As the title suggests really, is anyone else except for me not impressed by Star Trek online?  The starship stuff is pretty cool but the on the surface combat looks like something out of a 1990's mmo.

You guys must've seen this coming. God I only watched one developer interview regarding STO and the lead designer sounded like a complete idiot, all he kept saying was that the game was just champions with a new theme. In a nut shell he was saying  that they we slapping it together using the champions tech and just adding new assets as he put it. Quite lame if this is how most bigger studio go about game design , not that im at all suprised it was just i never thought someone would be so blatant about it.

If you want to see Jack Emmert make a fool of himself then watch this video:

i think it reveals enough about what to expect in terms of quality from STO.

yeah I know what you mean about not being impressed. I look at the videos that have been released of both space combat and of on the ground action and simply find the graphics outdated and unattractive.

I wasn't, the game preforms horribly (Don't give me its beta crap either, its close to release so this is probally the final rpoduct we going to get cept might be a few more bug fixes), Graphics were fairly bland in some area's the combat system was pretty much ripped out of champions online which also is a pretty fail game from when I played it. Space combat was kinda fun, but got old fast. Overall the game felt like champions online in a diff wrapper, which is a very bad thing, I'm not a major trekkie but even if I was i'd probally still not buy STO.

MMORPG Character Monuments

...When its time for your character to take a well deserved rest...

1/18/10 11:57:44 AM#7

I try to approach each new MMO from a 'glass half full' standpoint. When I first started playing STO beta I was immediately hit with the 'Gahhh!' response. The introductory levels of STO are bad ...somewhat counter to what we have seen with other games.

HOwever it seems that STO gameplay is just a lot slower to what we are used to. If you are the kind of player who loves Mass Pull PBAE grinding, stay far far from STO. ONce I put myself out of traditional MMO mindset and into a more slowed down TNG: 1 hour episode framework, the missions were ok (no,not ubertastic / OMG....but ok) and the variety of fered by the ship equipments,  modifications, and bridgecrew abilities was cool.

STO has a lot of client /server issues atm, Its still beta, but I would be surprised if release is held back a bit.

Thankfully beta is free, so I would highly suggest anyone even considering this game getting in and trying it out ...if only to ensure you wont spend $50 on a MMO that isnt right for you.

I really wanted to like STO.

Unfortunately, it says a lot about a new MMO when one can only play it for an hour or two before becoming interminably bored. Especially at the beta stage when one is typically in fanboi mode.

That's weird because I hate Darkfall, and yet I chose to login to Darkfall over STO anyway.  I thought STO had some pretty decent missions after the tutorial, but the handholding is annoying as shit, I want to go do my own thing and I expect other players do as well.  Also I find that STO has the most cluttered interface ever, shitloads of buttons which do fuck knows what.  When it comes to assigning your skill points, the skills are vague as hell and you have no idea what they actually do.

Well that's my 2 cents worth, your mileage may vary.

Nope sorry to disagree with you, but I'm playing 10-12 hours a day and loving it. Well that's my opinion, yours may be different.

Yeah I thought that it was going to be better honestly.

i really like the star trek movie that just came out, but damn, what a disappointment.  Another wasted IP

You people are really surprised STO is bad? even though even the first dev blogs talked about a bog standard MMO with nothing special? to add to that most recent MMOs are just generic crap anyway. Don't be so naive next time.......but I bet you will lean nothing from this :(

With movies, often times if they are based on an IP, they suck.

An exception that I can think of are the Harry Potter movies.  Maybe the LOTRO movies too. Spider man also.

But a lot of times the movie will be horrible.

STO had so much potential, but they really missed it. The only part that is well done is the character creation. After that, it goes downhill fast. If plays far too linear, more like an adventure game; most missions lock you into a fixed path you have to follow with few choices on how to proceed.

Probably the most disappointing is the space combat.

- First, it doesn't look that much like space; it has too much of a closed in feeling, nearly always being surrounded by nebula.

- Second, the Z-axis movement is very limited, we are supposed to be in open space, not swimming in a shallow pond!

- Lastly, the combat is all flying in circles and hitting the fire button. It feels more like WW2 plane dogfighting or naval combat between sailing ships.

The one innovation I do like is the option to automatically group with other players who are doing the same mission. This saves time and eliminates most of the LFG spam. The ground missions are also a nice addition, but you are locked into a small area with few choices.

I played Earth and Beyond many years ago and while it has several similarities, it was a much better space MMO. I wonder if STO will survive as long?

I'm currently playing Eve, which feels much different. The PvP in Eve is more open than I prefer, but much more realistic. Dying in STO is trivial, your only loss is about a minute of game time. Eve has a great crafting system and the best trading market of any game that I've played. STO lacks crafting and has a minimal market. Compared to Eve, STO feels like you are playing inside a box.
