 This game is just crap.

- The avatar based combat is slow and clunky and theres no way in hell that can ever play out fun in any kind of PVP.

- The ship based combat keeps like an RTS where I can only control one character.

- So far it doesn't even feel like Star Trek, I'm owning Borg right from the get go and people are praising me even though I've just
started. I mean why am I such a massive hero already?

- Theres loading screens all the time like why every time I want to enter a different room do I have to load? Is it so much to ask for each station to be seamless?

- The animations are piss poor, they look so robotic lol.

- Doesn't do a good job introducing you into the game. Even once you've done the tutorial it just throws you out there and it's like wheres the content?

- When you finally do find content it is piss poor and very repetitive. You'll be doing the same missions over and over again. I mean seriously theres so many loading screens it takes 20 mins to get from an NPC to a mission because all the loading slows it down. Then my missions was to escort this ship and I thought there would be enemies but no. I had to just escort him like 5m and job done.

- The graphics aren't good, they look like a 2003 game but with some new lighting effects. However even so the game is stuttering and runs like crap for some reason, it sufffers from the same performance issues of Champions online where everything feels laggy.

Just a horrible horrible game.

Im enjoying the open beta very much and to answer your question about wasting 50 pounds. Steam needs your money.

I was really looking forward to this, but friends have said the exact same thing as you, so I'll give it a miss.

Tbh as soon as I saw it was Cryptic making it I had doubts. I really wanted a company to make the most of the Star Trek ip. looking at their last efforts there really wasn't much hope unless they'd had a complete staff change.

When it goes FTP I might give it a look..like Champions Online lol

I've been saying this for the last year that Star Trek online wasn't going to be what people thought the game was, but no one listened. I've been playing MMO"s for the last 10 years.. my word of advice to you is don't pre-order MMO's unless you are extreamly shure that it's a game you know your going to love.

For the last 5 years the industry for MMO"s has been in a slump since World of Warcraft. There hasn't been very many good games that have come out. Most of them have just been utter garbage. Why you ask? because most of the gaming companys now a days make MMO's to make money (Not saying that making an MMO for money is a problem, because it isn't the problem) but that They make carbon copy after carbon copy of games over and over again. Most of the MMO's now have ideas taken from other games and put into them. They also rev everyone up with game trailers, and nice little screenshots, and people fall for it everytime. Then once the game is out they play it and find out how terrible the game is. The game companys just take their money and run, then work on somthing else.

Back in the old days MMO's were alot better, because the people who made them were not just in it to make money (Even though money was a big part of it) but they also created MMO's in the spirit of gaming itself, because they themselfs enjoyed gaming as kids, and wanted to bring there idea's to life in an Online MMO. Good examples of this was UO, and EQ, and sadly It's not like that anymore.

That is why I don't Pre-Order MMO's anymore, and I'm glad I don't because I would of wasted hundreds of dollers on such terrible put together games as they put out now-a-days

The game brought out by Cryptic. They don't have a very good track record. Do your research before purchasing an MMO.

I've been playing STO since the start of closed beta, and I'd have to categorically disagree everything the OP has said.

I got into the last days of closed beta last week courtesy of my Fileplanet account. I played for a couple of hours and then logged out. I haven't bothered logging in again.

The space combat reminds me of the naval battles of PotBS. Your vessel slowly manouvres itself into position and then exchanges broadsides with the enemy. It's not a all what I was expecting from a space combat simulator.I was hoping for something more on the lines of the Jump To Lightspeed expansion for SWG, where vessels could twist and turn to gain advantage. Even though JTL is five years old, it's ten times more fun than this in my opinion.

As for ground combat missions, I've never seen anything like it in any other mmo. There doesn't appear to be any aiming  or skill needed. Just run through a group of enemies and your character will auto attack every enemy in sight and in my case at low level, destroy them with ease.

As I say, I've only played for a couple of hours and maybe I'm missing something here but my first impressions weren't good.

Pointing out the Obvious to the Oblivious since 2006

All I know is I'm having fun but then again I didn't go into the game wanting to hate it. I'm judging the game for what it is and not what it isn't and because of that I'm having a great time.

So funny to see people spend £39.99/£49.99 to pre-order games that fall to £14.99 after a month or £7.50 on specials....

....keep up the funny guys :D

In no particular order.

With respect to your comment about the Borg, perhaps you should pay attention to the storyline, it tells you right off the bat something is wrong with these, that they are not complete and are not able to adapt as quickly. As the story line develops you will learn what is going on with these new Borg.

You are correct the missions are repetitive, but honestly, there really isn’t that much you can do to make space ship combat varied. I do have to point out that difficulty is changing on a patch-by-patch basis and it was toned down somewhat for open beta release.

The first eleven levels are a chore, many would like to see the time to progress through these first levels happen quicker, however, once you are promoted and start flying different ship classes with their varying approaches, things do change for the better combat wise. With some missions providing a serious challenge that necessitates that groups work together making the most of varying strengths.

