Just be sure there wil be a LOT of paid services.

Blizzard needs very quickly find a solution for the free to play - normal - games they publish.

It is NOT good if they sell 8 million SC2 copies and that people keep playing that game for years (as every Blizzard game was played  btw in the past) and ... that it would mean they will leave WOW (and the much more lucrative subscriptions income).

WOW generates the equivalent of around 30 to 40.000.000 YEARLY "copies" sold ONLY by selling the WOW subscriptions in the west (not even counting China/Taiwan etc...).

NO other game can sell 30 million copies each year, not even a Blizard game, so Bnet is a way to recuperate money.

SC2 is a safe test (because RTS is far far away from fantasy mmorpg), but D3 will be an even greater challenge to "canalise" income.

Interesting and challenging times ahead .... to watch.

Edit: and in the end ... only the best games will get paid/played (as always) for longer periods of time. I was baffled two weeks ago when - for the first time ever - I put in the SC1 CD. I DISLIKE rts. I can't stand the clicking and key rts games. And guess what. ... I played for 5 hours straight a 12 year old game. It is then I knew Blizzard could ran into trouble if they kill their own golden chicken.
To X...: that's the sole reason they postponed SC2: The BNet income fund wasn't ready yet :)))

@Xasapis
The overlay system although it works its not very nice, hard to play Lf4 and alt out to type a chat to a friend playing Tf2, so blizzard system is a better system, but yes limited to blizzard games only.

@Zorndorf
Blizzard will be making money from Bnet2.0 with an app style store, people can make maps/mods for SC2 and place them on an online market place store thingy for a small charge (if they want to charge for it) and blizzard will take a percentage.

I am not against the BNet features btw.

I just pointed out the pitfalls Blizzard has to watch out for when launching their next (free) games.

I for one would NOT be against a playing fee for all future games. High quality games will always sell themselves and I think a small fixed fee just to play very good games is an assurance.

I certainly would prefer a small fixed fee (let's say 4-5 dollars a month) instead of so called "free" to play games in which you have to buy "tokens" for opening up content or gear or whatever.

I KNOW  Blizzard said SC2 and probably D3 will be essentialy free to play and BNet is a free service too.

But I wouldn't mind pay to play games - in all genres - at all.

It weeds out the duds faster and makes for longer lasting gaming communities.

It's SO NICE to discuss tactics, classes, dungeons, maps, fights with RL friends whan you simply play a game  longer.

The present day "life" of a typical video game is 3 months and then it is "out".

Not good for the satisfying socialising. (a good game should be played years).

That's the advantage too for certain games who can stand the test of time (like WOW, EVE, ...) whether you like them or not.

Seriously, so much bitching and moaning over a simple upgrade in how one accesses WoW and other current/future Blizzard accounts.  Do a little research and you'll find the answers you seek!  I love the idea, and if the first thing that comes to mind; which has for several already is OMG all my accounts will get hacked now, then you need to rethink your online activities outside playing WoW.  Stop being a dumbass and clicking on mysterious links sent to you in-game or though email, and find safer porn / cheat / torrent sites to visit if you refuse to protect your PC properly!

Battle.net and WoW Accounts Merger!

What is the new Battle.net?
We are building the new Battle.net to be the premier online gaming destination. The new Battle.net experience is a full-featured online game service designed specifically around Blizzard Entertainment titles, and will include a complete set of around-the-game features including a state-of-the-art matchmaking system, achievement system, social networking features, structured competitive play options, a marketplace, and much more. Our vision is to create an environment where gamers can compete online, develop an online persona, and stay connected to friends and the rest of the community while enjoying our games. In doing this, the new Battle.net will deliver the ultimate social and competitive experience for Blizzard Entertainment gamers everywhere.

What is the history of Battle.net?
Battle.net was the world’s first fully integrated matchmaking service, which we launched in 1996 with the release of Diablo. Battle.net evolved over the years to fully incorporate online gameplay for StarCraft, Diablo II, a re-release of Warcraft II, and Warcraft III. The Battle.net system has been in its current form, without major changes, since 2003.

