The price for freedom is eternal vigilance

10/27/09 4:52:12 AM#26

I have to concur with the OP.

I too was in mmo limbo, not playing anything and while EVE Online is always a backup option ( I enjoyed my time there ), Fallen Earth came at the exactly right time out of nowhere.

Sure I knew of its existence, but after so many recent mmo failures ( AoC, WAR, Darkfall to name a few ), I definatly was not getting my hopes up.

I started playing only recently, nearly a month after release, and I am very glad I did.

So far for me the game is smooth, polished and complex enough. I hear that the performance of the game has improved alot over the 1st month, and I can only say that now, for me, the game runs like a train on a 400€ ( monitor and peripherals not included ) computer.

The scenery may feel a bit bland at times, but after tweaking the graphics ( like turning off post FX and putting everything else on high ) it sure is good enough for me.

I have alot of fun with the first person shooter style and the special abilities on top of that, it allows for some player skill to be involved.

I also agree with most of the future plans that Fallen Earth / Icarus has, like for example player housing. It is clear to see there is a soild base with alot of future potential, a hardworking developer and good support.

I haven't had nearly enough time to play as I would like to tho, as I am pretty busy in RL, notheless, I look forward to the times I can play.

The only negative about this game for me personally is that they plan to charge for expansions, while they learned the other lessons from EVE very well ( single server, start small and expand, more freedom than on conventional mmo's, good crafting system, ... ), they may fail with this one. For me it is not about the money, but about the inclusiveness and horizontal expansion that free but mandatory expansions bring ( ie EVE Online ). Payed expansions never were a good thing to mmo's, history has shown this many times.

Either way, payed expansions in itself is certainly not a gamebreaker for me.

This was a good thread to read. :) Apart from the 2nd or 3rd post I saw no hate, only a solid excitement for this game.

I've just been reading the thread in Aion about the expected subscription drop after the first month. I dare say FE will have a drop too, and really I can see that FE is not for everyone even if I personally am a fan. It will be interesting though to see what the drop is and my guess is that it wont be too severe... FE quite consciously had a rather quiet launch and is building up.

The only thing that annoys me about this game is how long it takes to craft and gather all the resources without having to go to the market. Also it is a lvl based game still and I am kinda sick and tired of lvl based games. Either than that I am enjoying it, I like the size and the learning curve (which is HUGE!) of the game.

Seriously guys, this is probably the best experience I've had with an MMORPG since WoW release.

I loved UO, EQ, SWG, DAoC, LOTRO, EQ2, Eve and WoW. I had great times playing all of them, and I have been looking for the same feeling I had when playing and progressing through them.

I tried to love AoC, Warhammer, Matrix, CoX, Champions Online, Vanguard, or even Aion. I just couldn't. At the end of the free 30 days, I realized that those games had no soul. Yeah, maybe cool animations, cool graphics, or cool licensce. But just boring.

And now I'm loving Fallen Earth. Guys, I'm not telling you to buy the game. Get a trial asap and try it out. If you are one of those who are looking for a new, good and deep MMO experience, Fallen Earth may be your game. It's definetly mine :)

and how much are they paying you to post this??? If any game "doesn't have a soul" it is Fallen Earth....  Play it for a month and see how many times you fall asleep...

And how much did you get paid to post that? And how much did Al Gore get paid to develop the internet? And how much did it cost them to fake the moon landing? And how much did the CIA have to pay Elvis to shoot JFK? And how much did the space aliens pay Sigourney Weaver to give birth to thieir baby? Seriously does anyone else think the wackaloons are running wild on the the internets? People like what they like and tend to say so. You not liking it doesn't make them wrong, or evil, or shills for a marketing conspiracy.

And I want to know how much the Aliens are paying you to lure us into a false sense of security about the motivations of Al Gore?

Echo of my own thoughts, really :) Slightly different list of games which disappointed me but the same overall idea. In sector two now at level 24 and the goodness hasn't let off yet.

Yeah, I'm enjoying it to, and like the OP I was pretty much done with MMOs.

Really, the last MMO that I thought was great and a true adventure was DAOC, and before that was AC. Since then I've been dissapointed game after game with brief stays in SWG, WoW, and WaR.

It feels alot like AC to me on how there no classes but yet skills that you can mix and match like you want. I love the AC openness as well, I remember sitting down with a buddy and running from one end of AC to the other and finding caves and dungeons and exploring them along the way. That was such great fun and completely free.

That's the feel I get from FE, freedom. I do not get the feeling that I'm being lead down a certain path upon which I have absolutely no choice on really anything.

So yeah, I'm enjoying it to. Now the question is do I go ahead and purchase the game or do I purchase Dragon Age this month, which I've been looking forward to for ages now.

Power corrupts and absolute power is kinda neat.

I remember my first time logging in to EQ. Everything was new, there was so much to do and see and explore. After a year of playing a necro and finally starting an alt, it still didn't get old. It had a new feeling depending on what class you played. I'm still in the early days of the trial, but i feel the same way about FE as i did when i first started EQ. I don't feel the rush to lvl like other MMOs i've played. The quests are story driven, yet simple. I was looking to make some money to buy more ammo cause i didn't try crafting yet. I harvested a few nodes after buying my Copper book and was like "wait....did i just get exp for harvesting?" I don't need to kill mobs to lvl. Its not even really about the exp for me, its about earning the AP inorder to build my character the way i want him to be built. At lvl 3 i killed a lvl 8 mob, it wasnt easy and i bout died. But i did it, mostly because of how many points i put into my stats and skills. Granted i wont be doing that again lol but i could do it.  Not because of the class i picked, but because of how i built my character. Now thats how an MMO should be made, not a cookie cutter class with a room full of accountants behind them doing math on EXP/DMG ratios for classes lol. If i want to make a toon that can use a rifle really well, i can, but i will sacrifice other areas of the game to do it,ie: blut weapons or pistols or even a mutation based toon. Just my opinion, but its a very nice game and once it gets some polish on it, it will be even better. sure it has its problems, but name an MMO that doesn't? Just name one MMO that you've had ZERO game bugs with? Ok then, now that its out of the way, hand me my frigin crossbow......i got some mutated prarie chickens to harvest!!!
