Ok I will admit I never thought I would say it, but after coming back and playing SWG for about a month I must say I am loving it. Is it what it was when the game launched? Sadly no. But neither is any other game out there. I have found in SWG I can actually RP, I can live in a universe, visit planets, fly ships. In short I can do the same things I did 5 or so years ago when I first started up. So why do we hate this game? Because they jerked our chain by pulling that CU crap and taking away the freedom and joy we had prior to the NGE? I was pissed then also, but it is time to move on. SWG offers more freedom, more "sandbox" then any other game out there if you allow it. I ignore the PvP crowd, I do the quests and meet the people who are in the game because they enjoy Star Wars, not just cool gear. What I am saying is forget what you have heard, forget the past and give the game a try. It looks like a whole year till Knights of the Rep hits the shelves. SWG has potential, it just needs the player base to come back and give rise to a community of dedicated fans. Well that is my view at least. I am Llewellyn, I am a BH on Chilastra and I approve of this message. |

I could deal with dated ( heck i hit UO or ragnarok on occasion) but the game play is horrid, and its nearly impossible to learn to love it unless i was a former fan which im not. Also the whole fact that SOE is bribing players doesnt sit well with me and goes to show that the game is on its deathbed. |

You're right. It actually is fun and entertaining (this coming from a preCU/NGE vet) - its great for roleplay aspects (at least on Starsider, don't know the rest). A lot of the hurt and pain comes from the nerfs and removeal of what we were use to. It also hurts us to go in and see this universe as it is because we look at what we had and how it all fell down. I've played the game multiple times after the NGE. It's just sad that's all - its like seeing your own child leave you, a piece of you goes with it. Its the broken promises that came with SOE and SWG, its the planned overhauls that were collapsed, it was all an individual aspect really - with the NGE, there's not much individuality in play style (in character yes but style no) if you are a Bounty Hunter then you are just like the rest of them, if you're a smuggler, you're just like the rest of them. The old way was you could be more then a bounty hunter, you could shape things differently and be fully unique. This all went with the NGE. Some of us took the CU and tried to deal with it, it was okay for most but it wasn't great. A lot of people could still play like they use to - it was the NGE they hurt us. (On a different note - they called it 'New Game Enhancments' but for must of us - it wasn't Enhanced at all, it was just a new game, there was nothing 'enhanced') And this is why a large group of old players are looking forward to that single group that have dedicated their time to reviving that old way... its been a long journey. Another thing that hit us was specfically with the NGE - Jedi became a regular class... this was not at all Canon! When SOE/SWG said when it takes place you need to stick with it, Jedi were since extinct and only a handful remained and they all feared for themself, it was a secret path. (The Village took some of that away, but it was still acceptable to many). But to stray from you given timeline hit hard - or at least it did me. I hated seeing everybody and their cousin running around with flashy lightsabers when they should be concealed. (This would have been entirely different had they chosen a DIFFERENT TIMELINE - you can't go expanded universe within the movie timeline, it doesn't work.)
But as I said, it still provides entertainment, it still appeals to many - but to a lot of us, we just can't see it in this light (And the bribing of SOE is another thing) there was a lot of letdown when the game kept moving forward, eventually it just became to much and we were left broken.
EDIT: Oh and it's 'Star Wars: The Old Republic' no Knights, it's not part of the knight series =D No, its not a big deal |

I agree, the Jedi class becoming a starting class was out of line. A lot of things SOE did were out of line and way off of canon. I know Star Wars, trust me, and the game is a bit off. But people say the same thing about WoW, STO and other games that try to create off of an established work. Go and re-read Star Wars books published before Epsiode 1-3 were released, alot of the material is no longer valid based on what we now know. It happens. If it was ok for people to be able to unlock jedi through grind what is the difference in haveing them as starters. the game has it problems to be sure, but name one that doesn't. My point is that I hated SOE for what they did to us also, but i like Star Wars, and others out there are like me may be on the fence about the game. And as for this game being on its death bed, we have all been saying that for years and despite it all this game is not dead, mabey that should tell us something. Will Old Republic kill it? Mabey. But that is still at least a year away. Leave the baggage behind you and try the game with a fresh and open mind. I have played 95% of every MMO out there and this game is no longer the rotten apple in the barrel. However, this is my opinion, and for some this game will never be, but those on the fence...you never know.

