Originally posted by SignusM Well the original SWG is probably one of the only games to ever survive a HORRIBLE launch. I mean, SWG was almost as bad as it gets, one of the worst ever. But Star Wars fans and brand name kept it alive. Hell, its still alive even after the NGE. Its probably one of the most mismanaged MMOs of all time, yet its still alive. This new one will be the same. If the game was FTP or something, I'd understand and be less critical, but its not. Its getting an MMO price tag for a game of Diablo. Not only is it not likely to be f2p if reports are correct it'll go down the same route as others(including sto unfortunately) and have some form of cash shop along with its monthly sub I really have my fingers crossed sto isn't go for the same type of game model. So far i know there are station hubs and you can meet people in 'warp' but beyond that i'm not certain. It certainly looks like they've created a bigger game world than swtor, but since cryptic became part of atari, I won't be fully put out of my suspicions until there are some vids available showing how open the sto world is or is not |

How about this argument: It IS Multiplayer and it looks extremely fun, not only does it look fun, but it's being made by a company that has a record of fun games.
I play games to have fun, what do you play them for? I play 50 dollar games for fun. I play MMORPGs at 50 + 15 a month + expansions, for a living persistant world I can immerse myself in. I do not spend 15 bucks a month for a single player game trying to grab the fad word and call itself an MMO. Sorry to step in but this is a great reply. I'm so fed up with the fun concept. MMOs are not supposed to be fun, they have to be something bigger than fun, they have to be just what you said. |

Fun is subjective and what 1 person considers so another does not. As a strategy fan I honestly dislike the current style of zero challenge gameplay that everyone wants to adopt. Unfortunately there is very little choice currently available for people who don't like the games that are of this type. Since crypit was acquired by Atari I'm dubious as to whether or not we are getting another 'version of for 8yr olds'. As to the fact that swtor is at least multiplayer the existing games along this line that are MO's rather than MMO's such as guild wars and DDO(I have tried both btw) seem to end up as glorified single player games rather than the alternative. Part of this is down to the fact that the feel is very different to an MMO. And i play computer games not only for fun, but also for a challenge and intellectual stimulation. MMO's also have to have a good sense of exploration and society(I even managed to stick with swg nge for 9 months for this reason alone) |

I actually quite like the single shard, multiple instance thing. Saves the inevitable server merge, my server is dead thing. Doesn't change how many people you see, just how many people you have access to. FE can do it on one server because their subs are really low =P But fighting in Canada with 100 other people is plenty full for my liking. That there are 27 other 100 people instances going that I can jump to doesn't bug me. That said STO is an IP MMO, meaning its not for you, its for them. Trekkies are the goal, not MMO jumpers. Trekkies will play this, trekkies will not jump ship to their nemisis StarWars the two don't co-exist for the trekkies. Hell there are whole comedies based on this, where you been ;) FYI I wish AoC, would just merge all servers into one PvE and one PvP and run the multiple instance thing but not looking like that will happen. Unfortunately they arent making this game for Trekkies they are making it for the widest appeal (casuals) I'm a Star Trek fan and from what I have seen and read I really dont have too high of hopes for this game too much "YOU CANT DO THIS" for the sake of alienating the same target audience that will leave the game and go to the next MMO they will ruin. Point being its a casual game just with a different genre and a big name IP that will not live up to its fullest potential cause of that audience they are going for and will go by the way that most MMOs have had for the last 5 years.. http://www.speedtest.net/result/1775656162.png |

You are absolutely correct . A vast majority of MMO's coming out lately are just boring as hell.
The games coming out the last few years have one or two things that make it fun to play for 4-6 mo, than this it starts to be repetition hell, and player move on to the next thing. They are dumbed down, non-challenging, non-rewarding pieces of crap.
Rather than recognize the gypsy attitude of players is the result of the poor quality of games, they try to justify themselves by saying the player market has changed. So now they are just developing games intentionally that just get your box purchase and try to hold you for 6 months, nothing more.
While I long burned out on WoW ... I'm hoping Blizzard's next MMO knocks it out of the park and repeats WoW's success ... so that we can get past this nonsense, and these developers will again realize players will stay for the long term if they just put the effort in.

I used to be Trekkie, but the emphasis of STO is way too much on space pew pew to be of any long term interest to me. I will try it out for the sake of Star Trek, and maybe I am surprised (for good), but as I see it, it seems like CO, something to play a while to wait for SWTOR. (Which better BE good!)
