Some clans tried to be anti-PK clans and protect newbies, and it didn't worked too well. Newbies tried to set them grey, looted them as they died to PKs, and were generally ungrateful. "NEW" clan works a lot better, because it is protected by major alliances, and their city if far from "safe areas" with zap towers. Let me explain: "Safe areas" are not "safe" for anyone. You can knockback someone into acid/lava when he is trying to bank. You can kill crafter and let your friend loot him. You can run into someone's sword or arrow, and let zap tower kill him. You can steal someone's mount. You can ninja loot. You can declare war just to gank a crafter. If you're looking for justice - join a clan of like-minded people and never go near zap towers. It's not only Darkfall problem. Eve and UItima had their own tricks allowing to be an asshole in "safe area". |

Originally posted by Dereknor If I want to craft, build a house, a shop and have sea battles, I play wurm online. that already has all of this even more advanced then in darkfall. But it just cost 5 €
I just expected more from a 50 € game, not just a short tutorial on how to move. Why is it that there are so many user made guides and explainations on how the game work, but none from the programmers? For a 10 € game it would be ok. But for such an expensive game, I expect more care for new players. I wonder how many players keep playing darkfall. Of cause you can make a hardcore sandbox game, that just the hardest players survive and like to play, if you can keep a mmorpg going with 100 players ;)
I think the problem is you've never played a non-mature sandbox game. The two you mentioned have been out for years, have item malls, and if I remember correctly aren't FFA full loot PvP.

Wurm Online is even more cruel then Darkfall when it goes to surviving and PvP. Its more of a Sandbox full loot game then darkfall ;)
You also need to drink and eat to survive there. But what are item malls? |

Using real life money to buy in game items, but from a store ran by the makers of the game. And like I said though, both of those games have been out for years.
PS: I don't see how something can be more full loot, unless you delevel as well or there is perma death.

Wurm online has perma-death
I just ment that being a sandbox game is nothing new, and it doesnt mean that you dont need to care for new players. There are also other sandbox games out for years which arent that hard to get into, but they are still sandbox games. |

Darkfall isn't hard to get into if you read the provided help guide which tells you how to do everything. The only difference between dfo and most other sandbox games at launch is that the UI feels a little clunky at first becuase it uses FPS mechanics. Most sandbox games don't start with tutorial islands/

I appreciate everyone's feedback on my posting. I would like to start our by saying everyone is entitled to their opinions --whether they are mature or immature --however-- my post is not intended to deface DarkFall or exaggerate on how it went during my first month of playing. (I didn’t over exaggerate on my deaths either. I suppose it was bad timing as everyone said it in my guild/clan… I had bad timing every session I played.. Something didn’t add up right? ) As for people who mentioned research: I did extensive research, ‘applied’ to beta testing, watched almost all the youtube videos on how things work and how to do certain things, visited many fan sites, but nothing prepared me for this game. I would just make a suggestion to players who don’t consider themselves hard core PVP/Grinders --wait until they release trials to the game before playing it-- It is simply not financially feasible to “try” a game for 50 dollars only to drop it before their free month is up. I have played MMO’s since Meridian 59 came out and would say this was the first game that made me feel passionate enough to give a review of how this game played out for me. PS: I created this handle in 2008 for LOTRO to get an in game item. I didn't create it to to delibertately flame DarkFall. |

While I have not played DF just yet, from what I am reading here, and from what I know about pvp games, this hits the nail on the head. Pvp sandbox games really seem to need a safe area for noobs to start out in order for the game to be successful. I am not sure I totally like the idea, because like 80% of the eve population never leaves empire, but I can't think of any better alternative and getting chain ganked hours after entering the game can't be fun. |
