More than three million quests have been created in Star Wars Galaxies this month using the Chronicle Master system, which was released in an update just over a month ago. Even more impressive, in our opinion, is the fact that apparently a single individual is responsible for 6,000 of those quests. Wow!

For more information on Star Wars Galaxies, visit the game's official site here.

Never attribute to stupidity that which can be adequately explained by malice.

Player created quests and missions is a system I've wanted to see fleshed out for a while.  I hope some other games incorporate this.  I think it both requires and helps enhance good worldbuilding.  These sort of things would let players help tell their own story and carve out an RP type of niche.  I think this is a step in the right direction.

Important facts:
1. Free to Play games are poorly made.
2. Casuals are not all idiots, but idiots call themselves casuals.
3. Great solo and group content are not mutually exclusive, but they suffer when one is shoved into the mold of the other.
4. Community is more important than you think.

A system like this is what the game needed pre NGE. This is one of the "tools" that people talk about when talking Sandbox games, provided it as detailed as I think it is. It's one of those tools that let people via game mechanics create their own stories and allow others to participate in them (again, based on what it sounds like it allows and no person exp with it).

3 million created quest, seems like alot, doesnt it?

Think Sony made a mistake here. If someone knows how long it takes to "create" a quest, I think they have given us enough info to peg the number for the maximum subscriber base currently ingame.

If every single person playing did nothing but created quests, depending on the time needed to create a quest, you can peg the max number of possible subs.

They say 1 person created 6k quests? 60 minsX24 hrsX30 days=43200 mins. 43200 mins/6000quests=7.2 mins.

This equates to a maximum of 200 quests per day per person with everyone playing 24 hrs a day for a month. 3M/200=15,000 players....

I.m betting SWG doesnt have more than a few thousand players still playing, sad.

Kinda drunk, atm, so please recheck my math...I may be wrong but not by much.

Think of it this way, 500 playersX 6,000 quests=3M quests...I was wrong, they have even less players then I thought.

Your math doesn't make any sense at all, tbh.  I don't think it's even possible to derive anything from that info...

I see where your going at with the single player making 6,000 quests. An easier way to show that is:

24 hours x 30 days = 720 hours......      6,000 quests / 720 hours = 8.3 quests an hour.

I have to call BS on that amount of quests being created by one person. 8.3 quests an hour every possible hour of the month is stupid to claim by any standard.

Also assigning a generous number of 50,000 players to the game; with 3 million quests being created, that means that all 50,000 of those people were responsible on average for 60 quests for that month. I have to call BS on that again. Even at the peak of the game with 300,000 people that would still mean that everyone did 10 quests in a month.

Well, he might be drunk, but the math is good and his bullshit meter went off properly in spite of his inebriation.

WTF are they trying to prove lying to us? SWG may not have reached a new low but they came close to it.

is it possible that this update was in beta servers for months prior to live servers? And maybe that all the missions made on the beta servers were alowed to go to live servers? (dont know if they even have beta servers by the way)

Maybe those players should get a slice of the pie seeing as they're doing SOE's job now too.

Honestly, the whole player created quest/mission thing is one of those things that seems like a good idea, but in practice is actually utter garbage for a number of reasons. The primary one being, the simplest. Most people don't play fair. If you give people the ability to attach any kind of reward to the things they create, .5% will use it responsibly, while the other 99.5% will create "badge/exp/treasure" rooms that are designed for the quickest completion and highest reward. Don't allow players to attach any kind of rewards, and the system gets ignored by the majority of the player base who only cares about grinding gear and various other things that have been driving the whole genre into the ground.

There's no real way to control this when the whole point is giving control to the player, so ultimately, there is no way to solve this. Honestly I'd rather see efforts put into thinking up other systems besides throwing more instances/quests/gear at games, like a proper exploration system, or just about ANYTHING that would make the game world more dynamic rather than the incredibly static games we have now.

It only takes a few minutes to create 3-4 quests so I'm not surprised that one person (probably with no life at all) may have made 6,000 already.  At the end of the quests you are asked to rate the quest and the person who made it gets points they can spend on rare items like the sandcrawler house.

So a lot of times people just ask you to give them a good rating.  There's potential I suppose to make RP even better, but most people I've seen don't use it that way.  It's just stuff like, go kill 10 of these, go kill 15 of that, etc.  But maybe I've only been playing crappy player quests so far.

The quest system is used by guilds, so you make quests for your friends / guildies. The reward they get is the fun.

I have seen this system used in an RP guild and it was awesome. They created locations for almost every RP event with this system with incredible detail, added and activated effects, enemies, etc as the story unfolded. A workshop for droids, shuttle crash site, suspicious container raided by tuskens, city under siege, temple ruins on endor, imps/rebs attacking the outpost or just a beach party... anything is possible.

This tool (and the whole SWG) is simply the best for RP, no game will ever come even near to the RP support it has. This is the main reason that i always come back for another months all the time.

Maybe they should hire the one with the 6000 quests? Or at least give them free lifetime sub if those quests are any good. :)