What is the Real ID feature?
Real ID is at the forefront of online gaming as it will allow you to easily connect, communicate, and play with real-life friends. Connect with old friends and current guildies, and make new friends with the integrated Battle.net social networking tools. Beyond simply seeing your friend’s character names (e.g. “Gorlac” in World of Warcraft or “Snip3r” in StarCraft II), and having to remember which character name goes with which friend, you will be able to see your Real ID friend and chat with him or her across Blizzard games. What’s more, Real ID is totally optional -- the options are there for you to build your Blizzard Entertainment social network however you see fit.

What are some of the communication tools available in the new Battle.net?
Our vision is for the new Battle.net to become the ultimate Blizzard Entertainment social network, in addition to its matchmaking foundation. Simply logging in to Battle.net will make it easy to find and chat with your friends across World of Warcraft, StarCraft II, and future Blizzard Entertainment titles, including Diablo III. Keep track of all your buddies in your friends list, view their online status and presence information, voice chat, send out party invites, and broadcast messages to your friends. Detailed character profiles let players keep up to date on friends’ progress and achievements.

Will classic Blizzard Entertainment games be supported on the new Battle.net?
We do eventually plan to update all classic Battle.net games to take advantage of the new Battle.net accounts and server infrastructure. Beyond this, we do not have anything to announce today regarding legacy Blizzard Entertainment titles and the new Battle.net experience.

Will a forced migration to Battle.net occur for World of Warcraft players?
Yes, sometime in the near future, it will be necessary for all World of Warcraft subscribers to transition their accounts to the new Battle.net system. Those players who have already converted to the new system will be able to take part in the new Battle.net features soon.

What will change in World of Warcraft after the forced migration?
The core gameplay experience will remain unchanged as a result of the migration. However, you’ll be able to take part in all of the new Battle.net features, such as cross-realm, cross-faction, and cross-game chat.

It's not just a pet, it's an award of accomplishment saying I took the time to ground out rep for that group.    Sorry you see it differently.

That isn't really fair Coffee, there does seem to be some fundamental issues at the moment with the process. I registered for my battlenet account two days ago and still have not recived a confirmation e-mail. Have logged back into it, checked all the details are correct and re-sent the e-mail, but still nothing!

You know how big a fan of Blizz and WoW i am, but i do have some worries if they can't get that right from the off. Have guild mates who were unable to access their accounts for anything from hours to a couple of days after this process too, so it looks like they need to sharpen this up before crunch time comes around.

It must be Thursday, i never could get the hang of Thursdays.

aye maybe it was a little harsh, but its was smooth for me and of those of my guild who have done it.

I do work in IT support so often when some on complains about logging in etc the first think that springs to mind is their incompetence as 9 times out of 10 it is their incompetence. =D

I guess with millions of accounts needing to change to bnet 2.0 there will be issues.

Well they'll be testing Bnet 2.0 when they get around to the SC2 beta, and part of Bnet 2.0 is cross game communication so they probably want Wow moved to bnet 2.0 so they can test that too.

As to wether you need to sub back to get the penguin, probably not.

So, to sum it up, you will need to create a battle.net account and link it to your WoW account.

They want ppl who have multiple accounts to add them all to the one battle.net account (and will require it it seems) so if someone cracks your battle.net account you loose all your game accounts instead of just one....brilliant.

Oh, and if you're looking at getting StarCraft 2 or Diablo 3 you'll need to have a battle.net account for that too, even to play the single player campaign.

Fun stuff, full of needless red tape, giving way more monitoring power to Blizzard who's already illegally done a hardware spec pull off all our comps about a month ago which is completely illegal since they didn't give an opt out option. And again there'll be no opt out option, get a battle.net account or have your account inoperable but still billed.

Fucking brilliant.

I heard they hold a gun to your head and force you to accept the Terms of Service too which is of course illegal.
