Originally posted by Wizardry Your absolutely right, fan boys should want a good quality game not just anything they throw out the door, NCSOFT screwed up AION so bad!! I have a friend who played Aion and he said it was the worst 30 month sub he payed for. The developers for NCSOFT are cheap and terrible. |

Maybe you should rant in the Aion forum. They are using the Asura gates for "map" travel. I haven't read anything about mounts. If there aren't mounts for faster traveling I'm sure they will make sure that traveling is easy and painless like in the first game, I'm not worried. |

The only announced transportation besides using your feet are the Asuran Gates. I guess they will only be connected between major cities. If this is right and they don't have any other magical fast means of transportation, then I bet there will be mounts. |

I find this topic to be a bit premature. Most importantly, we don't know what the game will be like. That being said, the entire subject of debate now becomes similar to the old jumping topic from GW1. Jumping wouldn't have added much to the game, simply because of the nature of the game. Whether you agree or not, this is what A-Net decided and they stuck with it. (Hats off to sticking to their guns on this one, by the way.) With that in mind, now consider mounts from the developer's perspective and the player's perspective. We already know some things about the game, such as the persistent world, Asura gates, water travel, and event system. These, among all the other mechanics in the game, have to be considered. How will mounts impact this? We don't know, because we haven't played the game. We don't know what it's like. We simply can't make a call on it. Now lets take this to personal preference. As a player, do you like mounts? In most games I play, I find mounts to be finicky. Certain games take certain approaches to mounts. Do the mounts disappear entirely when you dismount? Do they become an item that you can use to summon them and send them away? If not, are there stables? And with this, Player Owned Houses? Do mounts even help me get from place to place without getting in the way of combat? Can I do combat on a mount? Do my skills act different on a mount? Do they work at all? Do I have to be a certain level to use one? Can a player really say whether they want a mount in this game without knowing any of the above? Not really. A player may think they want one, but that's just because they like the idea of a mount period. Basically, it's a silly topic to discuss.
I personally have a lot of faith in A-Net. They get a lot of crap, being an adopted child of NCSoft, but you also gotta remember that they work quite independently and have since the beginning of Guild Wars. Trust in the developers. They know what's best. For now, don't worry about it. If it really matters that much to you, focus on getting in on the beta testing so your voice can be heard before launch.
All that aside, if there are mounts at all, I want a Grawl Mount. =D! |

I do like mounts in some games. But in other games I hate the way they are implemented. LOTRO and WOW for example ,where mounts are used as carrot on a stick. The world is clearly designed with the use of mounts in mind, but they wont let you buy one untill later lvl. This seriously bugs me. Not to mention the costs for riding skill and mount itself. SWG (vehicles) and Vanguard did it better imo. You get the mounts cheaper and on earlier level. Basically at the moment you would want them. Of course you have to pay for improvements or even grind for later on mounts. But at least the devs of those games acknowledge that mounts/vehicles are among the mandatory things in that game (alongside skills and recipes).

I love the way SWG did mounts because it felt so natural. You go out into the wild and you tame your animal, train it, name it, etc, and then buy a saddle from a player-ran store and set it up. Your mount follows you and obeys orders, and if you wish you can saddle up on it, and you can (god forbid) fire your weapon while on the mount. When you get off the mount, it is still there, it doesnt disappear into your pocket. That just feels so natural- It reminds me of Epona from Zelda OoT. If GW2 has a half-assed mount system like most linear mmorpgs have gone with then I don't need it. I was under the impression that Arenanet has already said they will be using a Travel system similar to GW1 to instantly get where you need to go quickly anyways, so it doesnt sound like mounts will be that needed. Although personally I don't love the travel system, it is OK... Better than mounts or flying on flightpaths like EQ2 and WoW. I personally liked SWG shuttles because you waited for the shuttle and other players would also be waiting so you can chat/play with random people while waiting for the shuttle- That is the sort of fun social downtime you don't see in current mmorpgs I think- Plus it was always a rush to see the shuttle fly in and hurry as fast as you can to get on before you miss it, and it was such a treat to get to the shuttleport and see that there was no wait time. Maybe not on release, but I wouldn't be too surprised if they released in a patch. The world probably be just as massive as the last game, if not bigger, but since it's persistent they might have to do away with traveling via quick map travel. Kinda crossing my fingers for teleportation :). They might have to add mounts, but I wouldn't hold your breath. As for flying mounts like dragons, they specifically said players would not be able to fly. I'm kinda happy about that. Flying mounts kinda of ruined WoW's world PvP. But then again, there's no doubt that this game will have some form of expansion packs. There's still two other continents and likely some undiscovered continents as well. This statement is false. |

"More content and just for fun" is hippie-talk. I wouldn't waste manhours by indulging hippies. It is not good enough reason. Even ES4:Oblivion had mounts. They were a money-sink just like the player houses were. Served no other purpose. One game that has horses and properly uses them within the game is Mount&Blade which has an excellent combat system for a small indie game. You may chooce: Use time by making mounts just for fun OR fixing bugs and creating actual content.
Why would GW2 have Portals if you could just Instant Travel like in GW1? Think about it for a sec |

In a way, I am disappointed that there would be a need for mounts. I like map travel and the instanced world of Guild Wars. It is very quick and easy to get anywhere I need to go. In another way, I am excited to be able to have a mount, but I would ranther have a pack mule. Alas, there will be no flying or flying mounts in Guild Wars 2, which is a bummer. I figure mounts will be horses or something along that line. I have not seen any screen shots of mounts, has anyone see one yet? |

i think mounts shouldnt be required but an option one of the main things i hate about gw1 is the fact that i have to get from one place to another before i can map travel ideally it woulda been nice to have something besides a skill that allows you to run quicker when i want to get to point a to b it would be nice to have some form of quicker movement i think it would also remove the need for people to get runs as it stands now you have ppl charging insane amounts to run ppl to multiple places and in reality that detracts from the actual game some form of faster movement would eliminate the need to be "ran" anywhere as you would have something that would help you get past mobs faster though as i stated before it should be an option made available to those who want it and not required ( and not from the nc store either i dont want to pay real cash for an in game item ) |
