Did the Fallen Earth guys purchase the client server framework of Star Wars Galaxies and just design new graphics for the game? The similarities aren't even subtle.

  • The menus are all laid out the same
  • The inventory is the same random mess
  • The mobs rubber band exactly like SWG.
  • The aiming system is that goofy NGE targeting crap
  • The combat is the same
  • Vehicles are treated in the same manner
  • The world size and objects are the same
  • The hunt and kill missions are just adapted bounty hunter missions
  • The quest system is the same.
  • You even have to expand the action bar in the same queer way as SWG, by grabbing the bottom of it and pulling down.

I just noticed that it even has the same crappy LOD vegetation.

 

Why didn't they just come out and say we've created Fallout 3 Galaxies?

Just wrapped up the 14 day trial they put out a couple weeks ago, and have to say I enjoyed it.  There's a lot to be said for simplicity of character in an interesting and expansive setting.  For now, though, my wife is dead set on seeing the new LOTRO expansion when it launches, and I just don't have enough life in me to tie it up in two games.

That said, I have noticed I now have this bizarre tendency in LotRO to reflexively wonder where I left my horse, whenever I'm preparing to ride somewhere.

It is _absolutely_ true. It was like the scales falling from my eyes. I wondered why the game felt so familiar. Then I realized what I was playing and started hunting for features from SWG and of course, they were there!

Look, I'm not trying to troll here, there has GOT to be some other hardcore swg players that notice the same thing. The guy pointed out to me in game that the BH missions where the same as the track and kills.

So, there has to be people around here that see it too.

You don't have to be hardcore to see surface similarities. However there are major differences on every point also. They're not identical and they're only superficially simlar. Quite simply you are wrong. Any comparison with Fallout is also completely off the mark.

I disagree, I think the OP is pretty much right, that is not necessarily a bad thing either IMO. There are a lot of comparisons to be made between the two games (again IMO). The combat in FE while more fleshed out is very similar to what SOE attempted with the NGE. The way in which the terrain is fleshed out is almost identical to what you find in SWG, even down to walking up just about any incline no matter how steep.

NPC behavior and pathing is very simmilar to SWG, as is the AI in general. Graphically the two engines are similar as well as the shadowing and bells and whistles.

The way it starts you out is another area which is very similar (little direction). I think its pretty obvious these devs played SWG at some point. Hell I will give you another feature that brings back that feeling of old SWG. Tiggs.

True, the devs of FE are gamers themselves, and what gamer wouldn't try to bring in the good points they had in previous games with them into their own? But, just because they bring in the feel of, or style of, something from the past doesn't mean they 'stole' the game or bought the platform. Seriously.

I agree with Czargio, I can point out similarities to 50 other games as well at least, doesn't mean they ARE that game.

Some of the OP comments are just stupid anyway, rubberbanding mobs?? OP computer sucks is a sign they use SWG engine??? World size is the same (OMG its big, must be the same game!) - quests are the same (just FYI - every game that you dont' read the quest content...they are the same - READ them then you might see they are different). Inventory a mess - yeah, has nothing to do with the OP's play style at all there.

Yeah, I know he says he isn't trying to troll, maybe true. Could just be he started a thread without thinking what he was writing first, and it just came out so bad it LOOKS like a troll post.

I was disagreeing with the statement you can not compare the two games, and that doing so was like saying all games are similar. The two games carry a lot of close distinctions that separate them from those other 90%. Some I highlighted in my post, though I really didn't feel like writing a book on the two games.

How is comparing them agreeing they somehow ripped things off? People tend to forget to at times use the word inspired, rather than cloned. Then again most just criticize anything and everything with those distinctions. Just as with music, past games influence those of the future. It is quite clear that the devs were influenced by games like SWG and EQ1. If you really think about it, it's very close to what you would have if SWG was designed in a manner that mixed it's 3 very different versions. Most notably the Cu and nge designs kind of wrapped into one.

I will agree with you there yes. Perhaps had the OP made the post saying Fallen Earth had many aspects inspired by SWG, then I would be more inclined to bite yes. That would be an accurate statement, or at least a statement I would agree with personally. His choice of terminology inferring FE was built on SWG was false, and that is why so many previous posters on this thread pointed him as a troll. I'm sure they wouldn't had if his terminology was accurate.

Pretty funny, I have to admit.

Obviously a troll or someone just wanting to give us a laugh, but either way, thanks. FE like SWG...ha!

Please support games that deliver a new and innovative experience.

Eve, Ryzom, Ultima Online, Fallen Earth, Asheron's Call, Darkfall, Wurm and, other similar games deliver immersive Worlds, not Maps with mini-games or killing with no story.

Even if you do not like the games themselves, support and appreciate the effort of developers to try something new.

 I have heard a few people in game say they're getting nostalgia playing this game because it reminds them of SWG. I never really could get into galaxies, but I'm loving this game.

Agreed, if the OP had worded his statements differently I might buy that he was just making harmless comparisons. As it is worded, and how he has the bullet points and such, it sounds like a troll, and I don't for a minute that he intended the thread to be anything other than a troll...

For anyone with SWG experience, try questing in Fallen Earth. Remember how Quests in SWG would go stale(would not spawn quest mobs and those temporary base structures) if you didn't do them within a certain amount of time?

It happens identically in Fallen Earth. I really don't give a shit if any of you believe me or not, I've seen enough to convince me they actually used code from SWG, there are too many pure mechanical idiosyncrasies that you wouldn't get if you'd actually written a game from scratch.

You see, this is exactly the problem right here. I have experience in SWG, played it for quite a while too, so that makes me part of the community that came from there to FE too. I seen what you remember from SWG, but I just dont' see the buggy content EXACTLY as you see it in FE. Similarities in game play style yes, buggy content no.

So anyone else in FE from the SWG community honestly seeing the same "pure mechanical idiosyncrasies" the OP is suggesting there is in FE?

How wrong can yo be? I mean, really. Sure, there is some very obvious influence (many of the devs are Pre-NGE developers), but come on now.

Honestly I'm amazed that someone hasent created a corbon copy of Pre-cu yet just without the Star wars IP.

If I was a dev studio that was making a sandbox game I would steal as much as I could from Pre-Cu.

 

Why would I play a pathetic themepark MMO when I could enjoy a masterpiece like Mass Effect, Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Dragon Age?

I played SWG at launch all the way through a few weeks past the NGE. If the OP is comparing  FE to NGE,..well then (shrug) that's his opinion I guess. If the OP means they are similar because they both have rifles,pistols and swords, then yes I would agree. BUT,..no way in hell is FE like SWG (pre-NGE). The quests back in SWG where very few. In fact I only remember Jabba's Palace and the Emperor's Retreat actually having quest. The rest of that game was a phukin mission grinder. You went to a terminal,..grabbed your 2  missions (preferedly in the same direction) then off you went. If you where in a  group on Dantooine,..you waited in line for doctor buffs, went to a mission terminal, and grabbed your 2 missions. THAT was SWG.

Right on with another type of mmo title, since we know SOE wont bring back PreCu to SWG.

Thats what the SWG EMU is for

Anyways, another mmo title using the old PreCu engine would literally Kick Ass (Imagine a FANTASY, SCI-FI or PA mmo using the same SWG engine).
