I read this response to a thread on the official forum...forums.ageofconan.com/showthread.php

"getting back on topic. A few of us logged on last night, tried out the Iron Tower. A few friends had to convince me to re-install the game just to give the patch a try. I just have to say meh to this. Nothing exciting or different about this instance compared to any other. We haven't played much the past few months and were able to breeze through it, granted we are fully T2 geared.

The veteran rewards is just ok. I like it for adding swift mounts to all my level 80 toons. The veterans path is nice also, along with all the other paths you can buy. Other than those things, most of it is just fluff.

So after this patch, we played for maybe 3 hours last night, tried the new content and said to each other, "now what"? I gave away about 100 gold to random players in the trade post and then logged off.

I honestly wish there was something more to keep me immersed but I just don't feel at this time continuing to subscribe or play this game is worth it."

Given that 1.05 is a patch without a whole lot of support by their playerbase. Sieges are busted, and though the game has never been in better shape, the population is clearly in the worst shape its ever been in and on the downtrend, the next patch is months away from the live server and if they had fixes in it for the sieges and other busted things would they dare hold those off? Lord Bonezy asks, why not shut the live game down, for the 3-4 months between now and the launch of the expansion, and re-focus the team, the mission, compile some to do lists for the new product and do some fucking voice overs for the original and sell the whole damn thing as a new game in March? Doing so would cut alot of the daily bad press of the original failure from damaging what might be a fairly good rep with the new product.

Ofcourse the expansion won't be the 2nd coming but it might just be a fairly decent product that makes it on its own without the hype/spin machine or without the titanic anchordrag that is AOC at this point.

LOL why would they do that?  Some of your questions have been decent, but this one is just ridiculous. The people still playing this game either love it so much nothing short of Funcom adding flying Elves with sparkly, oversized weapons is going to make them quit, or are just biding time until something better comes out.  Not only would they lose all the money the 60-90k or however many subs they have are paying each month, they'd actually have to refund portions of multimonth subscriptions for the shutdown time and lose even more money.  They'd also risk a big chunk of those people never coming back.

That's silly. If you did that you would lose almost all of your current customers. I think your heart is in the right place in improving the game and the population of the game but to shut it down for a lengthy portion before the expansion would kill it.

Congratualtions OP.  You did exactly what Funcom wanted.  Pay them !!!

Who cares then when you find out there wasn't much new ? You will do it again next time they add something.

This is MMO - Now pay up !

After 223 aoc-bashing posts your friends convince you to try out the game again? hehe... I call your bluff.

I understand the disappointment of trying a game you thought was going to be your next big thing, and it wasn't. But, hey! Spending all that bashing time on a forum where others can check your posting history? It's been 16 months since AoC had a bad launch. Now, It's probably one of the best mmo's out. I understand you have wanted it to fail since, but shit happens. Those who like the game are happy, those who didn't... well, I hope they find something else, or it's back to wow, right?

You seem to have written a few more words into the post than what I would have expected from your obvious troll like subject.

Seriously though. No, shutting down a game that's probably one of the best mmo's out atm...

Crap... I just understood that I fell into the trap of feeding a troll... shutting down AoC. lol.

Then again, I never got to be a part of the bitterness of the failed launch I have read about, but still. From the game I am experiencing now, this thread sounds like the death spasms of a troll.

Hmm lets see... Did you even read the original post? The "bluff" you are calling is a quote from the official forums.

Checking post history work both ways. You seem to have almost twice as many posts as the OP but almost all of them are troll attacks on posters that, like the OP, have negative feelings towards Funcom. Even I (who have definately been negative towards Funcom) have more helpful or factual posts about AoC than you.
You obviously fail (or choose to fail) to understand your own linked reference to a "troll".
(And just for the record: Bram Stoker's "Van Helsing" was hunting vampires, or rather a particular vampire )

Bashing a game or bashing bashers of a game: Both are equally pointless.

"It's probably one of the best mmo's out" == OPINION
"It's probably one of the worst mmo's out" == OPINION

Both opinions are "correct" if that is how the poster feels - But that does not make any of those opinions into fact!

OT:

Shutting down AoC for a period of time: Funcom is relocating and moving most of their operation to Canada. They are currently trying to do a lot of things with relatively few employees and leveraging load on the organization would to some degree make a lot of sense.

Depending on how many key employees they will lose with the move, AoC development will suffer to some degree until the organization is fully relocated and restructured.

