You can just sub to the game from a free trial and you get everything for free except Trial of Obi-Wan.

But who would want to sub to this game. haha.

Wooot ! this is great having SWG so cheap on Steam , lets hope it brings in some more players, this game deserves a second chance imo . :)

The vast majority of sales will be to the current players who want the latest promotional 'shiny' (Grievous Wheel Bike), but I am sure $OE knows that. The upside is that players know what they are getting when they fork over their money, unlike the TCG loot lottery.

I might pay 10 bucks to play a month.. i pay that for lotro, and getting all the boxes is worth it.. even if it entertains me for 5 hours, that's about the same as going to a movie..

Just need a little change from elves and dwarfs

This!

STEAM just made SoE realize what a total waste of good quality loot the TCG is. Rather than 20 new "things", they just have to offer ONE via STEAM. Brilliant :) Rather than giving away all the good loots to those pesky subscribers, they'll HAVE to buy it to get it now.

Gotta hand it to them though, it is a clever way to milk subscribers for more cash.

And they get to make claims of increasing subscriptions.

Personally I just see these promotions and stop playing the game that does it. I'm a completionist and want to earn everything via playing the game and as soon as I can't then I see no point in playing.

Slightly off topic, but you're not alone. Between TCG and *No Trade*, they have lost a valuable subscriber type...the "collector". While never the "pillar" of the community that more active players were, the "collector" would come in a few times a year for the "stuff" like Life Day and the Anniversary gifts.

This trend of giving away items if you buy a new copy of the game or an add-on really needs to stop.

I said it back when JTLS was coming out with the Naboo Flash Speeder, why should the only people whom get that be people who did the pre-order and got the Beta? Same with RoTW and ToOW, both should have had new items for the Players to craft, they should not have given away items in order to get people to buy something for the game. Dare I say it's worse then RTM and it's why many MMO Dev's are now looking at RTM.

It's exactly why so many companies do that, if someone has been dedicated to play the game this long they will buy every new copy of the game that comes out to get special items. It's just monitizing your existing player base, plus then they get to use that sales data if they want to make it sound like a bunch of new players joined up.

The STEAM CoA isn't even a new copy...it's simply a new "code" to activate.

I dare say that this trend is ONLY successful because it's SWG we're talking about. I don't think any other name in gaming could get away with stunts like this. It's the right group of people to milk...players who have been so content deprived that they actually think a new speeder qualifies as an "expansion".

The fault here is that many MMO's are starting to do this when it comes ot an expansion or buying a new copy of the game. SOE just does this more then most, your right where in this is not new content and it is tricking the player base into trying to stay. But this is a trend that SOE has started and I feel we have this along with the card game to thank for more people looking at RTM and thinking that is a good way to go.

Really in my eyes content should be free for the game. Another game to bring up to make my point is Left 4 Dead, one of the best FPS titles of the last few years however Valve decided to then work on Left 4 Dead 2. Really all that content that is in Left 4 Dead 2 should have been placed into Left 4 Dead, no one should have been told "Oh if you want to take a bat to a Zombies head, go get L4D2!"

This all boils down to content, I will give SOE this much and say that they have come out with a few things for SWG that normally we would see in an expansion pack made to milk the players of their money. However ANY content be it items, new levels/maps/planets/quests should be free as long as you the player are a sub.

brilliant isnt it?  taking advantage of the playerbase committment and loyalty to the game!

it would be the work of genious if it weren't for the fact that the world is watching, and whilst they are making an extra buck now the resentful current playerbase (oh they complain alright) and those who take note from afar might think twice about signing up to a SOE game in the future.

after all, wouldn't you expect to be the subject of such practices in whatever future SOE game you play?

There are a number of game companies that are going for the real money transactions - Blizzard and EA to name some of the big ones.   Then there is NCSoft with their costume packages (they are $10) and add nothing but a couple costume peices and perhaps an emote or two.    This isn't an SOE thing and other games ARE getting away with this.   People still seem to give glowing reviews to WoW and they have a sub fee AND a TCG.  Doesnt seem to hurt their playerbase any.  Everywhere I go I see their advertisments of 11 million players have discovered the magic to the point where its getting to be annoying.

So what is WoW's excuse?   If your statement is true I think I can understand and accept a dying game doing that.  But WoW keeps reminding everyone that it has 11 million subscribers.  Which works out to a huge amount of money every month.  Yet they still charge a sub fee and they have a TCG.   Everyone seems to want to just say "ITs that greedy SOE!"  But its definately not  - both Blizzard and EA  have games that have microtransactions.   EA is going to have something to do with the new Star Wars based mmo coming out.   Since they do it already for the Sims I cant imagine them NOT doing it for their new mmo.   Like it or not I think those things are here to stay.   And lets face it - computer gaming as a hobby is not really a cheap one to have.  Games, systems are all expensive.  But if you want them you will have to pay.  Its just the way it is.

I sometimes think that people want to just trash SOE and SWG and will find any reason to do it.   I dont think its fair though to single them out and make them out to be the villains when they are not the only game company out there doing these things and people are more than accepting of it.

And actually its rather troubling to me as a player of SWG.  Because on sites like this people can say anything here and thats their right but - what if their statements arent true or accurate?   WIll the people that read those statements check it out for themselves or just take it at face value and not verify the facts (or lack of them)?     Perhaps in peoples haste to beleive the worst about SWG they wont care if the statement is true or not.  And that is extremely sad.

Why waste money putting the game on steam(it cost a fair amount i beleive unless LA or SOE has some package deal)to just sell it to your own players? Maybe this new GCW they feel is a hit. There was some cockiness(lol) in the initial announcement. The kind of cocky when you "know". Reminded me of a CCP announcement. Maybe they actually think it's worth it as opposed to just selling it. I am interested to see how the new GCW works out, or if pve ruins it, or if it's just better marketing. We'll see.

There were a number of people on the official boards that were asking for SWG to be promoted in more places.  In the last 3 months they have done a couple of things to do that.   I think putting it on Steam was a marketing thing.  And apparently it worked as people did buy it.   People can speculate that it only was old players buying it but thats all it is: speculation and no one apart from SOE knows for sure who bought the copies - if they were old or new players.   Im sure alot of old players did it - but I dont think it would account for all the sales.

I think that SOE will have to work to keep those new subscribers (just like any other game) but I also think that its up to the community too.  Reading about someone wanting to try the game and having someone that was still disgruntled about things that happened 4 years ago with a bias AGAINST the company producing it rather than the game itself will only serve to poison someone that might have enjoyed it.   Ive seen how some vets act towards new players.  Its despicable.
