So those are TWO OFFICIAL sources (one even came from the official transcript from an audited financial report of Activison/Blizzard covering the 1st Q of 2009 !).

So WOW had 11.6 M subs worldwide June 2009 before it became free to play in the summer in China. Since a few weeks it is back as a paid MMORPG in the mainland. So further world wide PAID sub numbers were impossible to give due to this 2 months hic up in China which covered the last 2 Fin Q's.

:))) You should thank me for the official transcipt :)))

Well wow isn't dieing, atleast not on my server

I understand that it is hard to get groups for older dungeon and raid stuff, but that's why we will have cross server grouping soon in 3.3.

And for the rest, this is my 5the year of wow and I haven't had this problem, I play on darksorrow EU a high populated server.

Dalaran and orgrimmar are packed with players, and I need like 5 minutes to get a group to every instance (lvl80) I want.

So... is wow dieing? NO

Talking about the situation in my country: WoW is not dying...on all but 2-3 servers it is dead for month. This years' summer was the final nail in the coffin, people left for other things than gaming and didn't came back to WoW after.

The server i played on has about zero alliance left. You barely see some of them in Dalaran, while all SW and IF are empty 24/7. The server was one of the last servers Bizzard opened and had a bad horde:alliance ratio from the beginning on. The few established alliance guilds all transfered off by now and folks in different realmpools are screaming for server-merges left and right.

This may not kill WoW in general, but it adds up to the bigger picture. WoW IS dying.

It might not be dying, but it is certainly losing standing power among long time players.

Myself and a total of sixteen of my WoW guild members have all left for Fallen Earth over the course of the last two weeks. Out of our merry band of seventeen, fifteen of us have cancelled our WoW subscriptions with no intention of returning.

There is nothing fun about mindless heroic runs that are not heroic feeling at all, raids that can be pugged, or watching gear get handed out like candy for very little effort.

The game has been reduced to a amusement park ride for dribbling halfwits, anyone can gear up completely within a week of hitting 80, with the most minimal effort/time investment. Its beyond ridiculous what this game has become, a shadow of what it once was, spiraling further downward with every patch.

And no, I'm not some undergeared "scrub" who gets gear checked at every turn and came here to cry:

http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Darrowmere&n=Buknastey

My gear and achievements speak for themselves. The game has simply become far too simplistic, and at every fork in the road even more of that original charm is lost.

Sad, but true.

Not in the least. Simply because some of the Chinese government ministries are fighting among themselves AGAIN... Doesn't translate to WoW "dying".  Blizzard already has another Chinese rep(Netease). Its just a matter of paying off the proper officials. Just as it is in any country.  WoW is going to be around for a long, long time.

Learn how to spell "Dying" first, then people may take you seriously. :P But yah I do agree WoW is dying, it won't be long before they make their last desperate attempts to save it before they finally decide to release WoW 2.

Most of the stuff people want to do (pvp and raids) is post level 50

So Blizzard is making it easier for people to get up that high.

They have already proven that most of their energy is going to be spent on higher level pursuits

So let people get there and do them

Many of the people that WoW attracts don't want to wait so Blizzard is tailoring the game to their playerbase

Good move I think

And its also nice they are redoing the low level old world in cataclysm

Which freshens up the game a bit

With there being not many good games to play WoW will stay king of the heap until SWTOR or something else as possibly hard hitting

You say it's too simplistic but you have far less than half of the raiding achievments.  When you have most of them,  you can come back and say the game's too easy imo.

If you become obsessed with something you're chasing, there's a good chance you'll forget why you're chasing it.

That 16 of you lot left, doesnt mean squat. There's still plenty of people playing, including long-time players. I myself stopped about.....5 months ago? The server I was on was still going strong (Stronger than ever I might add).

Not to mention you are referring to characters which you can't prove are actually yours. Not that anyone should care what type of gear you have, especially when it comes to making a point. "Oooohh, he has a decked-out 80, he must speak the truth then!". xD.

These threads are... "fun". I mean do people seriously think that if they and their entire server quit WoW it will hurt Blizzard or will cause WoW to "die"?

If you want anecdotal evidence of WoW's popularity INCREASING - here it is. At an internet cafe I go to there were a total of 2 people playing WoW a year ago (me included). Now? More than half of the total of 100 machines are running WoW at prime time, with people leveling new chars, creating "in-house" guilds, pvping, running old and new content and generally enjoying themselves. Maybe 3 PCs are running Aion, and 2-3 Lineage 2. A few can sometimes be seen running run-of-the-mill Asian MMOS. This is how WoW's popularity has grown in my town in 1 year. If 1-2 years ago I could maybe find 2-5 people at my University that played MMOs, now there is even a "fan" club for WoW with more than 200 members. While I think starting "fan clubs" is going a bit too far, this anecdotal evidence is enough to disprove the various doomsayers and trolls that keep saying "WoW is dying".