The ONLY thing returning players would "fix" is population issues...assuming they pay the $50 to transfer their toon off a server SoE swore they had no intention of closing last year at this time. SoE has done this to themselves. This isn't about "haters" vs. NGE...SoE is the root of the problem, not the players who opt not to spend their money with them.

Just want to add, i'm a newbie to SWG [thanks Steam for a $10 special] , My initial impressions were horrid (tutorial is crap, bad collision, bad animations, clunky combat) . I even got Vanguard and EQ2 (nice little SOE-bundle), both are more polished than SWG [yes Vanguard indeed is more polished] ...guess what? I' still get drawn back to SWG, somehow. Just walk into a cantina....show me an MMO where you actually see -players- stand around in a bar, dancing, talking and trading ??? I am on Starsider, and i was totally astounded by the amount of activity going on in what was what i thought was the "newbie town" where you start on Tatooine. The ever slick EQ2 got no "real" comparitive community roleplay feeling going there, there might be lots of "LFG" in the channels, but you just don't walk into a town and see 30+ players roleplaying around......you do in SWG... So there is certainly some charm in SWG left. I actually spent the entire night idling about in the canteen/town talking to random people....i did not gain a level in the last 8 hours of gameplay (i'm only lvl 10 btw). Anyyyhow, SWG is good in one thing: It reminded me what an MMO should have, NOT this solo-leveling, 5-man dungeon instanced crap where you never see anyone and if you do, it's a mad rush to the next level cap...no time to stop for a chat nonense.....

I was playing the game shortly after it came off the shelves so I have been there, but I haven't played SWG in a few years. SWG isnt what it used to be but it is on par with other options. But that is my opinion, expressed for those who might want to try the game again and that is the reason for this thread. Try not to take it so personel.

Just for the record SOE didnt invent the zombies, they took it from the EU. And there is no concerted effort on SOE's part to put 'come back to the game posts' here so take off the tin foil hat Burntvet, no black stormtrooper choppers coming for you today. At any rate I didnt want this to turn into a SOE slam fest. I was just hoping to suck a few RP'ers into the game to make it more interesting for the time it has left. Once Old Republic goes live I wont be in the game, nor would i spend money if i were a new player and buy the game. So for the rest of the thread, if your a disgruntled old player, I feel your pain and I know where your coming from, but there is no reason to post it here anymore. But if your a Star Wars fan, if you have the game sitting around, and you wouldnt mind hanging out in the Cantina and then shooting up some Ties, then give the game a try. If your not in that category, what joy do you get in posting the same things said for the past 5 years over and over again. Just move along let the thread run its course and go about your way, obviously these arnt the droids your looking for. |

Hey Tux, The fix for the battlefields is on TC now and will be live when GU15 hits live (no more multi story buildings). And lag is much better now for most people (50 vs 40 in restuss was NOT a slideshow on Flurry, and Hoth no longer lags). The devs are making a difference. |

Anyone who wasnt around Pre-CU etc, probably wouldnt understand, nor know exactly what was lost with the NGE, and find it hard to understand why the players walked away, with so much anger, the Vets inevitably will stay away, for the most part. SWG's community was ripped appart, it really had the best community i had ever encountered in any game, perhaps it was because it was one of the first player based economies.. interdependency.. not just a word in SWG, i've tried returning to SWG as a player, but, it just didnt work out, it just re-emphasized what was lost. |

