OP  2/21/10 11:40:22 PM#1

About 7 months ago I started playing EVE (after finishing the trial at least 5 times) and I honestly had fun. The community was extremely helpful and I found someone to take me under their wing and give me some guidance. After playing for about a month, I had to quit for personal reasons but now I am finally back.

I ran and finished the tutorial missions. Currently I am doing the epic-arc encounter.
I got about 1.4 mil isk in the wallet and the following ships: 2x Badgers, Bantam and a Condor.

I have a total of 2.7 mil skillpoints trained. Here are some highlights:
Learning skills- 4 (some at 5)
Electronics- 4
Engineering- 5
Weapon Upgrades- 4
Missile Launcher Operation- 4
Caldari Frigates- 3
Spaceship Command- 3

Where do I go from here? Should I keep running the missions? I would love to experience some PvP but I am still pretty much clueless with the game. What skills should I focus on?

All help is very appreciated. If someone is willing to take me under their wing, my in-game name is Ragana Canidae. I listen and do what I am told so hopefully I would give you as little grief as possible.

Thanks ahead,
Tomas

Keep going with missions for earning ISK right now, I'd say.   I'm sure others with better direction will be along to give their advice, but my .02c worth follows;

Consider the Social skills that will affect your mission bonuses and faction approval (Broker Relations, etc) - they'll pay off in the long run, as do the Learning skills.

As for taking skills to level 5, I don't bother unless I need to for another skill. The time/sp it takes is just so long compared to the bonus (for the most part, ymmv).  And you have better uses for that time now, so worry about maxing skills later, if you need to.

Learn up the skills you need to fly and fight the missions, and look to whichever ship/weapons that will be needed for the higher level missions.  Get the skills needed for a solid tank, then work to improve it to tech 2 as you can afford it.  When you look at a ship, or item, check for any variants and see what prerequisites are needed, then plan accordingly.

I see by your list that you're Caldari, so missile skills, like you've started with, are always good.  The Caracal would be the cruiser missile boat to head towards, if you're continuing the missileer path.  Caldari ships shield tank, so skills to support that will be high on your list.

I wouldn't recommend PvP until you can afford to lose ships and equipment.  Starting up an alt for PvP would cut into your learning time, so not sure I'd suggest that either.

Considering joining a corp - Eve University comes to mind, and learn more about the game that way.  Some corps won't take a new player on, either fearing a spy or lack of SP (skill points), or various other reasons, but that one caters to teaching new players.

Without rambling any longer, just remember to keep your Skill Queue topped up.  Don't waste downtime without a skill in there.

Red vs Blue for PvP. You can join and leave at will. So you can bear during the week and PvP at the weekend.

Hmm, well!  Your a regular spring chicken :)

Generally you want to come up with a plan for gaining standings with your preferd faction with a view to (eventually) running level 4 missions.

So research which agents, based in high sec have the best standings to you, start from level 1 agents, then look at level 2 agents see where they are located and try to compile a rough 'Action plan' for agents.

Work on an agent until you have the standings to work on the next agent! (sometimes you even go from a level 1 -20 quality agent to say a level 1 quality 5) until you get to that Ideal level 2 agent - in High sec, with high quality.

Once you've got a rough idea on your agent path, next you need to  plan which ships your going to progress in.  Personally I went - Frigates - Cruisers - Battleships, skipping Destroyers and Battlecruisers.

Some level 2 missions in a cruiser can be quite difficult!  So plan your skills so that your learning tanking skills before going heavily into DPS.

Other skills to weave into your plan is learning skills (get the advanced ones Quick as possible! even borrow money to buy the skill books) and standings skills (connections)

Specialise specialise specialise.

Try and figure out early on what your going to specialise in, I was Gallente so I specialised in drones!.. and ships with drone bonus's, some people specialise in guns, or missiles etc..  but whichever you chose STICK with it! and stick to one race..  it maybe boring but worth it for speeding your way up to level 4's ASAP.

Just keep doing level 2's until you can get into a Battleship.. then hit the 3's and thats when money and standings starts rolling in.

If you want to pvp, either go join red verses blue for a bit, or grab a ship and go roam around lowsec looking for a fight. you'll lose your ships, but thats why you insured them...

the only way to experience pvp is to go and pvp, flip cans, ransom people, fail, get concorded. savour the adrenaline, learn.

ignore anyone who says you need X skill, Y ship or Z money before pvping, if you can fit a warp disruptor, you're good to go.

Its _possible_ to pvp with very little,  but its really not advisable for a new player, unless your supervised.  ie, join a corp.  a new player has a lot to learn.  He doesnt want to be led by the hand and have everything done for him, he needs to learn a lot first and encouraging him to slap on a disrupter and hit low sec is not going to be any kind of fun.

Its important to remember that pvp in eve is more of a battle over information, knowing how to obtain the information is the key to success.

A new player will learn more from losing 12 rifters than from KM whoring a thousand industrial kills with 20 mates. But I take your point, flying with an experienced FC will teach you a lot.

IMHO I think it really depends on how you want to play the game, are you a people person, or are you a self reliant person?  Me, I've never been much of a team player, and prefer to forge my own path along the space lanes.

My two cents:

  • If you are Caldari then get the skills for a Battlecruiser and get a Drake. It is the best sub-BS ship for doing missions and pretty damn good for PvP as well.
  • Train Advanced learning skills to atleast level 3
  • Get atleast +2 implants (+3 if you think you can afford it)
  • Get Eve Mon for setting up skill plans and Eve Fitting Tool for trying different ship fittings. Those two tools have helped me immensely
  • Once you got some base skills and cash and want to get into PvP I would suggest switching to Minmatar ships. They got a really nice boost in the latest patch.
  • Try to find a player corp to show you the ropes. I have heard Eve University is a good one
  • Stay safe (i.e. dont wander into lowsec space unless you are ready for getting ganked) and be careful of people that want your ISK. There are tons of scammers in Eve

I'd say:

Join a corp. Many corps accept new players and learn them the ropes. It's also a lot more viable to have a corp with, say, 10 people teaching you stuff than one guy teaching him "his way" of playing Eve.

That being said.. If you want to pvp, a corp is almost necessary - although you can just join Factional Warfare (which, I've heard, has it's ups and downs), if you don't want to get stuck with the same people for too long (or just like freedom).

Run some missions, get some iskies and an idea of combat and fittings (although pve is far from pvp). Evemon is a great tool for skills, and Eve fitting tool (EFT) is great for fittings (although, keep in mind that EFT doesn't give you 100% accurate data, also because they're all made with a theoretical perfect setting (ie your opponent is within your optimal, standing still, and so on))

I'll send you an evemail, though, in case you have more questions. Getting several peoples opinion is usually a very good idea - especially in Eve (Some will tell you Minmatar ships are the best at PVP, some will say Amarr, etc)
