When the game isn't crashing on me and locking up my computer, it's enjoyable. I like the openness, atmosphere, etc. The character animations are bit robotic, but it's not a game-killer for me.

The constant crashing is though. I've searched through the FE forums and changed settings in my nVidia control panel like they suggested. I've tried editing the boot.ini file, but that makes the computer lock up within a few seconds instead of 15-20 minutes.

I don't know what else to do to make the game more stable. I'm running 32bit XP SP3 with an nVidia 9600 GT 256. I've got 4GB of DDR3 RAM, but XP only sees 2.72 of that.

The game seems to run fine for a while. I'm getting 80 fps out in the wilderness and 25-30 in town. No textures or models disappear before the crash. No stuttering. The fans aren't getting louder. It just stops and locks up the computer. I can't alt-tab or ctl-alt-del. Only a restart works. Memory leak maybe?

It could be your graphics card either overheating or something simillar.

I'm saying this because I had the same experience with 8600 GT and 8800 GT.

This was happening with both FE and Aion.

I upgraded to GTX 275 recently and I dont have any kind of technical problem anymore, nvidia panel configured according to the forum advices, Vista 32, 4GB Ram etc, average system really.

I think the older video cards cant handle new MMOs so early after launch anymore because games are not optimizied like they should be so early, it usually happens few months after launch.

I'm not a big tech guy or anything but I am leaning towards it being something on your end, as I have never crashed yet.  I am using an ati hd 4850 so I wonder if it could be a nvidia issue.  I've heard some nvidia users have had some problems.

One thing I have noticed just in last few days is a drop in my fps (sigh).  The population is really increasing.  There are people everywhere, which is great.  But I hope they can optimize some more so I can gain back my fps.  The game is still playable, but big towns like Embry Crossroads and Oilville decrease to single digits.  I hope they can do something to make the game run better because it will be awhle before I can buy a new computer.

I was fine until the Hardware cursor patch .. the game runs fine but as soon as I click on a Npc quest giver the game crashes, I've tried everything I can think of but no luck, I'm getting really pissed off now because I've just paid for my second month and already I've lost two days play.

Also no response from support and in game the GM's were not very helpful I'm afraid. Evreything was fine before the last small patch so I'm guessing others are having similar problems but I hav'nt been able to find anyone with the same problems as me yet.

So I'm getting more worried as each day is passing because I'm addicted and really want to play but if they dont fix it I'm going to probably have to cancel my account for the time being anyway.  I'm already paying for nothing so I cant afford to carry on much longer.  :(

Just to add so far I've had more help and suggestions from mmorpg members than I've had from the official forums ..... actually zero help from official forums .. so thanks to everyone here :)

Got rarely crashes. It depends on my graphics settings. If I run into a busy town like oilville during the rush hour with all graphics set to max, the game is likely to crash.

As such I reduced some settings (changing terrain quality to medium, server object distance is now lower too), and I get maybe one crash every 8 hours of gameplay or so, which is bearable. I'd prefer a fix right now, but I guess I'll have to wait a bit for that.

How on earth are people having problems with FE,i played it and there was no hitches, nothing,i also got the best frame rates i have EVER got playing any online game.

DId something happen after i quit playing?I kind of heard there was some patches and soon after i started to see many people posting with problems?

To me it sounds like driver issues, games can run with problem drivers, but it is only a matter of time before it locks up or crashes.I liked the way UT99 did their game, they had at the start up the ability to start the game under a fail safe mode, then you could add in each area so you could locate the problem.By each area i mean add in the sound, then if nothing wrong add in the hardware modes rather than software or vice versa.

You could try to get a free driver update program. They are never free but it would at least show you you if your drivers are outdated. The programs never update them properly for you and usually you have to pay a fee just to use it,but like i said, they will at least show you what drivers you need.

Example Driver Robot.

I checked my drivers and they're all up to date except for the mouse.

I don't think it's on my end. This computer has been able to run every game I've tried so far including VG which is known to be rough on comps and need tweaking. I'm thinking it's probably a combination of the free trial in-flood of people and a memory leak in the client.

