Psychology my friend. Me, my first and main character always represents myself. I do get asked why and to be quite honest, I'm a good as looking guy. I'm all around sociable person, casanova, gamer, hard worker and I'm young fit and healthy. Now what you see in game is actually 80% (as close as I can get) to my looks, physique and style. That all depends on the MMO though. Now even though I got the looks, people in game sure don't think that, because of course even though my character looks cool by default being made after me, a high majority of the characters being played looks good too. My character in Aion is the closet customization I ever had to actually make my Avatar look like myself. Now I know for a fact many people don't make characters that look like themselves reguardless of gender. Why? Some say they want to feel as if they are in a different world. Me on the other hand I use my real persona. I'm not sure if that is true or if its not. Kind of like when people say they don't make male characters, because they don't like staring at a male avatar, yet sometimes it makes me wonder if they don't like looking at themselves or if they are comfortable with themselves. Me I look at my avatar all the time. I try to make him as cool as possible, because that's me. My main is me and my alts are all just fun things to make. I hear many excuses to things, but OP this is something that has to be studied for a long time. It's within the mind of that person and not neccessarily the game. I'm sure there are many gamers out there that are uncomfortable with themsleves just to make an object of attraction or an object that would like to see themselves as in the real world. It's quite interesting and i do like finding out people's word on the situation. I don't have no hate or shame to people who don't make an avatar with a precentage of accuracy to themsleves, because that is theirs, not ours. It makes me wonder though. -In memory of Laura "Taera" Genender. Passed away on Aug/13/08- |

I don't look at a mmorpg as a possible hook up spot. With that said I've never cared if someone played a female or male character because Vent doesn't lie. Roleplay what you want gentlemen let that cross dressing freak flag fly if you want. It's none of my business. PLaying: EvE, Ryzom Waiting For: Earthrise, Perpetuum |

Not very many games where you can play a fat girl. I'd love to play one more often. Fat bottomed girls make the rockiin' world go round, you know! |

I am one of those guys who usually plays a female char, Tho i never try to hide the fact that im a guy and usually meeting people i first tell them i am a guy lol. I use voice chat and my main group of people know who I am. Vent never lies is a good fact. I play a female char because well I have to spend so many hours in a day staring at my char while playing I want something nice to look at lol. I also always refer to my chars as separate people also I don't hold and notion that they are in fact me, Might be a little crazy but in after getting though a tight spot I sometimes say to my char man that was close you almost died good thing I was here lol personally I have no problem and know that a great many females play males. play whatever gender you want just dont start trying to hide the fact |

Playing a female toon is perfectly normal, did these whiners never play Tomb Raider?
I like to play male and female toons, usually male as fighter/warrior, female as scout/ranger. And I generally prefer my female characters. If I'm going to spend 1000 hours staring at the back of an avatar, being a heterosexual male, I would prefer it was female :P
I think attempting to make a dashing, heroic version of yourself to play on your computer for hours on end is rather sad and narcissistic. These are Role Play Games, not online dating. Choosing to play yourself shows a real lack of imagination.
And I agree with the OP, IF we were to start using avatars to represent ourselves IRL so that the school boys know who not to flirt with. I think age WOULD be more important than gender. But then again, that would only make life easier for the paedophiles to find their victims...
Anyway the whole subject is ridiculous, it doesnt make ANY difference to the game what age/gender/appearance the other players are IRL, so long as you are having fun. If your looking for love, I'd suggest trying a dating site or perhaps even spending some time AFK . |

You've probably heard this before; If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. You can apply that to a great many things and one that fits with MMO's; You can bet your dollars to pesos that no that scantily clad cute lil elf you're drooling over and cybering DOES NOT look like that in reality. Its probably a dude or some fat bored housewife that looks more like an in game orc. From experience the majority of them are unhappily married fat bored housewives seeking attention. If they send you a real life pic and it looks like a hot young chick ask them to send a CURRENT picture not one from 20 years ago. Alot of you are hard up gullible bastards. No offense. You probably don't have much experience with woman so when some in game female shows you a lil attention you basically get stupid. Play the game for whats its intended and don't waste your time trying to find your future wife.

RP = role-play as a character, any character you like.

Just as much as some people want their female avatars to become super sexy right? It did kinda sound like that, but it wasn't my point. Point was is that I put my own person and own persona into the game as I have no problem with it. Many others may have problems and such. I was kinda jump commenting on diffrent post here when I made the original post so it would take some surfing to kinda find what the diffrent post I was concluding on. I'm not perfect, but do you think I see myself that way because I'm confortable with my looks? It's all part of the phychology thing.

See, this just looks odd to me. I started playing Paper and Pencil role playing games, like Dungeons and Dragons and GURPS. You seem to be bragging that you have the ability to play your self in the game, but in a Paper 'n Pencil game, which inspired the modern day MMORPGs, you'd be considered a very poor role player. You say "Many others may have problems and such" but for old school role players this makes it look like you are the one that is deficient, not other players. I don't say that just to insult you, but to describe something it seems like you are completely unaware of. When we sat around the kitchen table playing paper and pencil games, the best role players were the ones that could convincingly play a character that was completely unlike themselves in real life. For example, a Dungeon Master that was a kind honest person in real life, playing a despicable evil character that is out to kill you and all your party members. Or a player that is generous to a fault in real life playing a character that is a miser and pinches every copper piece. Those sorts of things were what would cause your fellow players to admire and appreciate your ability to roleplay, and what made the game so much fun. Anyone can play themself. It doesn't require any imagination at all. Now, it's true that the modern MMORPG isn't a paper and pencil roleplaying game, and some people don't play it as such. They use it simply like a chat room while they play solitaire. This would be my description of WoW, where you solo while you whack mobs and chat. But some people still do play roles with their characters in an MMORPG, like an evil assassin, or a noble healer. So, it's kind of shocking to hear someone brag about the ability to play themselves in an RPG. It's like if I bragged about my ability to eat breakfast, or tie my shoes. To me it really shows how far down MMORPGs have gone. |

Given what I posted how could you possibly assume that I had been spurned because I state the reality thats what most of them are ? I speak from experience having seen a great many of the people I play with and their actions. I understand thats the fallback response to automatically assume wow he hates it because he didn't get it but thats failsauce, nice try though.

If you want to play as yourself there's no need to RPG. Just head on down to the woods and start killing boars. |

I always make one character to represent me with appearence as close as I can get it and with abilities I think I would use presumming the world existed. After that I pick abilities I would like to use but don't fit my character like healing and the like and I make characters that fit visually and personality wise with those abilities, be it a orc, old guy or a girl, whatever. I also think a lot of times younger players not only view playing the opposit gender as "gay" which makes no sense if you think about it. But also don't view female characters to be "cool" ie you can't have a cool character and it be female at the same time, it also might have to do with having a female in a position of power, ie in a combat role, when you in real life most likely can't.

Unfortunately assuming something without proof is usually the wrong thing to do. I'll do what you did and dumb it down abit so you understand what I'm getting at. Hahaa you pretty much insulted yourself in an attempt to prove a point. You might as well have said "I'm one of those fat bored housewives/fat dude who plays a female elf and don't like someone shattering my illusion because I don't get any attention in RL." You see that was being extremely sarcastic in making fun of your post. I'm even going so far as to point out the sarcasm because I don't think you'd understand and I can't really draw you a picture either. Given the statements I made assuming what you did is even more ludicrous. Besides all it would take is looking at some of my post history to see some of the things I said in a post concerning crazy people in MMO's.
