someone explain it to me, i'm not really sure why people are so obsessed with having a pet in a mmorpg

its something that seems fairly new as i've been playing mmos for far to long, and i've never seen it be such an important thing to so many people

..... are you all just sad you don't have one irl or something?

Not sure what you mean; are you referring to pet classes, or non-combat pets?

Combat-pets is a class role, like tank, nuker or healer. Every one of 'em has their devotees. Pet classes have been around since the dawn of MMOs; I had a tamer in UO.

Non-combat pets are just decorative and funny. It's a giggle to fight a dragon with a baby penguin in tow.

Gotcha. Can't say I understand the "gotta collect 'em all" mentality of pet-collecting in MMOs either, but I guess it's no different to people collecting trophies and rares in older games.

^this

They are nothing but a In-game collection.

WHy do people collect coins in real life?

Why do people collect things in real life?

Same logic, but on a in-game avatar

A generation that grew up watching Pokemon? Dude, this isnt like something out of Unsolved Mysteries...

Just to make things clear...
I speak for myself and no one else, unless i state otherwise mine is just an opinion. A fact is something that can be independently verified, you may challenge such but with proof. You have every right to disagree with me through sound argument, i believe in constructive debate, but baseless aggression will warrant an unkind response.

because they are beautifull, because for some ppl 'gotta catch them all" is part of a feature to acomplish in their game (play pokemon on GBA =p), some are rarity so its a form to grow a e-peen among others, or just to see WTH they can do, and the REALLY useless wolf and Strider(ok this gave fast movement, not so useless) .

I lvl´d a Phantom Summoner and a Warlock in Lineage2 (till c4) just to see wth those shitty pets could do, along with the Dark Panther of my main Dark Avenger.

and behind the curtain if u can make a pet system u surely can have ramifications for other things =)

This is just like...

Ultima Online... that MMO that launched WAaaaaaaay back in 1997.. had a skill called "Taming".

There were these players that called themselves "Tamers" who ran all over taming things and then stood at west brit bank selling them to people who were to lazy to run all around taming them.

So I'm not sure what "far to long" is... but Pets have been in MMO's since close to the start (as UO wasn't the first MMO... but was fairly early ... 12 years ago...)

Being able to choose the skills you want to use, offers much less variety than pre-made class based systems.

You must be very young since those of us that in FACT have been playing MMO's for much longer than you have seen pets in games. Example: Ultima Online and EverQuest are two of the better examples.

I would say learn about MMO history before you post?

Im trying to figure out why people are soo obsessed with having to know why other people play the way they enjoy themselves in an MMO, that is even more strange.

That was most likely a comment towards Combat Pets. The OP is talking bout Non combat Pets.

As my sig say I like the Holy Warrior Arch type, some people equally like the Hunter/Ranger Archtype, which usually has come  to having connection to Pets of the Wild.

nah, i just forgot about tamers in UO.. and pets in general.. long time ago (honestly the game feels like a distant memory) and i hardly touched EQ ... and i started playing online games on BBS's , even though there were hardly massive

L.O.R.D. had "pvp" if you didn't sleep in the inn you could get killed while logged off haha ... roll of the dice type shit

I always thought it was an e-peen contest that everyone could participate in.  Seeing who has the most, or the rarest, or the most expensive.  It's something to do while standing around waiting for raid to start, enough said.

When has a real life Collection not be the same thing?
