"It'll take the stink right off that lizard."

I was thinking about finally buying this one. I played UO for many years and for all intents and purposes this is supposed to be a spiritual successor. But before I jump into the fire to discover for myself, I just want to know...

I read a message today where someone said about Darkfall - "my beef with open pvp and full loot has always been this. there is no meaningfull pvp or roleplaying, the only thing these games create is a world of thugs, for thugs, where hundreds of people's only desire in the game is to gank lower levels who cant put up a fight, for no good reason."

I don't care about newbie jumping, I was a newbie on UO and got ganked numerous times. But the beauty of Ultima was it was a living breathing world where PVP was a part of it, but not the focus. The WORLD was the focus and how people interacted, including PVP.

So is Darkfall another world with PVP? Or is it just one big PVPfest in some world? I have no desire to play one giant battle royale all the time. I just want a world with consequences, fellowship, and the option to do whatever I want, whenever I want. But if the point of this world is to just kill kill kill anything that moves, it hardly carries the spirit of UO.

Any players wanna clue me in?

It is a giant pvp fest in some world.

The games entire focus is built around pvp'ing, I highly doubt it would be your cup of tea, judging from your above statement.

There will never be a game with FFA PvP in it that will ever feel like UO again. This is simply because at the time UO came out, the crafters, the raiders, the quest doers, the roleplayers, had no alternatives. The more thick skin enjoyed the threat of danger in the PvP world, but the rest, moved on to EverQuest and WoW and all that stuff.

As far as Darkfall goes, a great deal of it is PvP focused, but there are roleplay focused clans out there you can find. Sorry I can't give you a clearer answer, but I'm sort of looking for the same thing.

More roleplay elements are added every single patch though, and it seems its getting more fleshed out than every with the housing additions, local banking, and all that stuff coming in the expansion. This may be of interest to you.

To the above poster saying its nothing but PvP, he clearly doesn't play the game.

This is pretty much the jist of it. Darkfall is a war sim, not a regular sim like UO, SWG, or what have you, That being said, they are adding more RP elements and more things to do that aren't PvP foucused; however, everything will have a PvP tinge because the game is designed around conflict, not conflict designed around everything else.

I'm not even looking for hardcore RP'ing, you know? I think Darkfall has what I want. It's free and open. The only thing holding me back is if everyone is doing the same thing (PVP/Ganking) how open/free can it really be? Being the only person in the world looking for something to do OTHER than hunting and killing all the time doesn't sound like a good time to me. Yet the basics of the system, skill based progression, open world combat, an actual sea to traverse, sounds so awesome. I'm torn on this one.

You might as well give it a try, but I suggest trying to find a clan of like minded people when you do.

I would recommend waiting until after this expansion. A trial may happen and would give you better insight without parting with 50 bucks. If there is no hope of a trial then maybe hop in.

I'm in the same boat as you, OP. I'll probably be buying it on thursday, and test it out. We'll see though. So, if you decide you don't want to get it, I'd be more than happy to tell you my unbiased first impressions. (When trying out new games, I don't compare them to other games. I evaluate the overall effectiveness of gameplay, layout, etc.)

And I'm not trying to start a flame war, I swear to God I'm not, but I was also looking at Mortal Online and thought about trying it instead. I hear I could buy the beta and start playing it now, even if it is a semi-shell of what its going to be. Nice thing about Darkfall is its already out and not a paid beta (although I'm assuming I'll hear arguments against that). Full version of Darkfall, or beta Mortal Online with the full game to come later?

I've gone back to UO too many damn times to realize its not the same as it used to be. Its still damn good, but not the world I used to know. I'm playing WoW right now, and it is great, but its still not filling that void. I appreciate everyone's opinions!

I don't know where you get the idea about the trial, because even though it will work in favor of those that are on the fence to finally decide whether or not the game is worth their money at the same time it will work against Aventurine since all those people will find this out for free ( i assume you meant free trial right? ).

As for the OP, well, to the question { Is Darkfall another world with PVP or a PVP fest in some world?} i would probably answer the later. But since there is no trial (a free one anyway) it's your money and you must decide in the end; so my advice to you is the same that Jack Crabb (Dustin Hoffman) gave to one General George Armstrong Custer (Richard Mulligan) in the movie "Little Big Man"

There's one thing that bothers me about a potential "DarkFall Free Trial" and for some reasons, I think having no trial may be better. I mean, the first 14 days you play in the game is mostly grinding and grinding (for whatever you want may it be stats, craft, magic, etc) and then after at least 10 days, you can finally start discovering the world but that's far from enough to actually enjoy the game.

-----

Anyway, to the OP, as someone else mentionned, I suggest you wait after the upcoming expansion is added. That new expansion should create slightly different activities and while the main focus of the game will remain FFA PvP, players will have a better at doing more than that.

Aside from that, I suggest you look at the clan NEW which is a clan made for new players. There's a lot of info (usefull links, etc) there that you might find more important and perhaps they will answer most of your worries or questions.

"An old UO vet"?

Why is this relevant to Darkfall or any other MMO/game?

If you want apples, you shop the apple vendor. If you want oranges, you shop that vendor.

UO is DIFFERENT THAN ANY OTHERS!!

Get it through your thick skulls that comparisons DO NOT WORK IN ALL GAMES!!!