Almost certainly drivers, try a driver roll back, sometimes the new drivers are worse than the old one if just released. I would not try Windows 7, get the problem sorted before you change OS.

Just to update, I am now up toward Chris Pass and my fps has gone back to normal.  I've got 50 to 70 fps in the wild, sometimes for some reason it will jump up to 100 or so.  In the city I am getting about 30 fps.  There are still quite a few people running around these areas, but not nearly as many as Embry or Oilville.

Oh, and I did lower my textures to low across the board, so I'm sure that helped too.  I better start practicing my 'sad' face for the wife if I want a new computer any time soon, hehehe.

Agreed they did something to the launcher,  its causing me not to be able to launch the game at this point.

Yeah, we made the decision to be the heck out of the Oilville and below area before the headstart period was over. Had a feeling that the game would attract a significant amount of curious people after launch and Embry and Oilville being what they are with lots of people in the area, it'd be best not to be around there.

Those areas have gotten way better, mind you, but still have more room to improvement. The further north I've gotten, the better performance.

I don't think this is my GPU overheating. I tried alt-tabbing out of the game on regular intervals to listen for the GPU fans. They slow down almost immediately when I leave FE and take a while to spin back up after I get back in. The fans would stay on longer when I did the same thing with VG.

As usual though, the game locked the comp up on me after about 15 minutes. I really want to try this game out, but can't give it a fair shake like this. So frustrating...

I'd guess that you got a bad download, then. May need to download it again. If it was a generic "client" issue then we'd all be experiencing it, right? And as we aren't, I'd guess that it's your specific d/l of the client that was causing an issue. Not that this helps but I played for 5 hours straight today, no lag, no crashes, no issues at all (well, besides getting stomped by a Master level Shard zombie).

Either way, hope things work out for you.

Thats not a game issue, I can tell its its a driver or hardware failure. Could be anything from your GFX Card or Anti Virus.

1. over heating ( which as per above could be caused by dust build up or the heat sink not making correct contact with the processor )

2. the power supply does not supply enough power / wattage - have you upgraded any hardware recently before this started happening ?

3. Bad memory ie RAM or possibly hard drive as per above.

Something I would try, if you haven't already, is to run the game in windowed mode.  For starters it aids FPS as any GM will tell you, and it minimized crashes and lock-ups for those that experience it.  It also still shows as full screen eventhough the setting is windowed mode.

Like a few others said, it might be a hardware issue. I had similar problems with other games and I figured out it was my vid card over heating. Some video card manufacturers set the card's cooling fan speed to only 35-39%. I reccomend trying looking into a little application called EVGA Precision. It monitors your cards temp and allows you to manually set the fan speed. Usually 70-75% is ideal to keep the card below 60 degrees (celsius).

Here is the site to get it and I hope it helps

It didn't work on my computer at all, but it only just scraped the minimum requirements. Though I am very guted I won't get to play the game antill I can afford a better rig, was very apreciative of the trial as a chance to test it out rather than spend my hard earned cash on a full copy of the game and not know if it would work or not.

Would you mind telling us your specs, just for reference?

Edit: im also going to try to run it on a low end machine , and a higher end machine so i can post a personal review later.

I think it's my graphics card, which is an Radeon xpress 200m with omega drivers, even though I knew intergrated laptop cards were not suported it does have 256mb ram and had read on the FE forums that a few people could play it with there laptops with similar powerd cards, so thought it was worth a shot. Have intel dual core 1.8 and 2gigs of ram. Feel a bit selfish 4 taking a trial key on a hope but have wanted to play this game since I first heard of it beeing developed :)

Don't feel bad. This is the exact type of info people need to judge the specs for the game. Thanks for the info, i hope to have a 4 system type review very soon.

Thanks again

1. Might be overheating, but I haven't had overheating issues with any other game I've tried.

2. No hardware upgrades recently.

3. The RAM is all good. When I'm not in XP (OSX instead), all 4GB are used.

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys. Much appreciated! I'm going to keep hammering away at this until I figure it out.
