It seems most people agree that COH/COV are generally better than CO.

Out of the two options, and having played both, I voted CoH/CoV

No competition.  CoH/CoV is a perfect game to come back to once in a while, or perfect for someone who enjoys super powers and casual (very casual) play.  I could never have it as a primary game since it's gets a "tad" repetitive, but one that certainly holds a special place for me.

Yeah honestly its hard to choose between the two. Both have major flaws. I dont think I'd sub to either

edit: went ahead and voted for CoH/V since I did play it bout a year. Champions I maxed out at 1 month subscription after free month expired so far. Tough choice cause I'd never return to CoH in its current state (broken pvp)

It will be interesting to see when the new CoH expantion is out.  Its looking pretty cool, especially with the graphics update.

What other game is out like it?   Not neccessarily super hero stuff but with the action, weapons and powers that blast mobs to oblivion?  Any mmo without a midevil, fantasy or backwards weak assed weapons, magic or scorcery theme to it.  I really am hoping APB is the answer.  The adventuring hook doesn't do it.  Yea I'm really adventuring around my computer program, look at the mountains and streams.  Last night hiked all the way up to dingnutselz castle played whack a mole on a goblin.   Instead Steal a car, better yet a tank and smash everything on the way.  Arrive with your shoulder mounted rockets, blow the joint to bits laughing while the law chase you through a modern day city, a game that makes sense.  Carmegeddon vs GTA mmo.  I am just hoping APB is all that with Duke Nukems sense of humor.

CO and COH/V doesn't have the vehicles granted but the powers the characters can generate in CO gets impressive, you can travel pretty fast in every zone too.  I did play coh since beta cov when it released, took a few years off checking out every thing in between.  Came back to coh/v to realize it is a great game, and now CO.  But I would welcome any mmo that incorperates modern day or later technology, powers and even sorcery and magic if it did damage similar to that of CO, not to mention the countless powers, levels of powers, advantages of powers, stating the powers/abilities.  CO does challenge you to think and plan your own unique build if you want.  The combinations of variables are countless unlike others where you chose a class and get what you are givin every level.

CO does have its faults no doubt.  I would be playing it now but the server is down.  Time to re-up my script since Aion bores me to death.  Aion is a great game but did the beta continuesly so grinding though another character is not entertainment to me.  If it were less of a fairyland setting with dynomite effects it might be another story.

So please suggest a game providing excitement, violence, damage and the amount of it driven by the freedom to choose and build your own character using an excess of combinations designed in a way that forces you to "Think".     Hey!  where's the spell check?

As a COX vet I waited until recently to try CO since I saw it for $30, and I'm hooked right now.  Very addicting gameplay imho

Dependsonwhat you re looking for. The highpoint f CO for me is the char customisation and especially the different travel powers. COV / COh has by far the better and varied content which is CO's big downfall for longevity

I like CO combat style better, blocking and energy management is more interesting, character customization is better and most missions are not instanced.

IMHO, the main advantage of CoX is content, especially in end-game and the mission scalability.

I chose CO mainly for its potential, CoX is a great game but after many years the engine will get shorter and shorter, so new features will be difficult or impossible to implement.

I like both game, I wish I could afford both of them.

I love CoX. (yes i said it) I tried CO and it was okay. Maybe would have played beyond trial if not for its competition (fallen earth). I played with CoX for years and am still subbed, though i consider unsubbng until the expansion comes out but that is mainly due to low population.

That would make sense.  In terms of gameplay, there's not much that CO has that CoX doesn't.  In terms of content, CO isn't even in the same league as CoX.

Not to say that CoX has good content, it just has alot of it.  And CO's content(what little there is) isn't much better, if at all.

It's kinda like comparing an old Ford Taurus to a newer Ford Fiesta with a non-functional hood scoop.

When CoX gives free weekends, I usually play for a few hours and usually enjoy it.  Not enough to sub, but I enjoy it.

CO is a frustrating mess.  I couldn't even bring myself to log in on the last free weekend.  When you can't get a superhero geek like me to log on to your superhero game for free, you've got trouble.  Even SWG can sucker me into playing for a couple hours for free, on occasion.

My preference to CoX, it has more replayability, deeper building, and great team dynamics.

CO is a very fun game, but I dont think I will play it on a very long term. I'm still not sure. It's mostly a solo game, where everyone sadly ends up playing the same kind of self sufficient hero. When you've leveled one, you may have tested most of the powers in the powerhouse, and it does not make you want to necessarily level more. Also CO badly lacks any team dynamics in my opinion, that is sad for a MMO. On the other hand, despite being almost impossible to balance, CO's PvP is much better than CoX PvP.

I have played both and now that I have played the faster paced combat and gameplay of CO I don't think I could go back and enjoy COH/COV.

I would go with CO now. There is plenty to do in the game at this time with more being added.

Before I played CO, I would have said CoX (which I was addicted to for 3 years and love to bits), but now that I've settled in with CO a bit, I think that IF they manage to get ease of PUG-ing to the level it was in CoX, if they manage to sort it out so that teaming has more of a purpose and is more frequent, then CO will be better than CoX - but only marginally, mainly in terms of the pace of combat.  CoX had unusually fast-paced combat for an MMO (I've tried them all, and it definitely is the fastest, although that may not be apparent to anyone who didn't get beyond about level 20), but CO's is REALLY fast.

