I'm looking for an MMORPG (P2P or F2P) that has a good/fun to play Assassin/Rogue/Thief.

Games I've played and aren't interested in:

  • Grand Chase
  • World of Warcraft
  • Cabal Online
  • Dragonica
  • Lost Saga
  • Runescape
  • Maple Story
  • Warhammer Online Age of Reckoning
  • Rakion
  • 12sky (and 2)
  • Risk Your Life
  • Dungeon Fighter Online
  • Heroes of Newerth

I prefer PVP, but it's not required, as long as the PVE is FUN.

Grinding, while it isn't preferred, is OK.

..I think that's about it.   I've been looking all over the place but can't find a decent game anymore.

agreed, DDO (Dungeons & Dragons Online) is a pretty good choice if youre not too concerned about pvp, and its also F2P now. unique combat system, more of a twitch / hack n slash style, somehwat similar to Chronicles of Spellborn vs most other MMOS

Im currently hooked on Everquest 2, theyre doing free trials, so would be worth checking out for you. as far as "rogue" type classes go, they have 3 different branches of the assassin archetype with different specialties, 1 having some better aoe & cc capability, 1 being pretty much pure single target dps, and 1 being mainly focused on CC and debuffs/stuns/poisons. love playing all 3 of them

Another good F2p is Runes of Magic, if you dont mind playing a WoW clone, though it does have a pretty cool dual class system making it a bit more like FFXI in that aspect. cool thing is if you like rogues, you can have it as the main class and then a 2ndary class to help back it up however you want, another dps class like scout for pure killing power; priest for self heals, regen, barriers; mage for killing power & cc; tank for survivability and a bit of cc.

If you want to be a real rogue, try Darkfall.  You can murder people and steal their stuff, set up trade traps, hunt down your emenies' crafters and then sell their things back to them ... actual rogue things.  Of course, being a villian does not earn you many friends, and people will merrily hunt you down for being such a dastardly piece of work, but ... it adds spice to the game if it's done with style and panache.

Darkfall is not for the faint hearted, but if your idea of piracy is sailing up to a ship, fighting your way onboard and slaying the crew to take the ship, well, ... it's totally worth a look.   Be warned though, I really do mean it about not for the feint hearted -t he first few days can be really brutal.

And on a completely different aspect, it has one of the most beautiful hand crafted environments of any MMO I have ever seen.  The game needs a lot of polish (don't even get me started on the animations), but it's addictively fun, and your actions have real consequences - for good or evil.

How do you want to play your assassin/rogue/theif? What is your definition of "fun"? Group, or solo play? 1vs1 PVP, team PVP, epic scale PVP? Have you considered Guild Wars also?

Regarding Runes of Magic, I have heard that the game is dependant on item mall stuff later on to be useful at all. Is that true?

To be competitive, ye you'll need it but if you play really casual you won't.
