I would love to go back and play the original Everquest but I just do not feel like I'd be getting my money's worth for resubbing. I think it would do SOE a lot of good to change Everquest into a F2P game. What do you guys think? Would you go back/start if it went free?

I'd go back in a heartbeat if it were free, as it stands it just feels to dated to be worthy of a sub.

There are still good times to be had though, no doubt about it.

I don't think it can, namely because the way it would have to make money is cash-shop, then everyone cries over that... if anything they should drop the price, since I really can't believe games like that, AO and UO still charge what modern games do. I guess you can argue that there is tons more content because of it's age, but really, nobody cares. I think it's a market that exists only to capture those that once played it, and hope to regain them, because as is EQ is not going to tempt new players that never tried it before.

I think that it would certainly bring in new players, but the type of players a F2P deal would probably bring in would most likely hate EQ and the veterans of the community would hate them.

I don't see that happening. EQ has expansions and updates, on a much larger scale than F2P games. It's not that costly to play, if you want to join EQ. I don't think making EQ F2P would benefit either the game or the playerbase though. It's certainly not something the current playerbase wants, the cash-shop in EQ is filled with fluff items and very few items are worth buying, except maybe the xp potions, but one can easily get xp in groups, I don't want to see this become anything else. I like it the way it is =).

Hate is a strong work, but yes, there would be hostility towards a project to make EQ F2P. It's not that expensive to join, I think it's 30$ to try it and it will get you all expansions, same price as a movie + dinner, I don't see the issue heh.

Never try to teach a pig to sing,it wastes your time and annoys the pig.

If EQ went F2P I would never consider it again.  The game is not designed for the type of crowd F2P brings.

I scream and yell when I play a game, just have to remember to take my heart pills first..

They have new players all the time, I resub'd and joined a guild on a whim and 60% are new players, some are pretty young so there are still new people coming in all the time but there are also some old-timers like me in there as well. I have been helping out a lot.

Kind of fun working on 1.5 epics and grinding out levels why helping out the guildies, of course what drove me away was my last guilds daily raids..ugh..but that was my fault for staying.. I only done a couple raids but mainly 1-2groups nothing major like the old days.

You know you are old when the dev's on the games you play are almost young enough to be your grand-kids.

The F2P model is anthema to all that the original EQ stood for.

F2P means the game generates revenue by selling in games items and services. The original EQ was all about earning what you had.

I could see that happening... EQ classic as F2P... then extra content would require upgrades, subs, or cash shop to unlock content.

I'd play just to see if they still haven't fixed the goddamned bug where if you get drunk inside the boat you sway outside of it and get dumped into the OOT. Ah... good times.

F2P means the game generates revenue by selling in games items and services. The original EQ was all about earning what you had.

With respect, the original EQ was about competing with UO, and AC when a 56k modem was still king, George Lucas decided to make the "Force" a parasitic infection and introduce the most awesome character to date, "Jar Jar Binks", in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, and Britney Spears, Ricky Martin, N'Sync and Backstreet Boys were vomiting tearing up the charts and airwaves and killed what little remained of MTV as it became TRL.

People who endured these times flocked to those early MMO's in droves to find common friends. But I compare the times of that era to the Bubonic Plague and those of us who endured those times, Flagellants. Playing a game that required you to put 60+hours a week into it, made you realize you fed your character BETTER than you fed yourself, coupled with the Pavlovian "DING" of audible acknowledgment that you have succeeded in some hard earned form of gratification helped give purpose to those starved for any form of entertainment that didn't involve boy bands, bubblegum pop, constant commercial spam from failed movies or "been there, done that" Doom clone VG's (Medal of Honor, CS, UT, Q3)

Again, with respect... it wasn't so much "earning" what we had as it was "enduring" with what little choices we had at the time.

Neverquest could come out with the most innovative, era-revitalizing idea since the invention of the wheel as far as MMO's are concerned and to be honest I wouldn't know nor care... because those of us who did play and and no longer do, will probably never go back unless they did do something like F2P to give it another chance. If Sony is happy with the revenue of it's current sub base, then it probably won't happen. Either way it's not my loss, just theirs.

A ghost of the path not trodden.

I'd love to play this game, actually, but seeing how it's really top-heavy thee days, and I don't want to play on 50/51 server... Well, I fail to see the point.

I hate WoW because it made my plush hamster kill himself, created twin clones of Hitler, punched Superboy Prime in reality, stared my dog down, spoiled my grandmother, assimilated me into the Borg, then made me into a real boy, just to make me a woman again.

Retro gaming is a niche market that makes money. That explains the EQ and UO charges perfectly. F2P isn't really a necessary solution as long as there are 50K or so players willing to pay for the game they can make money and even develop the odd expansion pack every year or two to keep the game going. What we really need, though, is EQ next to come along and bring that universe to the modern era.

I really don't quite understand why people use these arguments.

You don't think the game is worth paying for so instead they should just turn it to free to appeal to people who don't want to pay for it? huh? Who is this supposed to benefit, you or the game?
