It is better to be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.
OP 2/02/10 5:51:30 PM#1
I know, I know. Probably seen enough of these, but I had to do this, for the sake of new players, and those nerd-raging, biased folk who have expectations that differ from what Fallen Earth desires to deliver.
Now, I am not a "new" player per se, to Fallen Earth. I played during Closed and Opened Beta, so I know the many changes that have been made since. I received my Return Trial email 10 days ago, on the 23 of January. I signed up for it, and started that day. My trial ended today, February 2nd.
First I will list the things I found were better than they were 4-5 months ago:
New Player Entry -
Much, MUCH better. Now one doesn't feel instantly overwhelmed and lost when they enter the game. I believe it gives players just enough information to start playing, without giving them too much that it forces them to play that way.
Now, not to say, it couldn't be a LITTLE better, having noticed questions in Help still cropping up, but I believe that is more a lacking on the player's side of the spectrum.
Almost unrecognizable from it's incarnation a few months ago. Big towns like Embry still have drops in FPS, but it's not as frequent, or as harsh as it was before. Outside of that, the lag and drops in FPS were almost negligible to the point it didn't even matter.
Though, now and then, I would get a slight pause, but I think that had more to do with either my ISP or my habit to Alt+TAB.
Mob AI -
Still needs some work, but much better than it was. No more wacky super sprinting, teleporting freaks of nature. Though, still some issues with Aggro, and there were a few occassions of mobs vanishing when they spotted me, only to reappear right in front of me, then rubberband. (S2, Bad Signal Mission, CoG Camp)
A point of major contention with many players. Though i honestly fele many are just jaded by other games that boast "prettier" graphics, I feel FE's graphics are absolutely amazing. There is gobs of detail ALL over, from a lone, stray tire, to the shelves of various supplies in the stores, to the little teddy bear sitting on the bed of a second floor room in Midway. The colors, the atmosphere, the feel of the world gives you this sense of forlorn loneliness and solitude. this feel that hope is almost lost.
To me, the graphics and style are very realistic for the setting. and with the recent upgrade, only made them better.
Now that we've gotten that out of the way, onto the Pros and Cons. These, to me, are my sole opinion, and in no way influenced by other players or other reviews. These are what I feel make FE awesome, or feel FE needs some work on.
I will list the pros, a short blurb on why I feel it deserves to be listed, then a small blurb on it's cons and what could be done to improve it.
Full Crafting -
Why: Making Crafting meaningful again. It's no longer just a sideshow for the completist gamer. It's something one almost HAS to do, to make it in this world. A world where human ingenuity is all we have.
Improve: Though crafting is deep, I feel it isn't deep or customizable enough. Adding in more styles of clothing (Female clothing), more colors of the existing types, and more flexibility in what we can wear (Instead of boots/shoulder pads being a pair, making a single boot or shoe, or single shoulder pad, like gloves are currently handled).
Why: Very different from your average MMO, it takes a little more patience, a little more skill, and forces one to pay attention. No more Auto-Target/Auto-Attack nonsense that makes the game easy. Now one has to continue to focus on the enemy, whilst attacking, and using special abilities or mutations to win.
Improve: Animations could use some work, and my biggest gripe, a lot of the specials have little to no visual confirmation beyond some sparklies. There needs to be someway for us to visually register an ability worked. As of current, many of my abilities sit there, unused, because I have no idea if they actually ever worked. Smash and like, one other are the only ones I know have worked, due to the floating numbers/words when they hit.
The World -
Why: AMAZING. Full of rich details, life, and feeling. You really do feel like you are stranded in a world that suffered from a great cataclysm. The world is just gorgeous in my eyes. I love traveling it, riding my horse or ATV along the wide open plains, seeing the amazing detail and work the dev's put into the world. The fact that it is also open, with seamless instancing few and far between, makes the world feel really, really huge.
Improve: Really not much that can be done to improve the world, beyond adding the ability to go into the water. Probably my only real gripe is the fact water has a forcefield.
Why: It forces me to enjoy the game, to explore, to look around and admire my surroundings, and to look for things. Many find this a barrier, and you know what, i'm glad. It keeps those out who feel the game is all about the end. to me, this makes the game about the journey, the path you take. It also allows one to truly admire the huge open world.
Improve: BUT, I do understand the gripe of it coming from a community/clan/roleplay standpoint. The long travel times DO make it a challenge to really allow for large events, especially when players can be scattered across the very large world. I won't reiterate the numerous suggestions alreayd made, but I will say, we do need something to allow the community to connect/join together better.
Classless/Skill Based -
Why: Probably my biggest issue with MMO's and many RPG's in general is the way dev's force and shoehorn players into restricted roles. You are either a tank, a dps, or a healer. No in-between. But with a skill based, classless system, this tosses them old conventions out the window, allowing a player to be what he wants, how he wants. No restrictions. You can be a tank and a dps, or a healer and a tank, or a new hybrid altogether.
Improve: Mainly balancing issues. It seems that Melee is "Easy Mode", and Rifles are "Hard Mode", with Pistols somewhere in between. And the fact that Support/Healer types aren't really needed. I know this is sort of forcing the old conventions, but I do think things should be made a bit more viable, to make grouping a more viable option.
Why: Oh man, so much to do, so little time! There is ALWAYS something to do, something to find, someone to kill, or things to make. There is no end to what you can do! Explore, hunt, scavenge, craft, PvP, missions, gambling, etc. This honestly, besides City of Heroes, is the only MMO where I havn't gotten bored before lvl 20.
Improve: My only real suggestion, and from the State of the Game recently, the Dev's are going to do, is adding in more things for players to interact with one another. The Blood Games is a wonderful idea I can't wait to see in action. Also, MORE VEHICLES! =P
Why: This is probably the best community i've ever had the pleasure to be a part of. The players are friendly and helpful, the GM's are always on the ball, and enforcing the rules, and willing to come out and fix an issue. I love it. I have never felt more apart of a community than in FE.
Improve: like many others, the only issue is the lack of a global chat. I understand the why's of it's exclusion, and I have heard the Dev's are not going to add it, but...I feel it will ultimately hinder the community as a whole. Without the ability for players to communicate without having to join a clan, or be in the general area, the community will feel somewhat fractured.
Well, there you have it. My opinions of the game from my 10 day trial. It was a freaking blast. And come by birthday in 2 weeks, I will be an official community member, thanks to my mother for getting me the game.
A definite buy!
The game has come a LONG way since beta, the dev's are working their tails off fixing issues, making the game better, and bets of all, adding in free content expansions. The game still has a ways to go, but it's only been 4 months into release, and Fallen Earth shows amazing promise.

This is the only game on here i dont nerd rage about. FE has all the things i want
1. Alot of cummunication from Devs
2. When i have a problem i get help within 24 hours
3. updates on a regular basis
4. No sub + item shop - i get EVERYTHING with my sub fee
5. I feel like I am listened to when i post my opinion
6. Great community
7. Deep gameplay (this is relative but its sure as hell deep enough for me)
Its by no means perfect, but i dont need perfect if i can have the above 7 points.
Currently Playing: Fallen Earth
