EQ2 and Aion are the main 2 off the top of my head that are very wowesque in gameplay mechanics.

Might also try Runes of Magic and Chronicles of Spellborn. I didn't particularly like them all that much, but they seem to get pretty decent marks from ex-WoW players.

Then um...don't play WoW?

If there are no other mmo's that peak your interest then don't play an mmo. They can be addicting I give you that. I've been just playing single player games the past 2 weeks and they are so superior in game play, but I digress.

Aion is not very wow like after about level 25. If you like Lineage 2 or those type of games then you would enjoy Aion. You said you didn't like Lotro, that is what I would have recommended but that's out. You can give Warhammer or AoC a shot, I believe both of them have free trials. I would suggest Guild Wars but that is radically diferent from your standard mmo. EVE has a 10 day free trial as well I believe and it's a quick download as well.

You just missed the free trial for Fallen Earth but maybe they will have one next holiday.  I got my cousin to play he was a WoW player for a year and he likes FE so far.   I played WoW off and on for a year but IMO FE blows WoW out of the water, but thats me the Indie guy.  I really don't care what the Popular Vote is, because I hate mainstream stuff anyways.

It's not a bad game; the combat is fast-paced and flashy and (of course) you can fly and shoot lasers from your eyes and stuff.

There is only one server (like EVE) but it is heavily instanced, heavily zoned, and has loading screens.

The combat is rather simplistic compared to other MMO's. A 30 minute old character in WoW will have more skills and abilities than a 24 hour old character in CO. For the most part, you'll "energy-build" (i.e. auto-attack) and spam 1 or 2 other attacks for hours on end.

Not a bad game, but not great.

Sigh....so many players with this mindset. When will they ever learn Game mechanics > graphics.

Not that I am saying Fallen Earth has great game mechanics...just a general statement. Did FE in beta and at the time, it was terrible. Laggy as all hell, lame quests, bad animations, etc. But...that was beta. No idea what it may be like now.

I'd give LotRO a shot. I believe there's a trial. Personally I found EQ2's controls too clunky and the graphics unappealing.

If you're more into PvE, I'd recommend LOTRO. I'd just offer one advice, don't hurry to reach end level, you'll miss so many good things on your way there.

If you're more into open world PvP, Aion is also an alternative. Just keep in mind that this game is not quest driven in it's PvE part (aka you'll need to spend quite some time killing mobs). I just mention it because some people are shocked coming from quest grind heavy games to ones that are more into mob farming.

One last thing, I hope this thread is not derailed into pointless arguments regarding the merits and flaws of the proposed games.

People that are suggesting WoW clones to the op are wrong. Don't play a game that will remind you of WoW play a new type of mmo, go for sci-fi, maybe sandbox or leave the genre altogether and play single player games for a couple years.

EQ2,VG,Lotro, Aion, WAR, AoC are all below average clones. Sure they have a couple good features but overall cannot touch WoW.

If your stuck on fantasy, themepark games only just go back to WoW and roll an alt because none of the other fantasy games compare. It's almost as if people play those games just so they could avoid the most popular mmo on the market.

It's similar to people hating the more popular sports team or rock band because everyone else likes it and they try to rage against the machine.

The fantasy themepark genre is so fucking worthless right now a average game like wow is king its sad.

Why would I play a pathetic themepark MMO when I could enjoy a masterpiece like Mass Effect, Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Dragon Age?

That's why I tried 3 times to re-enter EVE, and that's why I'll play ST (even when it will be not a Blizzard quality game) alongside WOW, but seriously playing anything of those mentioned in your post indeed is JUST playing "below average WOW clones".

Just stop pretending, IF you are really bored with WOW, those games are a great way to the nut house.

AND ... in the long run they kill ALL further intrest in playing otherforms of MMO's (like I always said).

Even DK 64 had MORE originallity than the Wow clones.

Dunno if it'd help, but I usually supplement playing a MMO for an extended period of time with a FPS game. Helps stretch the atrophied twitch reflex muscles.

I believe, that just like everything else, if you do one thing for any extended amount of time the fun bar goes from feeling like you're "playing" to "working"... and after you figure out the game mechanics, what to do and where to go to the point where you're just grinding out quests or xp rather than just enjoying what you're doing then the magic is sort of gone. No matter what game you go to, you'll see through the smoke and mirrors of the game mechanics and feel the same thing... the thing you're tired of. Usually, for me... that's level progression/grinding.

So, I play games that are more action oriented and twitch reflex. It may not work for everyone, but it's helped me in the past when I was just bored of MMO's in general.

It would help if you let people know what you are looking for in a game.

Other than what games have the second most players you have not really said what you look for in an mmo.

I personally despise the term, 'wow clone'... But it is, I guess, one way of saying, 'this is and that COMPARED to wow is blah.' Which sucks, because comparing one game to another with the same genre will always find elements that are similar to each other.

yes, I agree with your suggestion: if niche sandbox games does not suit you, stop playing mmo altogether and just stick with single-players or go find another hobby or something.

Well if you still like fantasy MMO's there is always L2 if you don't mind the grind after 60+ and poor quests in the game.

Currently playing: Aion

Dont use the term "WoW Clone" I would prefer if you said Everquest clones and put WoW in the same bag as the others.

One of the coolest cloning is the barrens in wow to look totally like the commonlands in EQ, what the heck, even the village is called crossroads... =P

Playing: Aion, World of Warcraft, Dragon Age Origins
Waiting for: Star Wars: The Old Republic, Mass Effect 2, Final Fantasy XIV
