I was going to buy this game, but due to the gpu problem i have decided to wait until its fixed,  and/or most ppl dont have a problem with it (also most mmo at launce are not stable untill week 3/4,>

but apart from Sto trying to run the cards at max fps, what i think its doing is getting the cards to draw more power (watts) from the psu as they heat up, in effect shutting ppl computers off, -due to lack of power to the rest of the system(intels cpu auto shut down)

(besides most of the ppl that are haveing this problem seem to be runing the game at max settings- im not saying not to run the game at max, or they shouldent be able to right off the bat,  not at all, but maby trying to tone it down a bit and see if it helps them from frying thier graphics cards, haveing to spend x $ £ to play a game the way you whant isent the idear of fun,

(i had to buy a new graphics card years ago just to play eve online (2003) and it took me over a month after i had allready entered the code for the month free, (to get a card) then more then a dozen e-mails after a GM promised that id get it back, untill they relented and gave me two months free,   plus a brand new computer just  to play aoc,

what im saying is, everyones computers are fine untill they run Sto, which is -

a) finding the cards that are not 100% (thiers always going to be defects in anything)

(buy a pack of 100 dvd-r and i find 2-3 are not working) every time,

b) sloppy code that they know about and will never admit to <most likely,

(since i dont have an account yet -why im posting this here,

ps: i cleaned my cpu/gpu/com of dust the other week, and if i had of bought the game and my graphics card had died i would have been p*ss if someone had said its dust/cooling problem to me,

this is not a rant, or flame thread for the game, just an observation so far on Sto.

Hows is that the devlopers fault?  If ur pc shuts down due to overheating or lack of power. Thats not the softwares fault.    Thats a hardware issue. I dont know of any DX functions that call for hardware to pull more power than the manufacturer designed them too or one that causes it to magicaly over heat.

Most power supplies suck.  If youve worked on comps for a long time youll know this.  Also cheap power supplies dont always output there listed wattage when they get old.

Vid cards specialy the current ones use alot of power I mean alot compared to a few years ago. Its not like STO is doing some voodoo to make ur system break.  You or who ever you bought it from didnt build it right.

Now my system gets hot playing STO, real hot but not dangerous hot and my system doesnt shut down.  It just turns it into an expensive Heater.  Again not the devs fault.

If ur overheating add in new fans or better yet make sure you have good air flow.  Dust isnt the cause for all overheating issues.  If your system doesnt have enough power to supply ur parts when there at full speed then get a stronger power supply also check the voltage.  Theres more to a power supply than just 650w you have to check each ratings specialy if u got a highend graphics card or doing sli.

If the game ran like sh*t and stressed ur system I could understand blaming them but  Dont blame them for you buying power hungry hardware and you not designing your system with enough power and coolage (is that even a word?) to meet its deemand.

I bet half of the ones with there comps shutting down OC or bought a factory OC part.

I am running on an I7 920 quad core with a nvidia GTX 285. I have water cooling on the cpu itself and 6 fans in the rest of the machine. When I am playing STO, the temp on my front panel display on my computer goes to 50c during the game. I do have settings on more than max. I have went in and updated the view distance to 300% and set the AA to 8x. The game runs great with no slow downs while in a large fleet battle. However, if you play for several hours, I can definitely feel the heat coming from my machine with it getting up to 50c. But at no time do I have a problem with it shutting off. It doesn't even max out the temp to set off the temp alarm.

So I would say that the issues you were describing seems to be an issue with those computers. More than likely, not adequate enough cooling.

Ive had issues with the game causing my comp to shut down and having to restart the comp alot. Hope they fix this soon. Glad to hear mine isnt an isolated incident.

The engine Cryptic uses in CO and STO is very GPU intensive, moreso than most mmo's I have played. As they enable more and more graphic options it will tax your system more and more. If your system is rebooting then that is likely due to your gpu getting too hot due to the demands of the game. This same stuff happened in CO when they enabled more graphic options and everyone and their mom was maxxing the game out on their older machines. I run CO and STO on a Asus laptop at max graphics with no issues.

I would try reducing some of your graphic options mate.

Cheers!

I had no troubles at all during the beta, and my PC isn't exactly top of the range, being around 3+ years old now.

ha ha i got to laugh at this you dident even read my post correctly, -

I Dont have the Game,

if you read correcly, i said- the game (software) is tellying the cards to produce infianit frames, which is heating up the graphic cards, yes thier heating up and the majority of them is fine, but the 1%> the are always not up to spec due to manufacturing, are probably the one being effected by this- due to the game, (by what it is asking of the cards -reveling the faults in the cards)

so it is the game - (and the cards)

you ask-Hows is that the devlopers fault - becouse even though they have been told about it several times they have yet to do anything about it- as in apart from the quick fixs of /maxfps -perframesleep 10 (which are stop gaps themselfs,

nothing in a quick patch to tell the game to do it itself,

and i also said make sure you read this - the majority of the posters that i have read on the graphics card problem -seem to have thier setting on the maximum they can get it, thierfour reveling the faults in the cards -while playing Sto -which set to infinate fps, heat up draw power from psu =shutdown,

so

1) its is the game, due to the code frames/sec = infinate,

2) its the cards being faulty (which one in every x will be,

3) the players  cranking up thier game to the max (why shouldent they) and revelaing the problem -

4) games that are just launched are like this for the first 3-4 weeks -so know wonder its like the way it is,

lag/dis con/ coppy play/bugs, not working as inteded/ several features left out, ect, ect,

(if 1% are faulty and thiers 1 million subs =10,000 faulty cards)

(and i do agree with you on the psu being not up to scratch - my computer for Aoc had 250 watt, -now i never had any problems playing Aoc, or anything else -but a good while after i had played it (about six months the psu started makeing a hellva noise, and i got a new one 355 watt which is an extra 105 watts,

so in effect its all these things not just one persion or company - as i said its an observation on Sto -

no flames intended, i dont whant to argue over a game thats only a week old -i just know what its like to want to play a game and not be able to due to graphics-

weather to it being software/hardware or both

one things for sure thier haveing a problem with Sto, connected to the graphics ,

like i said id rather wait and see what happen over the corse of the next few weeks, then dive on and be one of the ones that cards burn out which shouldent since it uses 35watts :P but still better to be safe then sorry.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

pss: may also add i beta tested Aoc, on a laptop -which ran fine no problems smooth -untill the end pvp which i couldent even move due to fps/lag, then i played live on my laptop at 3-8 fps (on europe launch i couldent get on for the firsts hour 1/2 due to ati problem, lost a few names to it ;)

a week later my computer i orderd came and i played on 20-50fps - but the live version was inherintly more unstable then the beta was - and wasent stable untill week 3 (i didnt get booted/frozen pc after it)

what im saying is game mmos that are just out are unstable untill at lest a month after launch, but dont expect them to burn out cards even if they are faulty or not.

I always wanted to do water cooling.  How much did it run you? Any problems with condensation?

The water and block/s would have to drop below ambient temperature. That's not going to happen in a normal water loop so condensation isn't an issue. Throw in a chiller and then you'll start seeing condensation.

On Topic....I agree that the problem is not the game itself but the stress the game causes. Any weak link in the system, like a flaky PSU or poorly cooled case, will reveal itself easily. I noticed STO is heavily GPU bound. Most games don't run near the load this game does. A game that is GPU dependent is not a bad thing. The GPU is better suited to handle the task in most cases. It's not a fault.
