DENVER, Nov. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Sony Online Entertainment LLC, and Wizards of the Coast LLC announced they are developing Magic: The Gathering - Tactics, an online, 3D turn-based strategy game played within the rich Magic: The Gathering Multiverse.

"By collaborating with Wizards of the Coast, we're able to combine the strengths of both companies to develop an innovative, online, 3D game based on an extremely popular IP," said John Smedley, president, Sony Online Entertainment. "We're going to be taking the Magic: The Gathering Multiverse places players have never seen."

"The growing Magic: The Gathering community has an insatiable desire for great strategic game experiences. Sony Online Entertainment is the perfect partner to transform the best of Magic's story, strategy and competitive play into a fantastic 'Tactics' game experience for current and new Magic fans," said Greg Leeds, president, Wizards of the Coast.

Magic: The Gathering - Tactics will allow players to command forces of dramatic 3D figures and powerful spell cards pulled from the Magic: The Gathering Multiverse. Players can participate in single player scenarios or jump right into PVP action against other players worldwide, 24 hours per day. Magic: The Gathering - Tactics is expected to feature regular content expansions, a robust tournament environment, an achievement and rankings program, and original stories of the Planeswalkers of Magic: The Gathering.

Magic: The Gathering - Tactics is being developed by SOE's Denver studio and scheduled to be available for the PC in early 2010, with a version for the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system to follow.

SOE Denver is formerly Worlds Apart Productions. Those guys have a lot of experience developing online trading card games and strategy games. Star Chamber, The Lord of the Rings Online TCG, Star Trek Online TCG, Pirates Online CSG, Legends of Norrath Online TCG, and Star Wars Galaxies Online TCG, and some others I'm sure.

Sort of interesting Wizards wants this game when they already have the Magic Online TCG and that console Planeswalker game. This one sounds a little different though, so maybe it's targeted at a different audience.

Don't know if there is any way to tell whether or not this will wind up being a full MMO

I would love to see that sort of strategy introduced to MMOs, though.  And I believe that the genre could do with more turned based combat.  I would actually prefer a turn based MMORPG, but the only option for that right now is a F2P cash shop MMO.

Legends of Norrath Online TCG, and Star Wars Galaxies Online TCG are the same game and products of the company since SOE took over. Can hardly wait the fate of this partnership.

I've been waiting for a MTG game to mix the CCG's strategic depth and still have good graphics. The old DOS game was fantastic, but dated now. The current MTG online is graphically weak and too expensive for me to take seriously. That real-time MTG game that came out a few years ago was a joke at best.

Failure + Failure = Epic Failure

Sorry, but neither company has come out with anything good in years. Many many years.

Does this mean I'll need to pay $100 for a unit that wipes all other units on the board or raises my resource pool to an absurd level in just a few turns?

Bingo, Drajaic! These two has-beens in their respected gaming former glory united as the toilet bowl of marketing madness allows them to swirl in a combine goo of smelly goodness as they quickly spin in the flushing of human sanity down to the memory of the sewer of days long gone by. TA TA Turds!
