I used to play them all the time.  Recently, I cant seem to find a game to keep my interest.  I keep buying them, but end up not playing.  Anyone else falling into this slump?

I have the same problem.  I know the issue.

We are stuck in 2nd generation games.

We need someone to make a 3rd gen game with real economics, scarcity of resources, construction and destruction permanence, player made quest lines, and more.

I know what to build and given $40-50m I would build it.

well if you're losing interest in current MMO, You can take a look at Future MMO like TERA or Blade and Soul.

I am too.  More often than not, it's not because of the game itself, it's that on a widespread scale, the communities in MMOs are just going down the toilet.  Even the much-lauded LOTRO, with its supposed exceptional community...hell, I didn't even see anyone speaking until I was ~16 or so, and that person was just spamming and harrassing another player. 

It's hard finding something truely immersive in this genre, without wanting to solo all the time.  Nothing is more of a buzzkill in a game, than when I'm exploring some new area, and see chat scroll from a person named 'eYestabzU' talking about Chuck Norris or anal this or that.  And no, I'm not referring to WoW specifically.  From my experience, WoW was middle of the road, with worse being Aion and AoC, better being EVE.

I tend to get this from time to time. What I usually do to get out of the slump is to play oldschool classics. You know, stuff on the NES, SNES, or even text-based rougue-likes. The spirte graphics and old gameplay style eventually makes me miss the more modern games. When I get that feeling, I go back to playing new games.

In my opinion there aren't many good mmos out there at all. The best games for this year will be in the form of rpg and fps games yet again. The best mmos coming our way will be Guild Wars 2, The Old Republic and Torchlight MMO.

 This is what happens. MMOs nowadays focus on the super quick to get into, super easy, super casual kid MMO, in the vein of WoW, the simplest and most shallow of them all. These kind of MMOs do not hold interest forever, as they have no depth (except in regards to simple peoople who only need simple entertainment) 

Real MMOs are all but extinct. Eve, Darkfall, Fallen Earth. That's about all you have for choices. Vanguard was in that category but it's changed and Sony doesn't want to support it.

I've struggled with this off and on for the past year or more. Real life has intruded more often than not (growing up & having children of your own will tend to reduce and/or eliminate online gaming.) But I've also felt that I've changed to the point where I'll just completely lose interest in games I love for a month or more. (LoTRO for example.)

Recently I found some interest was rekindled when I was able to play for an afternoon with a friend. A very rare occurrence in my busy life. Other MMO gamers talk in terms of hours per week for their hobby but I measure in terms of hours per month. Sometimes as low as 4 hours, other times I may end up getting as many as 40. In a month.

I would say there are as many causes for your problem as there are games out there. For some it's just that they've moved on in their lives. For others it's burnout. Still others may just no longer be satisfied with what's out there. Anyway, I would suggest as some others have done, take a sabbatical and play your favorite FPS or single player RPG for a while. For me it's been a combination of adventure games and sometimes an FPS where I can just kill bad guys,  demons or aliens. 

Cliche: if it's becoming a second job it's not exactly a fun hobby anymore. Another cliche: definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. If you are trying 50 new titles and get the same result every time, it's time to take a break. Good Luck!

Im in the same boat with you. Im currently playing Eve Online and Fallen Earth. luckily I have my xbox360 to fall back on!

yeah Lance, I think that's how I feel.  Real life is slowly pushing in and my digital life is disappearing.  I always look for that feeling I had when I first started an mmorpg,  Ultima Online.  I cant seem to get it back.  I have become a buying fool mmorpg junkie.  My shelves are full of just about every store bought and digital download mmorpg there is. I have Eve, EQ, EQ2, Earth and Beyond, AoC, WoW, LoTR, UO, CoH, Champions Online, Crimecraft, jumpgate, DAoC (all expansions), Second Life and probably a few more I cant think of.  

It feels sort of like an addiction, continually buying them.  I also buy just about every popular 1st person shooter too.

I justify the costs because I am not a big party guy or drinker.  LOL  Oh well, maybe one day, a game will grab me and I will stop the spending and the looking for that feeling I once had.

Well one of the reason of course your spending money to play then you will realize that it's not worth it... I also felt it... But i tried to play other mmo that is Free to play so once i've tried it and i' bored with it I can just replace new f2p mmo... I don't have to spend money to buy the pay to play one right? so i have no regrets... better if you try some F2p game like... Atlantica Online, Flyff it depends on your likes... if you want a side scrolling i recommend Wonderking... I tried it because it is more cute rather than Maple story....

Ditto! I don't know what to play anymore but I still want to play online games. I'm still waiting for that game that will turn me on once again. ^^

yeah..i'm also losing interest in MMOs lately, i can't even find a godd f2p mmo nowadays, i only find copy cat mmo games which gets boring easily..well good thing there's console games

It's really about monotony. MMO's in general haven't changed at all in 5+ years. The cool factor is missing. The reward system for hard work is missing. Last but not least community is missing. I started WAR on day one release and it was weeks before you heard people chatting. No need to chat if you don't need help. I go to the store and see new titles and realize if i buy its just another door stop like the 90 i got already.

The next game i spend my money on will be a show stopper or i just won't play. THe best game i played in years was Fallout 3.  The story was phenomenol. the quests and landscape perfected to the story line and totally interactive. Open ended quests if you will in a totally open ended world.

There are MMO's that are not knight and elf MMO's out there. You might want to check another genre which i'm going to be looking for myself even though i played most of them

And the only reason PC gameing is "Dead" Is because the Console market Esploded... I Doubt the PC market has Deminished any. The Big Companys are only Intrested in makeing Money. So they by in large are jumping ship to The stupid Consoles. Hopefully it will let a lot more Indie Developers get into the Market.

I'm really hoping that Squeenix pulls a proverbial rabbit out of their ass and gives us gold with FFXIV.

If they fail, my hope for this genre will go down with it.

Hehehe...yeah, MMORPG's today just aren't any fun anymore.   I still play WoW for my friends.   Play EvE just to run salvaging missions.    Good news though...a new game is on the horizon that will set a new standards for online combat!   It's insanely fun and addictive as crack!  LOL!   Frak it is so mcuh fun you don't wantto stop playing - but you have to sleep, eat, work, socialize now and then - but OMG it is hard not to want to rush home and start playing as soon as possible.    Let me put it this way.   The other night I played for almost 8hrs straight and I haven't done that with a game in like - forever.    ::huge grin::   God I love this game!

I don't think that is what he means by future-generation MMO, hehe.  That game doesn't look any different from the everyday traditional MMO's we play today.  There is nothing wrong with that game though. It doesn't look bad and I am sure many people enjoy playing it but it doesn't quite fit the bill for what this discussion revolves around.

I hear the new Final Fantasy MMO is on the way out still.  That looks promising as does "Star Trek Online" and "Star Wars: The Old Republic".  I don't think it is the MMO genre that you are getting sick of actually.  Infact, I think it is the publishers releasing games only have finished such as "Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures" that you are sick of.  I know I am.

Get outside, work out, socialize. Graphics are HI-REZ can't beat 'em. Seriously, gaming is a time sink anyway. If there's nothing currently on the market that really speaks to you, might as well improve RL health and social connections.

When the next title hits, you'll have had some oxygen in your system, and be able to dive right in with fresh vigor. Seriously, people take vacations for many reasons. Sounds like you have a reason.
