Before MMO's there was nothing.

I would like a to play a new & good Sci-Fi MMO, but this game, judging by the screenshots, looks like a pile of junk. Seriously.

Am I the only one who think this? I am quite sure STO will be a major failure, as I can't imagine this game will appeal to anyone but the die hard fanbois of Star Trek.

Good luck to you all though. You really deserve it...

It won't appeal to most Trek fans, since it only looks like Trek.

Okay. So who will this game be meant for...? Or is it just lack of ambitions that made the GFX looks so terrible?

Looks ok in my opinion. Worried that SW:TOR may be a massive fail, to be honest.

I am looking forward to SW-TOR myself. But after I played Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare, I am quite shocked/surprised what could be gotten out of a proper GFX engine... So, I will prolly expect more from SW-TOR than so far I have seen from the screenshots...

Hopefully I will be positively surprised. Both STO & SW-TOR...

It's being targeted to the nomad gamer crowd.

So because the graphics are not state of the art, its a pile of junk? That is just stupid thinking. FPS and racing games for example always have state of the art graphics because there is not much gameplay to focus on. MMO's are longer in production and are a lot more complex, so developers fortunately wont focus only on graphics. And at the time the MMO gets released the graphics are understandably not state of the art.

Another reason is that because of the client having to handle a lot more then just graphics, the performance requirement is relatively higher then with shooters. Nothing to be surprised or shocked about. If you expect the newest shooters state of the art graphics in a new MMO, then you are just an idiot.

When they say its outdated, they meant in the context of first person shooters. One of the major reasons that fps sequels sell, is because of better grapics. Thats simply because a shooter doesnt have much more features.

With a MMO a lot more features count then just graphics. Next time come up with an argument, instead of just a quote that is out of context please.

nah, i think the same. cryptic using the "champions online" engine for star trek online, i know this gfx-engine from the CO beta and i bet cryptic still didn't managed to bring in anti-aliasing for ATI cards..!

i think the star trek license is again a wasted license. at the moment the game have a average to high hype-level, most of it comes from the name "star trek" and the huge community, but i think short after the release no one anymore cares about this "game". champions online is the best example for it lol.

however! the art- and graphicstyle in todays "AAA"-mmog ttitels are most in time not my taste. star wars the old republic looks also very ugly (US-american pastel color palette..), way to cartoonish and in the general developed for 12 year olds.

I'm not a trek fan but the more I look at it, the more I like the game.

You really love to live up to your name don't you?

@ Chrisel

Yes it's just you and some very picky people.

This is not a game.

1. I don't know what world you live in where the screenshots of STO are horrible, but as someone who actually played the game at PAX, you must be blind, or overly picky.

And 2. You being "quite sure" it will fail means absolutely nothing unless you happen to be a dev on the team, because you have no clue what you are even talking about to make that judgement. Your sig says it all. Good day sir.

Nice mature replies. I am taking a wild shot here, but I guess I offended some arch-fanbois' feelings.

Thanks for making me the day. Anyway, back to topic.

I play LOTRO atm, which is many years old already, and even older when this awful looking ST-MMO will be out. I find it hard that someone with at least SOME objective view can say this looks even near to "good looking". It is closer to Anarchy Online than LOTRO, thats for sure.

And no. I am NOT here to make friends. Maybe you are. I have my friends out in the REAL world. I would never belive I would get any so called "friends" here. Anyone who think otherwise, seriously needs their heads examined. SERIOSLY!

Never judge a book by it's cover, Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. These are a few saying that renders your thoughts utterly useless. And although you got mature replies, your OP is a childish post becuase you speculate on quality of game based on screenshots. Wow! Never thought i would see the day that a game that has not even been released yet is being trolled cos of its looks. and to make matters worse you actually started a thread about it!

Oh btw LOTROL looks crap to me, so it must be crap as well by your shortsighted reasoning

"Mature replies to a childish post".... Heres many comments that smells despair, lol.

Well, I expect the GFX to be better in newer MMO's, not worse. WoW has alot of content, but the GFX is horrible. Same goes for EQ1 and many more games, which I dont play for those obvious reasons.

As an example: Try getting a 12 year old kid playing UO today. If you managed that, it would deserve a place in the history books. So the I ask again: Whats the ambitions for the STO...? Not much, judging by the STO screenshots if you ask me. Some might say the GFX is of lesser importance. Well, I think you are wrong. It is ALL about first impression in most cases when it comes to MMO; and if the GFX doesnt appeal you, well, most certainly you are gone. Today theres more than enough MMO's to try/test/play. I think those who would stick to the game, even if it's first impression "suck", is an outdying race. Just like me. If I dislike the GFX, I am gone.

Wether its FPS or an MMO. Simple as that.

Because there are only handfull of Star Trek fans amirite?

If your clueless statement here was anything even close to the truth the game will be a big success heh.

Weak trolling kid, very weak.

Logic will get you every time.

You need a lot to learn about the trolling art.

Let's continue.

You play Lotro.

I used to play it and liked it as a casual limonade MMO that it is but the game has the most ridiculous character models and animations.

They are laughable really.

And yet for you it has the best graphics since sliced bread lol.

Also, you sorta gave your age away when you said LOTRO has been out for many years :).

For a baby or a very young kid two years looks like very long time and many many years I guess.

@chrisel:
Do you read the responses or just wait to post?

You say WoW GFX suck, but it has the most kids playing it, so you argument falls down right there.

You have to understand "that everyone is not you" What you may think sucks may look  fanatastic to someone else. Seriously man, you have to understand that. Or just wait till you hit the big 4 0 and then you will be fine.

STO might be rather complex for you anyway whatever graphics they use.

Cryptic have already made a major mess of this game. The ships don't move like they should. I'll probably only play this for 1 month.

To each his own. I agree with you on TOR, those graphics look horrible. But STO, really?

You have to remember we're talking MMORPGs here not FPS so that is a false comparison.  You can't make a MMORPG with FPS graphics because of the huge amount of content and bandwith required. At least not yet. Age of Conan should be a lesson for all that you can't judge a game by it's graphics. Even thought TOR looks cartoony, it still has a large following that can't wait to get their hands on it. Same with STO. Gameplay and fun will always win out in the end and the majority of folks that have actually played this game have been giving positive reviews.

First aren't all the screen shots and trailer from pre-beta sources?  I think the trailer even mentions that.

I can't imagine this game will appeal to anyone but the die hard fanbois of Star Trek.

I actually don't think this game will appeal to the Star Trek fan.  I'm going to use SWG as an example.

For the true SW fan, Galaxies ISN'T Star Wars, but if you forget the SW part and take it as a ground/space MMO then it's acceptable (I'm not getting into the good / bad / Orig / pre or post - NGE thing here, just it as a game period.).

I think it may turn out the same way with STO.  The overall skin will be Star Trek, which will be good from an advertisement / financial point, but it won't be Star Trek ENOUGH for the hardcore.  It'll be like the old Star Trek Commnder games.  They were fun, entertaining, but not really Star Trek a la the various series.

The game is going to end up standing or falling based on how well it plays not it's name.

I like the way the space looks but think that the characters and ships and stations need more polishing, some parts seen in the screens look a bit way to toyish.
