Hey all, I've run the gamut on MMO's... I've played: UO, EQ 1 & 2, DAOC, WoW, Vanguard, Guildwars, LotRO, Eve... I think thats it. Most of them quite extensively. Anyway, I'm currently playing Eve (have for over 3 years), and love the concept - no leveling, huge world, open pvp, large player alliances, etc. I'm curious if there is something similar, but is fantasy based. I realize that is asking alot... lol. And if not, as I suspect, is there something similar to Ultima Online, but modern, with a good RP community? Also, how is Vanguard these days? I thought they did have a few things going for it, right when it was released, with some interesting ideas (equipment expertise, for example). I tried playing it again a year after release, and found the RP server gone, a lot of interesting features gone, and the world shrunken by teleporters :-/. So... any good suggestions for a veteran MMO RPer? |

I'd suggest FFXI, just cause its an awsome RP game with great story and community, the leveing is completely grouped and grinding is a biiiiiitch. But i got to endgame and it was very FUN and felt rewarding. It's an extremely endulgent game so if you can get into it its a great game for you |

Yeah, Eve is this way as well. They seem to be a little similar. Does Darkfall have a trial of some kind? I couldn't find one on their site. |

Mmm... tried mabinogi? It's free, and it's skill based; the community is good and the RP, well... it's decent I'm having fun there, and trying doesn't cost anyhting... |

Though I have yet to play it myself, I've heard nothing but good things about Darkfall, you might want to look into it. |

Maybe if I'm going to have my Xfire profile up, I should start using Xfire... |

Darkfall does not have a good RP community from what I've seen. Best RP community I've ever seen would be Underlight. Another good RP community with skill-based gameplay and no leveling, per say, is Face of Mankind. However, it's not fantasy.

To tell you the truth, i really never saw any roleplaying at all going on. Most of the community acted like jerks and it was worse then darkfall in the ganking and community department. I think you might be confusing people in led arresting others as roleplaying but well that's what the main role is for them. As for darkfall, i would say its so-so and my personal suggestion would be go with ryzom, beautiful world and filled with rp-ing things. |

It has a leveling system but only to gain attribute points really. Other than that, it doesn't mean much. |

Um... FFXIV? Anyone... really? I mean.. community isn't established yet of course, but the latter fit it's projected bill. "There is only one thing of which I am certain, and that's nothing is certain." |

I know it's not Fantasy, but my short experience in FE showed a lot more RP presence than I've seen in other games. I'm not into it, just saying I seen a lot more interest there. AoC would prolly be next, as it has RP servers for both PvE and PvP, but it's levelbased - though combat takes a bit more skill than most MMOs of the same vein (especially as melee). Strangely enough, I don't remember any of em in FFXI, and you'd figure that'd be a trove of RP. Writer / Musician / Game Designer Now Playing: Skyrim, Wurm Online, Tropico 4 |

The only worthwhile skill-based fantasy games with strong role-playing communities are text MUDs.
Final Fantasy XI is level-based, not skill-based, and you'd have to dig mighty deep to find any role-playing. It really only fits the "fantasy" bill. Darkfall is fantasy themed and skill-based, but the idea of "role-playing" in that community is utterly absurd. EVE Online you already know about. Mabinogi... well, I can't speak from experience, but I highly doubt it's anything worth looking into. Fallen Earth isn't fantasy; I suppose it might have a decent role-playing community, though I suspect you'll have to look hard to find one.
Basically, if any of the graphical MMOs people mention in this thread do by some miracle have all three qualities you're looking for, they'll probably fall dramatically short in one or more other areas... like population (no one playing), poor overall quality, and so on and so forth.
It's much easier to find the things you want in text MUDs, most especially the role-playing (your average MUD has 10x more of it than your average graphical MMORPG), but unfortunately MUDs are a dying breed.

These days the best role play hands down is found on Moon Guard and Wrymrest Accord servers. Once you get past the tutorial levels 1-79, you don't level in WoW If a structured game don't float your boat, Second Life has many role play communities. Second Life is also free to play.