The loading screens are due to the heavy instancing, it has been widely known for some time this game would be heavily instanced as cryptic want only a single server for all at launch.

Pvp is far more fun than you think, even ground pvp is not bad once TAC officers get stealth, engineer’s turrets and so on.

As for the introduction to the game, it's more than adequate, it’s your problem if you cannot work things out, it really isn’t rocket science, unfortunately, I would personally love greater depth, particularly with respect to exploration and numerous solutions to different missions, but. C’est la vie, it is what it is.

They were never going to please everyone with such a strong IP.

My Colour Is Vomit green, I puke on the tards with stupid colour sigs. My symbol is ,,!, O ,!,, My enemies are any prat with a colour sig, a meaningless personality test, or a pointless list of games and classes.

To the OP,

All people cannot/will not like all games. Simple.

When thinking about buying an MMO note that they are meant to be played for years not months, so do a little research before buying, research into the game and what it entails as well as where to buy it and the price.

And i am sure now that everyone and their dog knows that buying an MMO on launch day or before will get you an unpolished content lacking, bug ridden game, it is not right but that is the norm.

FYI Game.co.uk are offering the game for £29.99 and Amazon for £24.99 which is half the prioce you bought it from Steam!!

Since you use the internet make friends with a site called Google and you won't end up as dissappointed as you seem to be now.

Hmm... all the complaints in this post indicate to me (a starfleet command fan) that the game plays exactly like a star trek game should play.

Err... go back to Modern Warfare 2 and leave the trek to the trekies? :P

Steam will give you a refund before the game is actually released as you bought a preorder.  Just email steam and they should refund you (they refunded my AION purchase before the game was officially released)

Remove quests, bosses and trigger them back in is called Dynamic events now?lol..i think not.

I can feel the OP's pain, but you know who to blame?Your fellow gamers. How many posts have we read over the last few years where all players care about is end game PVP?They do not care about the game or it's content, they have on many occasions applauded instances,so yes blame them, they have no clue what real gaming should be about. These same players USUALLY like things in easy mode as well, they would be happy feeling they accomplished a mission with nothing to fight.Your just pressing a few keyboard keys and looking at pixels on a screen, your brain does not need much fueling to muster that accomplishment.

I have not got a key to try it yet,i should be getting one today, hilarious that sites like ZAM ask for a PREMIUM account to get a frigging beta key lol, sad.I am going into trek expecting very little,it may turn out worse than i thought, judging from the what i have been hearing.I will say this much,i am not a hyper 15 year old,i could not care less about speedy combat,i would much rather applaud slow combat if it done well,i will find out soon enough, since my EQ2 servers went down for patching lol.

As mentioned, Steam will give you a full refund if you request it before the release date, it's on their refund policy.

So don't worry, even though it's understandable a purchase based simply on the fact it's Star Trek if the gameplay is not worth it people simply won't accept purchasing it.

I was looking forward to a Star Trek MMO (for some years now), but I am afraid that some reviews aren't up to my demand. Especially since I was in Champions Online beta, and it sounds to be very simular. Either I will try the Open Beta (if I get a key) or wait for a trial.

I got a free key yesterday from one of the many places you could get them.  Installed it, tried it, hated it and removed it already.  The game is crap right now and the OP pretty much hit the problems on the head.  Combat is clunky, graphics are crap(looks like a modded CO), the stories and tutorial make no sense...all crap.

I think the only thing I like about the game is the faces are nice looking. However all the characters share the same body models and just have different faces, it looks so stupid lol. The whole game feels like you're playing Guild Wars or Diablo or Phantasy Star Online. It just feels like you're meeting in these hubs to get groups and then go off into instances to do missions. You never feel like you're with lots of other people and even if you are it is hard to tell between NPC and Players.

The space combat controls are weird like the ship controls make no sense to why they did it that way, feels cumbersome and really slow and clunky. I'm not sure if I missed anything but you have to keep clicking on the same attacks over and over and you only have 3 to choose from. I haven't seen any down point to not firing all your weapons all the time. Why not just have auto attack like EVE so I don't have to keep clicking Fire All?

Anyways wheres the Star Trek Combat on the bridge? That's what I see from all the movies and where all the action takes place, so why isn't the combat based in there? People keep saying you couldn't do it but yes you could, saying you can't do anything gives you this mess or a WoW clone and no innovation.

I have no idea why you'd want to play this game over EVE Online, that offers a more complex and in depth space game that Star Trek fans would want.

The ground game feels like an afterthought and if you've played WoW then you really iwll hate this game because WoW got combat so right and this game just gets it so wrong. If you've only played Everquest or something then it's probably a step up but  theres no reason to play this game over better MMOS out there.

The most annoying thing though has to be the loading screens.  In any station all you see is glowing doors that take you to NPCs that give you quests and other people are in there so I really don't get why they couldn't make it all seamless. Instead it's loading loading loading loading loading mission loading loading loading loading NPC loading loading loading missions etc etc.