Nothing will "kill" it. Not this year, not the next expansion, not in 5-8 years. At one point the numbers may diminish but it will not die for lack of players. By the time the plug is pulled most of us playing WoW now will have moved on to other games and a new generation will be playing it.

Finally - is WoW easy? Sure, it's reasonable easy. It's made to be easy. People need to have fun and to have fun now not in 3 months when they manage to finish Naxx and advance to the next, already obsolete raiding tier. Blizzard is not going for a hardcore game, not since Vanilla WoW which to be honest was boring. Naxx in Vanilla was a buggy mess and classes and class diversity was bland. Obviously making the game more accessible has worked well for Blizzard as the subscription numbers have increased a lot since TBC and WotLK. That alone should tell you that this approach of making content accessible to all (and keeping the hard modes for the hard cores - hard being subjective to the player) is working in their favor no matter what frustrated elitist may think.

That's funny because google news is exactly where I found the article. I typed in World of Warcraft clicked on news, and went in about 3 or 4 pages and there it was.

You know much more than Blizzard or the media so I guess we should all believe what you say. WOW! you've just changed my mind because YOU don't think it's accurate LMFAO! You may be able to rely on guesses for proof but the rest of the world can't get away with that. Why don't you try and give me a more recent link that states the opposite of what I've just posted?

Another unbeliever, how you dare to talk like that. WoW is immortal and Almighty Blizzard wanted it that way :)

Me thinks you will see an infestation of goblins and worgens in Kalimdor, Eastern Kingdoms and beyond. Also the people that were itching for a gnome priest or a human hunter will be witness of a miracle. Only Almighty Blizzard can! Now I dont know what will happen after 2012. I heard there were plans for a Murloc infestation which finally wipe out the lands, then when time comes for another expansion you will start playing as a mundane creature such as a rat or crab. It would be like a Spore MMO. Just believe and Almighty Blizzard will give you the miracle.

No, i played Aion in the week of the headstart and brought back my (still sealed) copy to the store on release day. I played WoW for about 4yrs and the majority of that time i spent hardcore raiding or pvp'in, probably way more intense and long before you. I don't hate WoW, just got tired of it... may happen after such a long time. I've got to admit that i don't like many of Blizzard's moves in the past years, especially in terms of class balance. But this is more a matter personal taste and again, this happens when you play hardcore for years. You don't always agree to everything Blizzard pulls off.

However, it is not "hate" as you fanboys call it. In fact, a "hater" is what you are. You hate everything not WoW and if you allow me a personal sidenote, telling by your attitude on these forums you are a person to pity. No offense though, this is just meant as a neutral observation and not as a hit below the belt.

Not everyone who raises some critic is a hater of WoW, as the game definately has it's bunch of flaws. Not everyone who says some this or that about WoW is an Aion lover. Somewhere on these forums i read that you are 48yrs, maybe 49 by now. If so, you should learn that there is not only black or white when it comes to opinions. Although this is next to impossible to explain to someone who himself is only able to think in black and white, like ie you.

That doesn't change the fact that my server is dead for a while. Newsflash: not every server is still as packed as 2-3yrs ago, some of the later server never were....but i'm shure you'll come up with some links to meaningless blogs scattered alloever the internet trying to deny that.

To be honest, there are alot of servers that have issues (see Chogall). Because players can transfer to other servers with better ratios / raids (Aggramar / Mal ganis), they do transfer. However, to say that the game is dieing when alot of those transferring lead other servers to huge queues is not correct.

Now, it may not seem like it to you but the WoW population has remained pretty stable world wide.

Interestingly there has nt been any news on sub numbers since December 2008 . So my guess is that theres been a drop and certainly not an increase . If the news was good there Blizzard would be trumpeting it from the rooftops and they are silent on the subject .

Why don't you try and give me a more recent link that states the opposite of what I've just posted?

i just typed world of warcraft subscriptions again and i find one story from big news http://www.bignews.biz/?id=819589&keys=world-of-warcraft-news i carry on for 30 pages and find nothing else from any other website including this one which is pretty reputable .  its quite easy for any one who doubts who is right and realises if WoW had those subs now it would be on more than one website to check . just go to google and look for yourself .

one websites news does nt make it a fact . if that was true we d be being invaded by lizard men from the center of the earth now

i ll trust it if mmorpg.com or the official wow websites report it .
