Over the past year and a half, my friend and I have been looking for the best MMORPG out there that is free. We started with Runescape which was top of the list for longest amount of time and migrated throughout different ones. We've played through most of the realistic ones, and a few of the anime and cartoonish ones, and one premium one, being Guild Wars.

Here's a list of what we've played

  • 2 Moons
  • 4Story
  • ACE Online
  • Afterworld
  • Anarchy Online
  • Archlord
  • Atlantica Online
  • Cabal Online
  • Club Penguin (LOL)
  • Dekaron
  • Dragon Fable
  • Dream Of Mirror
  • Dungeon Runners
  • Dungeons & Dragons Online
  • Earth Eternal
  • Entropia Universe
  • Fiesta Online
  • Flyff
  • Guild Wars
  • Guild Wars Factions
  • Guild Wars Nightfall
  • Habbo
  • Jade Dynasty
  • Knight Online
  • Last CHaos
  • Mabinogi
  • MapleStory
  • Metin 2
  • Mythwar Online
  • Perfect World International
  • Ragnarok Online
  • Rappelz
  • Regnum Online
  • Requiem Bloodymare
  • RF Online
  • Roblox
  • Rohan: Blood Feud
  • Runes Of Magic
  • Runescape
  • Second Life
  • Shaiya
  • Silkroad Online
  • Warrior Epic
  • Wizard 101

As far as I've seen, Perfect World, Runes Of Magic, And Runescape have been the best we've played so far. The rest just dont have the same mood. These three as well have some flaws. But no game is perfect xD. Perfect World has amazing graphics but its mostly just a bunch of mobs standing around so theres hardly any good exploring. Runes Of Magic has alot of nice skills and stuff but its alot of grouped up areas and mobs and it lags alot. Runescape is click to walk and has many skills but it doesnt have a sky even -_-. yes i know i'm picky. But I'm wondering is there any RPG out there thats better than any of these? Or should i just pick one of the three and level up hard on them. If you have any games you could list please do. Thanks

DDO is better than all of the others by far, it's the only game on the list with professional quality.

And the only F2P worth playing.

My opinion ofc

Playing: Aion, Uncharted 2, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue
Waiting for: Star Wars: The Old Republic, Mass Effect 2, FF XIII & XIV

I agree with the poster above, DDO is a good F2P title, as is GW, both are made by companies with a P2P background.

I believe of the other F2P titles you've tried that Runes of Magic is the best, even though it is a 'MMORPG Clone' (Glad I didn't say the game that shall not be named?) :)

As for the ones you haven't tried, give Sword of the New World a try.

I would like to say that as I see it DDO is overly complex.  It's a virtual D&D session.  I wanted to play a video game, not D&D in some DM's world.  If I had wanted that I would have gone to the weekly game session (hmmm...  Oh, there's my dice).  Anyway, you have played more games than I have and I keep ending up playing more Guild Wars.  The game it self is simple, but it can get as complex as I want to get on the fly and the graphics are better than most of the games you listed.

If you have not yet played DDO, take some time and give it a shot.  It might fit the bill for you and your friends.  Please, be prepaired for having to deal with a lot of stuff I don't think a player should have to.

DDO is definitely the best F2P title I know of, followed by Runes of Magic.

I wouldn't say DDO is overly complex, it has a ton of skills and stats and what not, if you want to mess with them. If not I belief they will auto adjust according to your class. Otherwise, it is a very fun MMORPG with complex dungeons that have different puzzles and traps. It actually makes you think and figure things out.
