That's what a friend and I are looking for. Small monthly payments is also an option, about $5 or so.

Torchlight, releasing October 27th. Google it, it's pretty much Diablo 2 in a different skin, it looks fun.

 Hey Nate,

As an aside, I've seen a lot of your posts lately, and frankly I think you talk a lot of sense.  You're exactly the kind of person I'd want to be in a guild with, but that's not your question.

Since DungeonRunners is going/went offline, I don't know of anything else out there - however for the last week or so I have been playing the best Diablo style game on the internet right now which is, not astonishingly, Diablo2.  It's interesting now going back and seeing how much the Diablo classes/gear influenced the Warcraft lore.

If you're looking for something very D2-like but improved UI/options and better graphics, and if you don't already have it, do yourself a favor and buy TitanQuest with the expansion.  Last week it was on sale on D2D for like $9.99.

--

Now prepare for the responses to this which whine about Diablo2's graphics, TitanQuest's content, and neither of them being "massive" ... Oh somehow Pre-CU SWG will come up, be sure of that.

I've been meaning to post a "the best current multiplayer game" thread pointing back to D2 all week, so I'll just satisfy that need by way of this response.

As mentioned in my post, this game unfortunately shuts down 1/10/10.  It's a great game, I paid the $5 for a while to wear the rainbow drops.  Tongue in cheek humor all over the place, a parody of MMOs / RPGs, and a blast to play.

Sounds like something I'll have to check out.

Nate: http://www.direct2drive.com/3304/product/Buy-Titan-Quest-Bundle-Download seems to be back up to $19.95 for the bundle.  Still an incredible bargain, even if you do find something else.  Give it a shot, there's still an active TQ community including tons of build discussion and mods.  It can also be had on Steam for the same price (Gold edition).  If you buy TQ, do not skip the expansion.  It adds some critical usability upgrades imo.

I appreciate the compliments and your suggestions. My friend and I are online buddies who met in WAR actually. We're both tired of the quest grinders and just want a Diablo style game to play along with Shot Online, which is a really cool and different game. We're not looking to buy a game, but don't mind spending a few bucks for a subscription. I'll reread your thread and take note of the games you suggested. Thanks once again.

I played Dungeon Runners as well, but about a year or more ago. It's a fun dungeon crawl. I actually planned to look into it while I awaited responses to this thread. I'm aware that the game is shutting down, which is why I made this thread, so I can learn about others while I research the closing date of DR. Thanks for posting the date, now I don't need to do the research.

Game-wise? Yeah, but sadly financially it wasn't working out quite so well, despite the devs best efforts.

It was one of the best games I've played, period. Humorous, stylized, it knew exactly what it was, and thats the "Bruce Campbell" of MMOs. It was completely B-team, campy MMO goodness. Best weapon name I can remember? "Spicy Cardboard Axe of Fiery Doom" or somethin close to that. The game wasn't exactly "class-based" because the class choice in the beginning only affected your initial skills and loadout, and you could buy the skills, passive and active, of the other 2, and your Title in your status menu would change based on your choices.

Its a shame the good games get thrown out, while the sh** keeps rotting on the new carpet floor...
