I used to live not too far from Richmond; it's a BAD area and this actually doesn't surprise me too much.

People would get killed walking alone at night there, or mugged, or worse. The African American population in the lower income sections of California is probably among the most dangerous in the country.

This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed.

Yeah I was reading in their local sources how they have a bad gang problem and a very high murder rate. Not a nice place.

So they arrested a 6th with more to come.    Also, one of the people was black, so what is the mother saying....he was only arrested because he was black and did nothing.    Sorry lady, witnesses put your kid there and said he was one that raped the girl and other things(I can imagine).    Anyway, read the story here.

Has anyone taken the time to speak to a police officer and ask what they advise?

I've been in some "sticky" situations in the past & the very first thing you have to do is weigh up the risk to your own life first, dead heroes save nobody.

I find it terrible a few jocks with some actual spine didn't team up & go in 2 to a rapist & take em down, though like a few have pointed out us here don't know the siituation, for all we know these guys have done this before, got away with it even after being reported identified etc, they might have been the local thugs & even touching one of them would bring the threat of the entire rest of the gang coming after you.

Depends also on the collective mindset that pre-existed at the school, they may have all been living in fear of gangs or so & to speak out or in English parlance "grass up" the perpetrators is a fast ticket to getting yourself an early pine box.

The school itself should be held responsible for holding an event & lacking adult supervision, any adults there should have dealt with the situation & should be held accountable of their negligence.

With the sheer volume of cellphone ownership it's crazy someone didn't phone the cops....maybe someone did, & were not taken seriously, in which case the cops should be held accountable too.

This situation highlights more than 1 problem, there was a whole chain of circumstances & failures that led to this poor woman being subjected to her ordeal, and each needs addressing.

Only two things are infinite, the universe & human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former!" - Albert Einstein

Actually a woman did call the police after she overheard some kids, walking by her house, that had come from the dance bragging about the rape and how cool it was.   She lived 2 blocks away and she didn't hear about it until after the fact.    People at the dance did not report it though.

You bring up a valid point.

Based on what others have written (I have not done research on Richmond):  If that area is "bad" with a heavy gang presence, would the kids involved / watching actually feel they had any recourse other than to show approval?  Is it possible that the actual rapists held such a reputation that those finding out about, or observing, the crime felt reporting it would endanger themselves?  I wouldn't be surprised if something similar were the case for most of the children / young adults involved.

Blaming everything possible before questioning the parents? How American! If it's not the video games, it's movies. If it's not the movies, it's uhhhhh something in the water or what they are teaching in the schools?

Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!

Yeah I know, stupid.   So they are trying to pin this on violent video games like the always do.   But the fact remains that increased sale of video games over the last three years and a decrease in juvenile crime seem to be linked!  If this trend continues it should be very easily to show that a correlation exist in video games and a drop in crime and have actually helped decrease the amount of crime being done by juveniles and even adults over all!   Wouldn't that shut up the so called experts.

I don't think it shows that there is a link, it shows that there is no link between sales of violent video games and real world crime.

It has nothing to do with being American or not. This happens everywhere; Germany is even banning very violent games.

That said, research HAS proven that young children are desensitized to violence by playing violent video games, even though many of us gamers would like to hear none of it. However, none of the studies linking gaming and real world crime have been convincing.

Which when dealing with people who would do this to someone, is possible.

Oh I'll tell you what this was. They were probably recording it on cell phones, so her rape will be 1,000,000 fold as freakshows and monsters get ahold of it and pass it around themselves forever. And I think they were friends of one or more of the horde that raped her themselves. The rest of them probably didn't want to "make waves", "rock the boat", for whatever reason that is likely related to social status. Those 'kids' are probably already into sex, even pimping and prostitution.

That's the only explanation.

If it isn't already, my first suspicion of cellphone recordings should be dealt with harshly. As in with either death or one step below it in order to stem a new tidal wave of such crimes. I've seen the potential for it, for years. Have to nip it in the bud.
