Usually, when a game get some news at mmorpg.com, they all get hyped instantally, but darkfall didnt even get hyped because of a news release. I mean, if the only stuff that attracted the mass was the fact that a devs did their 1st spot light at their own website, i just dont get it. Aion was because the game had been release and open beta too. Now, look at it lol. DF dont even get a lot of news and eve if it had been a long time that we didnt heard about DF new stuff, he can still get the 1st position.

Is Tasos hacking the website or are we that popular 4 real?

People are drawn to drama and controversy.  The DFO boards seem to attract more of that than any of the other forums.  There is your number 1 and number 2 spot for you.

Its based on player activity, and can be fairly easily altered for your preference.

The "Top Game" here doesnt really mean much.

The popularity of a game on mmorpg.com as I understand it is based off forum posts/hits, and if that is the case as usual this is actually more of an indication of a troubled game more than a "popular" game.  WOW has never ranked high and we know that by numbers alone they should be ten times more popular than any game but they never are, EVE online is never a very popular title nor is LOTRO these games only come up here when they have something going on (expansion) or when the year end awards appear.  For as long as I can remember now AOC and DF have been vying for the top spot on this board so that should give you an indication.

And where did you pulled your lovely numbers from?
Let me guess.......................

Darkfall servers have the same capacity as EvE (around 100K), they are called "cloud" servers which means that many servers act as one, and DF has 2 of them.
Not saying that Darkfall has 200K, but just because it has only 2 servers doesn't mean that it has 10K players............they are not like WoW or Aion servers.

Please show a link from someone from Aventurine claiming the number you put as fact above.

The only official numbers that Aventurine has ever claimed is that their servers can handle around 10k concurrent users.  There has been no official claim... (at least not one that is less than 5+ years old) of what the total user account size is of each server.

I'd be interested in seeing your source on this information.

Here are the sources for my information:

"The world can hold over 10 thousand concurrent users."

www.curse.com/articles/darkfall-en-news/372269.aspx

"Over 10 thousand concurrent players per game world. "

www.darkfallonline.com/index.html

(Granted, those links are assuming the Devs are in fact giving accurate information).

Now sure, we could all guess what the total number of accounts each server is capable of; but let's not fool ourselves... it's still just a guess.

Just thought it a bit disingenuous for you to be chastising the poster you quoted for pulling numbers out of thin air... then you proceeded to do the same thing.

Actually the number of accounts a server is capable of is only limited storage capacity. An account takes NO system resources other then basic data storage.

Hell dBase II could have held 65K accounts back in the early 80's. That is not even close to what STE2000 was talking out his ass about.

DnF doesn't run on any cloud servers, it rnus on a couple of blade servers that belong to a company that was started by a former Enron official. Nothing groundbreaking, just the same old server farm layout that 99.9999999% of online games run on. Hell DnL ran on a couple of blade servers back when.

Don't go tooting your horn failbots, you have nothing to show off to the world of MMORPG's.

Going through your post history is quite the joke. You post pretty much just in the Darkfall forums and occasionally in the MO forum. Even then you can't resist bringing up Darkfall. This is beyond sad dude.

Your looking more and more like a failbot Phranky boy. You seem to be the epitome of failbot. Maybe find a new word to throw around. Start lookin for a new mmo too, thats why most of us are here.

The part I high-lighted in red I do agree with "technically".

However...

An MMO must provide for the eventuality that players that create an account on a particular server expect to play on it at a time of their choosing.  Players tend to have very little patience long-term for endless queues.

This means that there is in fact a "limit" of sorts to the number of accounts that a particular server can handle.

It would do an MMO little good to allow 200k accounts to be created on a server if the server could only handle 10k at a time and of those 200k accounts 40k were wanting to play at the same time.

See with DarkFall we have 2 unknowns working against us.

First unknown is the total number of accounts Aventurine will allow on a particular server.

Second unknown is the total number of accounts that are trying to login and play at the same time.

The only known number (going by what Aventurine Devs. have told us) is the servers are supposed to be able to handle 10k concurrent users.

Since they only have 2 servers we have an upper end for the number of players that can be playing at one time.  The total number of accounts on those 2 servers though is impossible to know without knowing the maximum number that Aventurine is comfortable with allowing on a particular server before they consider it "full".

