I remember reading a news post on this site discussing something about how MMOs never try to be different from traditional views. But what other catagory could a MMO fit in that wasnt already done? |

Some of these have already been done, but here are some other possibilities besides fantasy, sci-fi and real world:
historical alternate history supernatural - traditional supernatural - world of H. P. Lovecraft sports romantic/sexual economic political competing musicians/bands designing, building and programming robots that battle each other weird wild west (non-historical) pirates (non-historical) furries (anthropomorphic talking animals) weird gangsters (non-historical) UFOs (players could be aliens, private investigators, govt agents, etc.) conspiracies (like the Illuminati card game) post-apocalyptic religious superheroes teenage superheroes mutants psychics magic in a high tech world
I could keep going, but there's some ideas for you. Not all of them are good ideas, but some are. |

a good AAA open world wild west mmo could be awesome. World of Warcraft is a proof that MMORPG quality should affect schedule/budget and not the other way around. |

Steampunk! We need more games like that I only know of neosteam which is not bad but not that great (Character moving animation is a bit ugly) but I love the look of the map with gears and such even on some weapons :D |

Anything you can imagine (look up a list of book/film genres) could be the setting. The reason scifi/fantasy are frequently used in games is they provide excuses ("magic" or "science") for empowering players with strongly-defined abilities, to make combat interesting. Otherwise it's just pure damage, which isn't very interesting at all. There's a lot of other considerations too, like how mythology and aliens tend to result in better monster variety than in a game like a Western MMO where you have what...indians and outlaws and uh...um...or a Zombie MMO where you have..uh...zombies. Superheroes as a setting shares the same advantages. None of these are absolute arguments against things like a Zombie MMO, but they're the underlying reasons that making a Zombie MMO is a little harder, so it takes a little more effort to achieve the same fun factor. (and for what it's worth, Zombie MMOs have a huge advantage in terms of Customer AI Expectations. People don't expect zombies to be smart; when zombies in games do something stupid like run up against a wall, research has shown that people just don't mind as much as when it's a gun-toting soldier.) |

Slasher / splatter / horror genre. You could either play people hunting down the lunatics, or play a lunatic yourself. A bit if a creepy idea? Sure. But there are a lot of horror fans out there.

I would have to say a good Western. Deadlands or even some amalgamation of Red Dead or Call of Juarez. |

I agree with you that old-fashioned zombies are better, but even George's zombies are faster than they used to be. id make the zombies random, i.e. freshly dead and there sprinters, old and decrepid and they lumber after you... so if your questing and you spot a few, you'll not know whether or not they'll be the lumbering type who you can take out from a distance or sprinters who once they spot you will come at you hell for leather |

I wonder how a faction based game where you could play a human or a zombie would work out.

My thoughts exactly. I think it would make for an awesome MMOG. Instead of a raid you'd have a train robbery. Duels would be a core game mechanic rather than a tacked on feature for PvP-EPEEN. Indians could be the generic bad guy faction or maybe even a playable race. Land ownership, mines, and oil wells could be the backbone of the game's economy.

Some kind of HAPPY TREE FRIENDS ONLINE with colorfull kiddy cartoons theme mixed with sadistic gory violent world. I would like to revisit everyone's favorite cartoons in an action based, hack and slash RPG with twisted personality and humour.
Some kind of 4CHAN meets THE SCENE, in an online meets reality world. This is hard to elaborate in words.
Some kind of PRISON ONLINE, Working as public defender having my share of experience within the penal system I found it second nature to compare MMORPGs to jails, each with its own set of rules, society/behaviour models/patterns and lack of freedom. It could even have a "free" world akin to a GTA Online, but with the focus on the prison. You go outside, you commit crimes, get caught, sentenced, sent to jail = and this is where the real game begins. People can work towards certain goals, being released, escaping, parole, or living inside the jail, working on it, smuggling/trafficing, etc... you know the drill.

Beyond Retard, way way beyond. When it goes so extreme that actually becomes the opposite of what it was due to the intensity...
