What's the difference in playing a skinny girl if you are actually fat, and playing a girl if you are a guy?

There's a certain segment of the MMORPG players, I tend to think they are really young, that get somehow offended if players do not pick a character that is the same as their real life gender.

I think it's because those younger players want to flirt in the game with the opposite gender, and it embarasses them to find out they are flirting with someone that is their same gender.

But does that mean you have to play a character that actually looks like you, or just the same gender?

What if you play a hot skinny female, but you are really a very fat and not very attractive female? Does that NOT offend these same players to flirt with a fat girl, and I'm talking like 300 lbs plus, that has a cute skinny avatar?

Or, what about if you are say, over 60? Does it not offend these players to flirt with what looks like a 16 year old girl avatar, but really the woman behind the keyboard is old enough to be your Grandma and has no teeth?

Or, lets' go the other way. You are flirting with waht looks like  a hot 21 year old woman, but the girl behind the keyboard turns out to be 12, making you a pedophile. That's ok, you don't mind being a pedophile, but god forbid you flirt with the same sex because that would be so wrong? I'd rather you flirted with the same sex than that you were a pedophile, That seems MUCH MUCH worse to me, but you don't see threads where people go, YOU MUST PLAY A CHARACTER YOUR REAL AGE! only that you must play your real sex.

I mean, if you insist that guys have to play guys, and girls have to play girls, then why do these other scenarios not bother you? You really don't mind flirting with 12 year olds as long as they are the opposite sex? That is truly disgusting.

And if you say, YES I MIND THAT! then to be the same, we'd need 12 year old looking characters for the 12 year olds to play, just like you want the men to play male characters and the women to play female characters.

I agree with you man, insecure players are just being blinded by their own bigotry.

Just to make things clear...
I speak for myself and no one else, unless i state otherwise mine is just an opinion. A fact is something that can be independently verified, you may challenge such but with proof. You have every right to disagree with me through sound argument, i believe in constructive debate, but baseless aggression will warrant an unkind response.

I have often seen, OMG! You're a guy and you're playing a hot female character! That's sick you have problems, that should not be allowed!

I have never seen, OMG! you're 12 years old and you're playing a hot female character! That's sick, that should not be allowed!

I mean you can only come to the conclusion that the people upset about someone not playing their proper gender really don't mind being a pedophile that much.

The pitfalls of meeting people online.

I played SWG from launch to NGE.  I was so very excited because I am a huge Star Wars fan.  Started the game as an Artisan and within a couple of hours I was in the cantina playing music.  Was absolutely shocked when one of the first questions I got from another player is are you really a girl?  This was my first MMO, and I was even more shocked when saying yes I was asked to prove it.  I was like why in the world do you care?  This is just a game.  I also thought the person was a perv, because they actually wanted me to upload a picture someplace.  Just to be clear I wasn't flirting or anything just chit chatting with the various cantina customers about the game.

So the conversation continues and I point out that no I'm not really a girl but a woman and actually I might be old enough to be their grandmother - LOL that actually freaked them out more!

Moral of the story - be careful what you ask - you might get more information than you can handle!

Genders' are a generalization and weight is a specific.

There's a difference between me picking to be blonde (having black hair) because it's a feature moreso than gender.

See, you pick Male / Female...  THEN you choose hair color, style, weight...

They aren't in the same category.  It's the volume of nurological associations that are attached with the general vs the specific warrenting a completely different emotional response.

There's this science called psychology.  Its been around for awhile.  Odds are their conclusions are a lot more accurate than the ones you'll get on an MMO forum.

I guess we tend to think that most other people are like us, and I'm not into perving on MMORPG characters. But the truth is a lot of gamers are pervs and we'll never stop them from perving on other players. And these pervs will always get freaked out when they figure out the gorgeous pixel girl they are perving on isnt' real.

I would submit that "underage" is a generalization, and not a specific.

Like, you should not have sex with girls that are 12 or younger would be very general.

See, you pick age appropriate, underage... THEN you choose hair color, style, weight....

