60% of my friends hate games and most of them that like them only play like one or two console games a year and then a handful of them actually own a PC and play games on them. The problem is we all like different games and theres a few we do all like such as Half-Life but only one person out of everyone I know likes mmorpgs. The main problem is everyone doesn't want to get locked down to a subscription or they just find grinding really boring and alot of them hate the combat and crap graphics. I remember one friend trying EVE Online and left the Station, tried to shoot the nearest ship and got killed. He said the game sucks cause you can't kill everyone like Counter Strike and left.

The one friend I have that plays mmorpgs only likes WoW and has tried all the rest but thinks they all suck cause they just arn't as polished and don't have good combat like WoW or when he was playing EQ2 he said the graphics suck. Though when we try to play games together it's impossible because we're on at different times and we have social lives and work and everything else. We only get like one play time together a month and frigging even then it's an effort to get in sync and meet up. Most mmorpgs you have long travel times and thats great I love seamless worlds but it's not good for playing with RL friends. By the time they get to you then you're both fedup and bored.

Just wondering does anyone actually play with RL friends? The reason I didn't like Left 4 Dead is because it was such an effort to get 3 of my friends in the game at the same time because we all have lives. So you always have to get a stranger and it just ruins the game.

Love the MMORPG concept, but sick to death of M.M.O. Repetitive Pointless Grinds..

I dunno about anyone else, but just want to say, I've almost always had the same issues as the OP. I've never been able to game online with RL friends, for all sorts of reasons.

Until my gf took an interest in Aion, that is. Aion, of all MMOs. Guess she was drawn in by the higher than high fantasy bit. Eh, not that I'm complaining, though. but, I digress - before now, it's been years since I've played with anyone I know IRL.

I always play with a core group of rl friends, but this doesn't mean I limit myself to playing only with them.  We all have different schedules and different lives, if I spent all my time waiting around for them to log on I'd never get to play.  Same goes for getting them all to play the same game, people just have different interests.

I think the key is a happy medium.  Don't assume that just because you don't know someone irl, they will suck.  Take the time to get to know your gaming community.  You will be able to pick out the people you want to hang out with just like in real life.  In my opinion the best and only real reason to play MMO's vs. other games is the gaming community it creates amongst people of similar interests.  So, get outside of your comfort zone and meet some new people!

I don't have any RL friends so I guess you could say I play with 100% of them.

People have real life friends?

It depends, the majority of my game playing with real life friends has been FPS multiplayer where we can all get on the same team and battle it out. But there was a short span of time where I played an MMO with real life friends but it is tougher to do because of time investments and such so I don't anymore.

I play with the same set of friends in RL. Sometimes we are not always in the same game, but most times we will settle in on the same one. There are about 7 of us, and MMOs make it easier to hangout due to having families and weird scheduels. When we plan it and can get the time we love to hang out together in the real world to see movies, have dinner or just hang at someones house. But with kids and jobs it isnt as easy as it was 10 years ago.

It doesnt even have to be MMOs.

Recently we even got some of the wives/girlfriends to play games with us. We even helped them learn TF2 and had a boys vs girls night. Nothing says love more than having your sig other kick your ass across the map... and thats only because my mouse was broken.. yeah thats it.. the mouse...

When we are not playing the same game we hang out in vent and just pick on each other.

Guess I was lucky to have friends that enjoy games and are willing to try any game the rest of us are playing.

Aye, back then it was easier to settle everyone in a single game.

Now with MMOs being pumped out on a 6 month basis it gets harder due to what we call the MMO ADHD effect. Everyone bounces between the next big thing and people start to go their own way.

RL friends and family are the only people I group with, if that's what you mean by 'playing'.

I played WoW for a little while with a buddy.   But I had not intention of going to War.

I find it amazing the developers who have never even been in a fist fight, or designing fighting mechanics.

My friends sort of frown upon it, so no. I must say i do relish the oportunity to take on something as involved as MMOs with people that i have no irl connections with. Its a part of what makes it relaxing and provides me with a chance to get away from many of everydays stresses.

Just to make things clear...
I speak for myself and no one else, unless i state otherwise mine is just an opinion. A fact is something that can be independently verified, you may challenge such but with proof. You have every right to disagree with me through sound argument, i believe in constructive debate, but baseless aggression will warrant an unkind response.

I started played wow with a big bunch of rl freinds for about 5 years. I quit for the third and hopefully final time 9 months ago. They all still play. Had a great time and treasure the memories and no other mmo experiance out of everything I have played has come close to playing with my m8's, but don't think I could ever face playing wow again. Hopefully we will all hook up again for KOTOR.

Most of my RL friends don't play MMOs.  I do have 3-4 that do and all of them play WoW exclusively.  Since I refuse to play that, the answer is no.

Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR
Playing Now: Nothing
Hope: None

I played WoW with RL friends, about 6 of them still played while I took a break. And when I resubbed today, 2 of them bombarded me as soon as I logged in (they thought I was coming back later on in the week.). Two play on another server now, running a raiding guild under the same name we founded our original guild under. One plays (with his son) at different times than I do and one is actually my wife :P

If I tried another game I'd be pretty much on my own, unless it strikes me enough to actually hound the people I play with to switch and so far NO game that has come along in 5 years has convinced me to deal with the hassle. Besides, I see no harm in interrupting their enjoyment while I try different things.

I used to play FPS games with a few RL friends, and in the past few years have been playing MMOs with my brother, friends, and coworkers.

It was RL friends (co-workers) that got me started playing MMO's (EQ). Now that there are so many MMO's out there we are typically playing different games, but upon new releases we are often playing the same game though we are in different guilds.

I have 2 that I've played every MMO with.  Since we all live in different states now, its one way to hang out besides chatting on the way home from work=)

Back in EQ I had three real life friends I grouped with when we could.  Since then, no.  Two of the guys seem to have lost interest in mmorpgs (can't blame them) and one is playing WoW.

The guy playing WoW got me to try it at one point and I did because he's my friend but I couldn't stomach it.

A bunch of them are playing Aion right now but I don't feel the urge to join them.  I figure I'd let them get their jollies out and a few of them are already getting tired of it.  There's about 3-4 of them that I play with and generally we get together every week and play something for a while.  However none of us expect the others to come running when we try another game of our own choosing or hound them when they play nothing like I do.  I'm too busy with work anyways and see nothing that grabs my attention at the moment... except maybe Borderlands but that's not an mmo.

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I porn surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of 'hot xxx galore'. While I clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", I muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, "404."

I'm not at the moment (except with my husband) but I have in the past.  It's really great fun to play with personal friends.  I've also been playing MMOs with the same guild for about six years or so.

Trick question, MMO players don't have real friends.

I used to but my RL friends would switch games every week while I like to stick with a game...and now I don't have any RL friends so the answer is no. ^^