Toon building is also a bit better - it's a bit more intricate and satisfying than CoX's,  i.e., the main "draw" of the superhero MMO (as has been established by Cryptic's style), which is thinking up superhero concepts and implementing them, is better fulfilled in CO because of the classless system.

But I do worry: my feeling is that Cryptic were spot on with the combat, but they went a bit too far in the "open world" style of gameplay (i.e. kill stealing style :) ) of other MMOs.

What I mean to say is, unless you have tons of resources to put into tons of high-end content, the only possible counterbalance to that, as CoX showed, is to make the game attractive to casual players by making PUG-ing easy, thereby fulfilling the social function of an MMO without the necessity for people to join SGs to get a social gameplay experience.  The trouble with most MMOs from the casual's point of view is that they seem to have in mind the equation "casual=solo".  CoX proved by its 5 year longevity that that is not the case.  It seems Cryptic forgot this lesson in designing CO, and they're in danger of falling between two stools: it's neither WoW-ish enough to play that game properly (because it doesn't have enough high-end content), nor is it CoX-ish enough to play that game properly (because PUG-ing is atm awkward and a bit pointless).

I think they should just put in loads of generic scaled team missions like CoX (e.g. get them from citizens).  The only real problem with CoX's missions wasn't so much lack of tileset variety, as lack of MAP LAYOUT variety.  What eventually got boring wasn't that it was the umpteenth office, it was that it was the umpteenth office of the same layout that you knew like the back of your hand.  If they could crack that problem with CO, they'd be on to a winner.

CO is a good game with alot of potential.  Its real draw is the diversity of powers you can put together.  But thats about where the benefits stop for me.  It has too many other bigger problems wich is why I let my sub run out.

One of the major problems for me was the end game content.   The content is there, but the rewards (drops/gear) are lacking.   The nice high end Purple stuff you can craft, pick up, or gain as rewards are only slightly better than the Blues and in some cases even considered worse.   Wich makes putting in the time and effort to get the high end gear is not really worth it when the blues you have are just as good as the Purples.   It makes doing the end game content boring and not worth the effort.   All stick and no carrot.

PvP is pretty bad.  I dont PvP, but I hear that the matches are dominated by FoTM builds.   People trying to play concept characters like Spider-Man, Bat-Man, or any other get decimated by those people only using a mosh posh of only the most over powerd powers.

One of the other problems is the lack of content it takes to get from level 1 to level 40.   The day the game launched, Cryptic nerfed xp rewards for completeing missions.  Wich meant suddenly you had to complete almost ALL of the missions in the entire game to get to level 40.  I'd say about 70% to 80% of all the missions in the game.  If you missed missions or skipped anything, you would hit a leveling gap at around level 28.    Wich alot of people did, and were searching everywhere for missions they may have missed.   Its a little better now since Cryptic added in some new repeatable missions, but you still have to complete the majority of the missions in the entire game or you wont hit level 40.

One of the other problems with leveling content is that since you already have to complete the majority of the missions to get to level 40, if you roll an alt to level up, you have to do all the exact same missions.   There is no leveling diversity. No different starting areas.  No different leveling paths.  All the exact same missions in pretty much the exact same order.  Rolling alts is like playing a single player game over and over.

There is plenty more I could say, but for now I'll just finish by saying that the game is good and probably worth it if you are just looking for a filler game untill something else comes out, or just need a break from your current MMO.   But if youre looking for a long term diverse game with lots of end game content/rewards, you wont find it in CO.   Atleast not yet.   Maybe in 6 months.

CoH is still easily the better game and subscription numbers speak to that.

CO still has a lot of unrealised potential - but that doesn't mean much to players who want to play the game now.

But even when that potential is realised, CoH's core game mechanics are significantly better in a few respects than CO's (and vice versa) so at best I think CO could hope to match CoH.

CO will sadly never even match CoH. The problem with CO is the foundation. Champions Online had some nice combat and customization. Beyond that the games a joke. The foundation is the problem and in order to even compete they would need an NGE or a relaunch after a complete overhaul of the entire game.

And I'm not even sure it could compete then if they used the same engine. One of the devs posted the reason that some of the archery powers and such are bugged and have to be done a certain way is that there engine can't handle on hit effects. Then theres the whole networking issue's that have plauged them from the beggining. I am use to MMO's causing some people connection problems and such but it's usually a small percentage of the community hit and it's generally for various issues that eventually get fixed. In CO thats not the case, a rather large portion of the community was plauged by connection issue's and it seemed to shift from week to week who would experience the connection issues. I was hit one week and fine the next. Many never had these connection issue's but the problem is just as many had experienced them.

Then there account setup seems to have some major issue's. It randomly decided that some people weren't allowed to play anymore and that took a fair amount of time to fix and they had to pretty much do it by individual. Some still have the issue.

While I never enjoyed CoH as the pace of the game was to slow for me and I hate the inverted mouse thing unless it's a flight sim, I have to give it credit for having a solid foundation and being a decently done MMO. It may have not been the best in the begining but it really has come a long way. I tried the free trial again recently and it still isn't my cup of tea but I don't see CO ever catching up to CoH. Especially with Going Rouge on the way or out by now.