I would be more worried about the volume of neurological associations attached to a pixelated representation of a female, more often than not of a non-human race...

In the future, we'll get body scanners that must be used in order to create a character in said MMORPG. They wil copy a large amount of things from you and use them for your avatar. To work as intended, you'll have to be fully naked when you use it(Don't worry, devs won't take any spare pics of you, I promise).

Comparing MMOs with burger companies-the epitome of logic.

If you're just making new threads to be stupid in them ...

well ok, i guess that's a good enough reason.  Can't really tell you to go be stupid somewhere else.

Just let me know I need to lower my expectations of the debate first.  They were instantly reset to zero at the first sign of a furry, but that didn't come until a few replies in.

Are you trying to say that age is not a generalization, or it is?

You changed the dam subject / title of the post AFTER I posted.  The original post was about playing a fat character or a girl, not a difference in age.

I will no longer partake in any of your threads since you ninja edit.  Fight like a samurai!

There is no difference. They are both normal and there is nothing wrong in either situation.

I apologize for editing, but the title needed work.

I agree that gender is a generalization, and body type is not.

However, would you also agree that age is a generalization, similar to gender? You look for the right gender. But you also look for the right age. You don't go hitting on 6 year old girls just because they are female do you? Don't you immediately generalize into pre-puberty, post puberty?

If so, why would you be so freaked out if someone plays the wrong gender, but not freaked out when they play the wrong age?

OMG! he's a guy playing a girl! That's wrong! He MUST play a male character!

But never, OMG! She's a 12 year old playing a character that looks over 18! She MUST play a character that looks like a child!

Why are you worried about one and not the other, when both would be inappropriate to flirt with?

I find it weird if you play a female character and you're a guy, if you don't play on a RP server.  I can understand RP but it just doesn't appeal to me to play a female character.  Do I care if people do it?  No, I just wouldn't.  I also understand that most of the female characters are being played by males.  That's just the way it is.  When I first see a female in game I don't think of them as being a male right away, but it's not hard to tell after awhile.

Do you also find it wierd that a 60 year old woman plays a character that looks 18? Or that a 12 year old girl plays a character that looks 18?

If not, then why are you bothered if the person behind the key board of a hot looking female toon is male, but not bothered if it is for example a 6 year old little girl?

How many MMOs allow you to pick the age of your character?

Like OP mentionned, it's mostly young players (we're talking about 12-15 years old gamers). They are barely starting to learn about internet social interaction and don't know the meaning of RPG yet (and we're talking about Role Playing here). Of course, that's not the case for all of them but it does apply to many.

Honestly, just let them complain. Even if you try to force logic into their mind, they'll mostly try to rationalize things with stupid analogies and arguments that doesn't make sense. They'll learn eventually (hopefully). Otherwise they ban gender-bending in their game *point at a game publisher in China*.

Luckily, the issue doesn't seem as bad with older gamers since we more open-minded and are less likely to "hit" on a fellow gamer (unless they have met through Ventrilo for exemple).

The point is people are not bothered by this, but ARE bothered by a difference in gender.

They could just as easily complain, OMG! That character is a hot looking 18 year old girl, but it's being played by a 6 year old girl! That's wrong! They should ban anyone under 18!!!! Or, OMG! That hot looking 18 year old toon is being played by someone that's 60 years old! They should age verify!!!!!!!

But this is rarely, if ever, as big an issue as gender.

Some players, mostly male, seem to get upset if the gender of the player's character doesn't match the actual player, but nothing else, like age, seems to upset them the same way. Although, as I've stated already, it seems to me being a pedophile is much more gross than accidently hitting on the same gender.

Why is it that these, what I think are mostly young males, are worried about the same gender, but hitting on a 6 year old girl doesn't seem to bother them?

The answer is yes, some games do have character choices that look very young, like 12 or under. Most of them have the Anime style of art.

You can be this race, in the same game where you can play this race:

How many? I don't want an exact figure, a rough estimate will do.  From my experience, the closest thing most games offer for age manipulation is gray/white hair.
