Well I was half way through exitedly creating my first charachter and then ..... " disconnected " all I can do is lol at this I'm afraid .

Yup, same here.

I imagine that with the OB just starting, lots of people are piling in and the login/character creation server is getting spammed.

I didn't realise that there were so many character customization options; should have gone with a default race and left the "make your own race!" tinkering alone. I just know that I'll be spending ages making weirdos with that thing.

It's Cryptic.  It was the exact same with Champions Online.  OB was a nightmare.

Because this isn't a launch, it's the first day of Open Beta... there is a major difference. Just be patient though. There are thousands of people all trying to log in and create characters at the same time right now and the servers are swamped. I've been in many Betas both closed and open and I can tell you that I fully expected this to happen. I was surprised when I actually made it to the character creation screen to be perfectly honest. Most games within the first hour of open beta you don't even get that far.

 thing is it's 2010, not 1999. MMO's are nothing new, server loads are nothing new, all of this should have been simulated, tested and previous experiences and knowledge in place. Why do MMO's still launch as if they are entering uncharted waters?

You don't seem to understand that the server load on the first day of an Open Beta for a popular game are overloaded to point that no server could handle the load. Right now the login and character creation servers are loaded to such an extent that it would choke any game's servers. Just be patient while the tide ebbs and recedes.

This happened during closed beta as well.   I would tend to think they did not learn from it.  However, that is a knee jerk reaction to the frustration of it.  More than likely what they thought was a fix probably did not work either.

Thats the thing mate. This isn't a "LAUNCH" its open beta :) Maybe by the time my client via torrent has finished downloading I wont get these problems. Looking forward to try it out. 32hours to go at 65kb :(

you know, I've always wondered that myself. Yet most games seem to go through these issues. Perhaps there is a certain amount of "tuning" that needs to be done. Perhaps someone in the industry could make a comment?

Very simple. It is simply just too expensive to buy enough servers/bandwidth to serve the initial rush when BO opens. Traffic/server load will start to distribute more evenly over time when players are logging on at different times.

If they buy enough servers to for this initial rush, most of the money will be wasted when the traffic pattern settles down to something more reasonable.

Many failed attempts to login.  Finally got in.  Created character.  Began completing tasks.  Lots of lag.  Got disconnected.  Many more attempts to login.  Got in 2nd time.  Didn't last 3 minutes before getting disconnected again.  Trying to login again. Continues to fail.

I don't mind the login problems, but I hope the game lag improves.

This happened with CO both closed open and launch.  Its happened with STO's closed and now open..they never seem prepared for anything when it comes to the amount of folks logging on.

What is one of the MMO players biggest complains? That companies release games before they are ready, while the games are still bug infested, instable and whatnot. Then you play the beta of an MMO where even the company says "not ready yet", and then you complain about it beeing buggy? oO

  Yup. No server really has ever been able to handle switching from nominal load to full load right off the bat. Its not uncharted water persay but each crew which makes games have to get over the same learning curves over and over because each game has unique issues. *Shrugs* Such is life.

Someone in the industry? Not if they want to keep working in the industry.

I think if someone in the industry wrote a tell-all book about the business, it would shock and horrify most players.

The less people see in the beta, the fewer faults they will find and tell others about. Restricted access, downtime, official forum censorship all have their uses.

I'm sure at this point one of Cryptics poor server infrastructure guys is pointing to a memo they wrote telling the Producer that complains that Ops was given half the budget and half the time neccesary to insure a smooth transition from closed to open beta. There ARE companies that do smooth OB launches and smooth release launches.... but it takes budget, time and lots of planning to pull off.... and many times producers are too cheap to pony up what it actualy takes..... if they even bother to pay attention to thier engineers in the first place.

With the production schedule Cryptic decided to allocate for this project.... these kind of melt-downs are pretty predictable. Most of the time you can't really blame the tech guys for these sorts of fiasco's..... They usualy know it's going to happen.... it's just the suits often don't care to listen...or care to allow the engineers to do what is neccesary to prevent the problem.
