Well you guys finally talked me into it and now I'm the latest newbie in the patching process as I type this. I also plunged into the 6 month deal as well. I didn't think I was going to be able to get the game already but I got payed early from a client so I get Christmas a little early. See you guys in game!

Welcome aboard! I'm glad to see so many people giving DF a shot. #1 rule is to bank often. Move around from one goblin camp to another. Don't let your first PKer get you down. Ask questions in chat. Join a clan, possible the NEW clan since you're starting out.

Yeah this is the first game that I've payed for that I haven't really felt like the good part was right around the corner, you know?  This is a game that is actually CONSISTENTLY FUN.   

I've been interested in DF for a while now, what makes many of you love it so much? Saying you'd pay $30/month for this is pretty bold. From the video's I've seen, this game doesn't look that great..I mean, visually it would 8-10 years ago. Besides that, the combat looks clunky and so does the movement. Can any players elaborate on this?

The graphics look playstaion 2 quality, characters feel like they glide when they walk or run. NPCs and players turn on a dime (i'm not sure about boats or warhulks) and it is possible to climb steep angled objects with no lose of momentum. In fact, there isn't any momentum. I honestly really find it annoying, because I suck at FPS games as it is, and its really difficult to predict movement when someone can make a 169 degree turn as easily as continuing to move forward.

Great news guys, if you noticed my above thread that was when the patch was at about 5 percent, 7 hours later give or take I will be inside the game around 2 am in the morning, its at 95 percent and counting woot ;)

I think what's got e loving it so much  is the risk vs reward gameplay.  Every time you go out into the field you are risking everything.  Well, everything you have on you at least.  

Example:  Playing earlier today I was outside one of the starter towns and got PK'd by a player of a rival race.  Lost about 100 gold, some armor, and a couple weps.  Went back to see if I could grab my corpse but he was still there..  I lucked out, though and he was distracted by some goblins.  I had enough time to grab my bow off my corpse, load some arrows, and shoot him in the back when he wasn't even looking.  I finished off the goblins while I let his character bleed out, (you have the option of killing them as soon as they hit the ground, helping them back up, or just letting them bleed to death which takes about a minute) and then looted EVERYTHING off his corpse.  Bloody revenge!   I wound up with over 300 gold and better weps than I had originally.  

It's just scenarios like these that you don't really get in many other games.  (well maybe EVE, but...  uh....  yeah... I'm not big on staring at empty space for hours)  Plus, the FPS style combat just gives you one of those "BOOM! HEADSHOT!" moments when you score a kill on someone.  

Also, the graphics are not nearly as bad as some folks here seem to think.  I'd honestly say that at max settings (how I'm playing it, but of course it looks worse when you turn them down) it's about on par with WAR graphics wise, if not a bit better.

 i wont lie, df graphics are some ugly shit, but so are wow war ect, theyre all the ugly bitch daughters compared to age of conans hot megan foxness.  that being said i quit aoc and all those other games besides df because they were boring, and killing people in them was monotonous because there were no reprecussions.  df has reprecussions, and concequences!