IMO: Shutting down AoC would be very dangerous. The current amount of subscribers are at a fairly low level considering the size of the organization and future projects they (the subs) should support. A short shutdown could bring the returnees below a critical level.

One possibility could be that Funcom were completely honest about their current situation and said: "We are currently in the process of restructuring our organization for the future. As a result all development on current games will be handled by reduced teams until the restructuring is complete. Our games will have full support and be fully operational but we are compensating our loyal subscribers with a xx% reduction on subscriptions until ..date.. when our restructuring is completed and all teams are back in full force."

Of course this will never happen. It would conflict with their recent sub fee reductions and telling the truth does not seem to be very high on Funcoms PR agenda.

Anyway - I hope the employees and AoC get through the current turbulence without too many dents.

edit: parentheses...

Why shut AOC down for 3 or 4 months?  would they benefit from it?  No

why not?  because after the 1st month all the people that have to wait for AOC to come back on, they would be taken from other mmos,  i myself  would or may go back to planetside if that was the case, everyone else,  scattered amongst the winds. and would i or anyone else come back in a heartbeat? i wouldnt count on it, aside from the "horrid" pickings of this generation of mmos, competition is still tight.

3 or 4..or 6 or 8 months or even 2 months  it wouldnt even work for AOC,  its just a whinefest waiting to happen.

"AOC is back and more stable than ever!"

"no its not! dont listen, it doesnt work on my uber 5000 dollar computer!"

"ya and they lie and cheat and still money, and and..they  got that E.E. fellow still...and, and,  zero content!    D:  "

" X-fire numbers!  duurr!!!"

No exaggeration,  it dont stop. and will never stop even if AOC is given a multiple month shut down to fix everything.

In Addition

3 to 4 months of downtime would not speed up the matienance of the game esspecially when they do not have the numbers to improve upon it. its even further a mute point when something called  "test live" servers are there to blow everything up and the kitchen sink to help move things along.

test live servers, it is there for a reason.   shut down AOC , again would do jack crap, would not FC in the short or long run, would not help the consumers to tell them to come back later, nor help the people that are providing FC the dough to keep their doors open-- they more than likely would be the ones to throw the biggest of tantrums.

Actually this whole thread was kind of a joke. I don't really want them to shut the game down. I want them to fix the problems, and busted mechanics. That is pretty simple, however the reality is that very soon, server implosions are going to occur and then they will be forced to release the expansion early, or take the game to free to play or merge servers again. Any any event it basically spells doom for the game. It also majorly screws the current players, if they merge servers, or if they go free to play that kinda fucks them too, and as for dumping a product on the market before it is ready, well we don't need a Part 2 to that story.

AOC would probably go  F2P before they try to speed up the expansion. in the meantime, they still have House of Crom and the T3 content to deliver, even though they are still within their timetable to deliver; im not holding my breath if they have to let go of something to work on til next year.

So you are saying that you created this thread to troll, then bumped the troll thread by posting an admission to the fact that it was indeed intended as a troll thread?
Why should you then be taken seriously as you are now a self-admitted troll?

Is asking when the fuck Funcom is going to fix the busted ass sieges after 19 months on the market trolling? Or when I asked about them creating an inclusion system where everybody on the server can get into the siege taking place, because there simply are not enough players left to do 48v48 on most servers, is that trolling?

Or how about when I brought up increasing the bank size?

Or when I brough up establishing real guild master functions like ranks, rights, taxes, and the like, was that trolling or was it only there that I was being credible?

Why dare you, ask me about credibility? Am I the game company that launched a product half done, with a majority of features advertised before launch still not in the fucking game? Am I the one responsible for duping the gaming community, reviewers and players alike? Am I responsible for when they lost our around 200 gold in items and strung us along on emails for weeks declaring that finally we had a take it or leave it offer to settle for 200 wood for our T1 city?  Was I the one who promised drunken brawling, or a bounty hunter system, or delivered the first 6 months of the game without a consequence system? Am I the one whos consequence system has been in the game for almost a year and is universally hated by pve and pvp player alike and doesn't actually provide meaningful consequences?

Am I responsible for 96-97% of the players who at one time played the game, and who no longer do? Was it me who reaped the sales $ of 1.2 million copies, and who today collects subs from only a tiny fraction of that amount of copies of the game i.e. 50-65k subscriptions? Was it me who designed the game to cost thousands of man-harvesting-hours to create the materials for a T3 keep, or was it me who ended up handing one out for free at one time? Was it me who instead of fixing broken mechanics or delivering real and meaningful features, and those features advertised, settled for introducing larger virtual breasts because they could?

