and the like, I would say yes, we need some kind of territory control incentive or other reason to hold land. However, in a sandbox game where you have the ability to ACTUALLY control territory, and build structures on said territory, and otherwise "own" a piece of the world, there really is no need for that kind of crap, especially since most devs get the absolutely terrible solution of "Lets add a gear incentive 8D!" which ends up breaking the whole mechanic because people will exploit the hell out of it to grind the most gear as possible from it. People in UO owned houses/castles for the sake of owning houses/castles. You didn't need some artificial bullshit goading you to buy it, nor did you need some lame reward mechanic to circle someone elses house and bring it down/loot it out. There is no need for an artificial "point" to owning land in Mortal, and such things are BY FAR the last thing the game needs to worry about right now as it's not even functional. Bans a perma, but so are sigs in necro posts. EAT ME MMORPG.com! |

In the case of SV and MO, it is definitely NOT intentional. About a year ago, when SV was asked why the world was so small (community was expecting more space), they replied they'd rather have a small rich world, than a big empty one. --- |