I was a former SWG player. I was part of a big guild on the Scylla server. We had a huge, popular city on Naboo. I had "been there and done that" from day 2 (because really, who was able to log in on day 1) up until the NGE. For kicks, just yesterday, I returned. I had a few old school guild mates that wanted to try it out again (since the MMO industry is just filling space with crap [I just came from the STO beta, lol], and the wife even said she would try SWG. (The wife saying she try it in itself was a miracle). I subscribed, knowing that my server was shut down. I filed a ticket, and within an hour had a response. SOE, FOR FREE, moved my toons from Scylla to my new server. To all those that hate what SWG has become, why bother posting.? You're wasting your time. To those that say "you weren't there, you can't know." WRONG. I was there and I did know. As mentioned above, it's not the same. But, it is different, and has it's pluses. Yes, it's not perfect, but no game is. I have a long resume just like every other poster. I don't need to justify the game, or SOE. The server I was on last night had a "heavy" load. There were people all around. At least 8 others just in the tutorial. My guild, who got through, said they saw people everywhere on Tatooine. I don't know if a lot of people are just coming back to see what's going on, or maybe people are sick of the new crap being spit out and coming back to something that has 6 years of depth... missions, crafting, etc. There may be bugs, but at this point, what is the difference between them and other MMOs? I've played LotRO for years (lifetime sub) and it still has bugs. Luckily, I didn't bother with last years fails, Warhammer and AoC. Not that I can say first hand, but sounds like they were plagued with bugs. And AION, great if you want to PvP and play gank the newb. So, really, SWG may have some good life left in it. Heck, if people come back and actually try the game rather than just continue the rampant bashing, maybe SOE would actually allocate more Devs to do something. But, it looks like they've been adding a lot over the years. Sorry, this went way beyond what I was going to post. /rant off LotRO: Meneldor: Riders of the Riddermark |

Indeed, that's my surprising experience too (as i mentioned earlier). As a newcomer you tend to assume you will enter the world alone, maybe see the odd veteran rolling an alt with you, but you'll essentially run around like you're in your own single player game. Well that's how the new MMOs work (if anyone noticed). Now i might be new to SWG, i'm not new to MMOs. In Warhammer i had a brief moment of "hey there's other people here!" feeling with the RvR (the few times it did happen). Age of Conan you'd see others players only to be slaughtered and ganked before you could do a /wave emote. EQ2, well there you dont' see anyone at all, maybe they're hiding in their guildhalls or houses, but you just don't see players..and if you DO see them, they're AFK or making a super-sprint for the nearest harbor bell. Vanguard, same, huge gigantic world, lucky to see people actually doing stuff, the newbie island you might catch players in the crafting spots, but out there in the open..good luck. Ironically, WoW has cities like Oggrimar...nothing tempts you more to continue playing when you arrive at your lowly level , seeing tons of players duelling outside the city gates, milling around the bank, coming and going from the flightmaster. Some might say WoW is so big due to all the polish and such, i'd say it's that social factor. People play WoW because other people play WoW and you actually SEE these other peopel strutting their stuff....you don't enter WoW and feel you're in a single player game do you? I'd say the newer MMOs, the instanced AoC ,Champs and even STO are all missing the social boat . The world feels static, it does not feel like you're sharing it with a thousand other players. Even Fallen Earth which alot herald as the latest SWG veteran savor, they are missing the social boat BIGTIME. Yes, they started rectifying by adding pubs/gambling houses..but unfortunately if you want players to commune/socialise you need to design the world better. A linear S1->S2->S3 approach is not it. Imagine Tatooine being a lvl 1-10 zone without a starport and only way to get there is manually travelling there for 30 minutes from another planet only to find nothing to do there beyond your level, that would be Fallen Earth's approach. So it is evedent SWG got a social approach going, and i'm sure it was "better" before, but right now i must say it is better than anything else i've walked into...other MMOs just don't have a socialing factor you are FORCED to join a guild...why?

Well after seeing some of the info regarding GU15 and the possibility for a heightened Glactic Civil War that includes some impact from space I have been looking into reactivating my old account. I had been playing SWG since it started and stopped a few years ago. I had so many good times in that game and nothing, I mean nothing, has ever come close to what I experienced in SWG. I played on Valcyn, was part of a great guild, thriving space community, etc. I enjoyed what we had before the NGE, felt some pain when the NGE was dropped on us, struggled past it and kept in game due to my many friends and that wonderful community this game fostered. You had friends and enemies (that were like friends really) to play with and against. I am seriously let down by what terms for community these days in MMO's. I tried Warhammer and Aion and though I was part of a strong PvP guild wih some good folks in it I ran into more than my share of clowns unfortunately. Also, noone ever seemed interested in roleplaying. In SWG there were always folks that would take the time to add story and content to the game. I did also, and my efforts were well appreciated by many who participated. Heck, I was even given mention as a Player of the Month by SOE for one storyline and related efforts. I am just saying that although some may continue to dislike SOE for what they did, and believe me I can understand that, I do appreciate how others continue to enjoy this game. It has merits that are hard to come by in many of the more recent games released. It is what it is - a game with potential that still beckons. |
