I haven't logged in for about a week due to lack of time but when I tried on Sunday I was stuck at character selection screen for 5 mins then decided to give up as it was obvious the 'Sunday Blues' were in effect. It's a great game and I really enjoy playing I just hope they can correct the server issues. I have to admit I did expect server lag this weekend with the trial. |

Personally I'm interested in trying this game and if I have fun I would gladly pay the subscription fee. However I do not have an interest in paying the box price, nor do I for any MMO anymore. They are hardly ever worth it and I can go play more expansive, less buggy MMOs for just a sub price.
However I lose my interest on the free trial if everyone has been playing long enough to have maxed characters and everyone is in the high zones. So if they do decide to wait for a year or longer, as you suggested, to offer a free trial, then I highly doubt I would even try the game out at that point and would set my sights on all the games that have come out in that year.
Companies tend to wait too long to get the free trial out, because they want to get every sale dollar they can. However they shut out a huge portion of possible players. I'm far from the only person who is not interested in the box price, and I know I'm not the only one to lose interest in the free trial if the game has been out for a long time by the time it is offered.
Companies need to offer in game items and early access( a real amount of time like a month or so) for preordering, and then just offer a two week trial and the sub price once the game has launched. I'd be interested in the data showing the preorder sales numbers of most MMOs to launch in the past year compared with the box sales after release up until the free trial was offered. I would bet that the free trial and first week open sales are exponentially larger then the rest of the sales up to the free trial phase. And all that time could be used to get people into the game while it is new and interesting and get the sub numbers higher. |

Mine downloaded in 2 hours. No, the updater is fine, your comp however is not (or your ability to actually use a computer rather, you know, troubleshooting problems and all...). Your own ignorance is not the fault of the updater or company, that rests solely upon your own shoulders. Stop trying to make the game appear as something it isn't, when it is easily the best mmo released within the past two years. |

I dont get the complaints of the updates taking days to complete. I installed on Friday, started the patching, went out shopping with the old lady for 3 or so hrs, came back, watched a movie and was ready to play. I think it took a total of 5 hrs for me to fully patch. Also, I dont the screams about it was too early for a free trial. This is honestly the perfect time for it. The game is new, there is still a good buzz. Let people try the game and then buy it. It creates more loyalty to a small indie dev imo. I think that is the biggest error Darkfall made, not giving a short free trial. You are not a big name dev, you need to tempt me into checking out your game. |

I installed the game on two different systems over the weekend. There are some real problems with the patcher.
Vista-Box
Overall it was one of the worst patcher experiences I have had for a MMOG. I have no idea why they didn't rebuild a new install with all the content included. Especially considering the influx of trial players.

I beta tested FE for a bit near the end. Loved the atmosphere, but was never able to get time to test much. Some of the gripes listed in this thread, I had issues with. FPS dropped really low any town I went to, Lag was real bad at time (as expected in beta IMO), and the real game seemed so much different than the tutorial. I never got the time to get used to not kickin butt like in the tutorial is all...
I got a trial key and will see what I missed.

Playing the trial on an old Dell 8300 with dual 3.0ghz p4, 1.5gigs of RAM and a nvidia 6200 256mb vid card. Lowest settings, which arn't that bad yet its playable even in towns. Eat that shit. |

Took me about 5 hours to download. Not the best downloader - I've seen libtorrent based downloaders do it 3x faster (5 gigs) and consistently. "Installing" took half hour. I don't know what it needed to install, because from what I can see FE doesn't use package files (put all the data in pseudo file system) - just copy & paste. Which I'm sure is going to take a toll on a lot of people's harddrives. Sigh.. even Blizzard's been doing package files for 15 years. It's very common, and should be standardized.
Other than that, and a few glitches, it's been pretty easy. |