Some have suggested that 10% is a reliable number.  For some MMOs that may indeed be the case.  For DarkFall I don't know if that percentage works or not.

It has to do with the rabid natures of the fans and haters not the quality or actual popularity of the game. It's comparable to winning first prize at a pig party. May as well be Darkfall as anything else.

I beleive its some bot, that keeps hitting darkfall forum or images to get a higher score. The statistics on MMORPG appear to be easy to manipulate. No way Darkfall is more popular than Aion at the moment. Also it hat dissapeard off the list when suddenly it started to receive 3-4 times more hits than other games.

Another thing is that the number of threads in this forum hasnt grown much lately

All in all - someone is manipulating the figures in order to make Darkfall appear more popular than it is.

We base this off unique IPs to hit a games "section" on the site.  This could be faked I suppose if someone setup a bot behind a proxy server to hit our site with hits from a pile of fake IP addresses.

I will bring this up amongst the team - perhaps we could come up with a more effective way to determine which games are popular at the moment (like only counting logged in users, etc).

All this being said, this could very well be legit as well, for example, if we have a Darkfall article that is linked up heavily across the web then every hit to that article would boost the popularity for the game, regardless of forum postings, etc.

DF is a much better game now. This next content patch (Xpac) will push DF even further toward being a really good game.

While it sadens me that DF can't be one server like Eve I still think it will grow over the next few years and be atleast half as populated as Eve-online is now.

Why would I play a pathetic themepark MMO when I could enjoy a masterpiece like Mass Effect, Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Dragon Age?

Yeah, I think you might be on the right track.

It does indeed seem fishy that at this time of the morning (today) the top 5 are:

DarkFall : 7,911

Aion: 3,336

Fallen Earth: 2,161

AOC: 946

WAR: 914

DarkFall is usually in the second tier of hits with AOC, WAR, LoTRO, WoW, and EvE.  The top 2 games are usually what ever is the most recently released MMOs at the moment.

For DarkFall to have more than twice as many hits as the next closest (and most recent release) MMO does seem a bit "faked".

Hopefully it is some external entity causing the anomaly and not someone from within MMORPG.COM itself.

These numbers do indeed look a bit fishy. But it's not surprising that it's listed at #1. This DF forum has always been very popular/active.

There is some irony that amuses me if  posts being added to a forum claiming it has to be something "fishy" about activity in that said forum.

Yeah, it's been popular... but not #1 popular for quite some time now.

As I said in the previous post, it is usually in the second tier of MMOs games when it comes to it's popularity.  Back when DarkFall was at it's highest level of popularity (i.e. 50-100 new posts every day) it still only occasionally cracked #1.

Now there are only a handful of new posts and it's more than twice as popular as the next closest?

It would appear that the Admin here at MMORPG.COM are indeed perplexed by it as well since they responded in this thread.  I'm sure they will get to the bottom of it eventually.

Hopefully it will be something they feel can be shared with the community, as I for one would be interested in knowing the cause.

Yup.

You do realize though that once you visit the forum that your "hit" no longer counts... right?

Sure, the added posts will put this thread up in the recent threads frame.   But, as I said, that hasn't changed in 6 months.  I've been doing the same thing since DarkFall was in Beta.  Your welcome.

Suddenly (last week or so), DarkFall is getting 5-10 times as many hits as it was previously.  Surely, even you can admit Darth that does seem a bit odd.

It's not like MMORPG.COM is considered the bastion of DarkFall from it's supporters... even from your own mouth... Darth.

This considerable uptick MIGHT be real if the "expansion" had just been just been released.  On the contrary, they just announced a 2 week (or longer) delay.  That usually doesn't spell a 5-10 times increase.

Edit: On the plus side, I am glad to see that irony at least amuses you Darth.  There is still hope afterall.

It was at 7,911 @ 7: 47 CDT

It is now at 9,933  @ 8:32 CDT

So in less than 45 minutes it's had another 2k+ unique hits?  Heh... I think that pretty well cinches it.

It indeed does. But not exactly the "top position" you had in mind.

Really, people must be completely brainwashed to think this kind of activity is normal.