No no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no. No sir.

I merely point out that this game is so far off the fucking tracks and the leadership isn't working to correct that. Their answer is to release an expansion because the original game is tainted, damaged goods, damaged by their marketing and the history of the advertising, the hype built up, the product, undelivered.

So when I suggested they shut the game down, I did so as a joke, knowing they won't because they are in this for the money. That is what corporations do, try to make money or write off losses for tax breaks. However in the process they have screwed a lot of customers. If that is too much for you to handle but you can handle but supporting Funcom and Age of Conan, this moronic development team if that is where you are comfortable with your money going, but you are uncomfortable with my making light of the situation to those interested in reading an alternative perspective...

I guess that is too bad for you.

Call me a troll if you want. If it damaged my credibility so be it, I tend to think I have more credibility just asking Funcom questions. More credibility indeed than anybody who has spoken from their company. My asking questions I might add, to which they don't have real answers, or to which they cannot answer because they don't have what a company needs to provide, i.e. a good or service worth what they are charging, anyway these questions are at the heart of what credibility I have and they do not. Simply put, deliver or die Funcom.

Now I'd love to re-sub and join their advocacy program but not until they deliver the product they are/have been advertising and start a growing rather than declining thread. Until they make these mechanics changes and feature implements this game isn't going anywhere but into decline.

I'm ok with that.

TL;DR

I assume nothing of what you wrote had anything to do with the topic of the thread, which you admit to being a troll post?

I stated the thread was a joke. Its not trolling. Nor are the other threads. If you read it as trolling you are entitled to call it horseshit, thats fine.

If they close down the game due to lack of subs that is reality. If they don't that is reality too.

If they change the way the game is subsidized to a F2P model that is essentially shutting down the current implementation and certainly they will not do that with the expansion. It might be a good idea though with AOC because free trial which convert to a sub doesn't seem to be generating a massive resurgence in subscriptions or buzz for the game. If you can't sell a product for free then you have to create a new product and distance it as much as possible from the product you can't sell for free.

Just ask Vince at Shamwow.

From wikipedia:

"In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion" (My italicization)

And this does not fit your OP and thread title how?

Iron Tower is one of the coolest dungeons Ive played in a long time! Not only does it have cool quests inside w/ cool rewards, but the design and bosses are really cool. The Executioner walks around in the dungeon below , and when fighting that boss you are presented w/ many tasks - If you dont complete those in a certian amount of time, the executioner will kill one of your group members. They did a great job w/ this, and the animations. You can be put in a spikey box, you can be kneeling down in a wooden contraption w/ your hands cuffed and your head ready to drop in a basket w/ the Executioner above you w/ his weapon swung high. You can be tortured and streatched. I mean they did an awesome job here with all the custom animations/stances.

Once you go to the higher level, you have a bunch of locked cell doors - these keys which drop from random mobs , open these cells. Each cell can randomly have a boss encounter inside w/ rewards for all to boot! Not only this, but all rewards ive seen in Iron tower have unique looks and design then any other armor in the game to date. They really made a unique approach w/ the loot in Iron Tower.

Now while your fighting these mobs, you get to certian mini boss's that drop ward stones. These ward stones are used later in the guardian to the final boss. You have to use them approiately as a group , and only 5 get these stones! If you dont use them properly in the encounter you are constantly being damged from the Gaurdian's spells that protects the finale boss. (and you will die!)

So not only is all of this awesome, and unique- and a refreshing change from your smash and kill dungeons - it has also built in encounters if you do them differently *or harder, strategically* the reward is greater.  You might get a blue chest, or you might get a raid powered chest which is Purple , and actually better then what is in game right now - if you fight things w/ a more strategic mindset.. you just mind get lucky!

So is Iron tower the same? I think not - you obviously didnt do it, or didnt understand what you were doing in there.. No one would call it the same old copy dungeon - Funcom defniitely gave us a unique experience, with the Iron Tower.

I look forward to killing Thoth Amon and his buddy I released up there..

Kudos to Funcom on that dungeon - its fantastic!

I just wanted to add one more thing --

The weather effects at the very top w/ the finale boss are PHENOMINAL. We need more of that w/ the rest of the world!