Carry on with your non-MMO-playing, gotta post about BS all the time...make myself feel important no matter what, crap...

UO is old school. There will NEVER BE another.....

get over it and play what they call "The New UO/PvP today"

seriously.....

So you contradict yourself by questioning the relevance of his UO veteran statement saying it's completely different, only to turn around and say he should play the "New UO"?  He was just merely using his PAST gaming experience as a reference to compare what he enjoys in a game, not to say "Darkfall has to be UO in a new world."  Sounds like you need to "get over it."

I'm an UO vet like you, and with a select group of ex-UO guildies, we tried DFO.

I cannot say my experience was a good one. There is just one thing about DFO, and that's PVP. Everything else is still crude and not conducive to roleplaying. Of the 50+ people I regularly play with for years, not one is subbing DFO anymore. MO is still very raw too, I'd advise waiting to try both games.

The game did improve with some patches that were released, addressing some of the most grueling aspects of the game, but it still has a LONG way to go if you expect anything else than PVP. If all you want is combat, then it might suit your needs.

I also thought this would be the UO "sequel" we are all waiting for. But boy, was I wrong. A good sandbox game (excepting EVE) has yet to be launched. I heard good things about Fallen Earth, but I'm not so crazy about Cyberpunk/Mad Max games. MO is still very Beta-ish.

I keep on waiting.

If your on the EU server there are a few clans to think about.

New - Is a clan that accepts brand new players for 30 days. They will kit you out in basic gear and teach you the ropes show you around and help you find your feet. Most major Alliances will leave players from this clan alone but there will be griefers who will come after you. So its a softer entrance to DF

Yew Milita - This is an RP guild so they could be of interest to you.

Hyberion Alliance - There are a b unch of guilds inside this Alliance that are more than happy to help out noobs, RPers etc.

Every guild has people focused on crafting and doing other things than fighting. My ping has been bad for the last few weeks because of my ISP so I have spent myu time fishing, herbing and gathering from the farm. I then cook everything up and supply my guildies with a limitless supply of food.

The expansion also has player run vendors if you can afford a house.

Well I've been playing DFO nearly 24 hours and coming from a cynic that thought this game was vapourware right up until release I'd like to dispell atleast one myth about DFO. Firstly (so far) I've seen no evidence that DFO (right now) is a noob gang rape fest, I was pk'd once for no reason and that was it. Starter towns (atleast for orcs) are pretty quiet and uneventfull although I haven't played at the weekend yet.

Next I'd like to say that the combat system is better than pretty much any MMORPG I've played in the past. The one reason I say this is that I play alot of shooters online and DFO has more in common (combat system wise) with Battlefield than any MMORPG I've played. Also I'm sick of PvP = detatched button mashing fests decided by who has the most pots or falls asleep at the keyboard first!

You can go fishing, there's player housing, player cities, no instancing and open world sieges. I think there is only one way to find out if you like DFO and that's try it. Is it all about PvP? I don't know, maybe it is what you make it? Since you can do more than in anyother MMORPG, just that you're under threat of being wasted I suppose. However What I do know is that most other MMORPGs out there are about PvE and nothing else.

I think DFO is worth taking the plunge and trying out for a month, if you don't then you'll just never really know if it's for you or not.

DF still has long way to go to become "UO replacement".

Many people came to DF for PvP. DF offers "red PK" experience, clan warfare and politics, adrenaline rush, small and large scale battles like no any other game currently on the market.

There are some things to do besides fighting, gathering and crafting: There are rafts to look for adventure on small islands, locked treasure chests with rare items. Enchanting requires a lot of travelling to find rare ingredients all around the world.

Player houses become available in July. Seems like carebearish feature :-), but everyone was in rush to obtain a place which they can call home. This month we'll get player vendors, caravans and wandering mobs.

Player community is slowly changing. There are few successful merchants and crafters who don't PvP at all, but don't expect to become one if you're casual player.

In short: DF is not next UO. It's game with really good warfare / PvP slowly incorporating some features of UO.

On the other hand, Mortal Online is trying hard to become next UO. But with NDA in place there is no way to tell if it's worth 60$.

I never even stated any relevance, I was just clarifying his stand point.  Nor did I claim to have ever played UO in the first place, but I was merely pointing out your flawed view point.  He wasn't comparing the two so much as using it as a guide line to show us how he likes to play.  The only idiot here is the one getting defensive over nothing.

Lets face it, MMOs today are turning into single player console games with a chat box included.

11/11/09 5:32:10 AM#23

If you like UO, you probably will get sick of DF pretty quickly. If you are into FPS, then you might like it. Its really not complex enough to satiate the appetite for a real sandbox game. Make no mistake, theres very little to do when its all said and done.

Yeah I don't get where I said "It has to be UO part 2." All I'm saying is I enjoy the skill based open world freedom of UO more than the level based style of WoW (although I enjoy it as well) and I wanted to know, since the Darkfall developers themselves said that they were heavily influenced by Ultima Online and everyone I see on the boards says its specifically for "Ultima Online vets," if it was just one big PVP game pasted onto an alleged "open world."

And I purposely tried to word things to get actual responses, not attract the attention of jackasses with more insults than answers. So for everyone except one arrogant prick, I appreciate it.

It maybe worth it, especially in uses the best model of alignment system. The question is will it survive on the market long enough to implement enough features to grow the player base.
