I'm a completionist when it comes to offline RPGs like Morrowind, Fallout 3, and Oblivion, but  I find myself having a hard time leveling a toon to max level in most MMOs. The last character I got to max level was my 70 mage in WOW (quit before WOTLK came out). Since then I've:

Leveled an ironbreaker to 35 in WAR before I grew bored with T4 and quit.

Leveled a Tempest of  Set to 40 in AOC before I realized that the most fun I had in that game was in Tortage.

Currently leveling a munitions/ice based superhero in Champions Online but find myself getting bored after doing the Stronghold Missions. Will probably quit before I hit  level 40.

And these are the MMOs I've actually put some time into. I've dabbled  with a bunch of different MMOs from Tabula Rasa to LOTRO that didn't hold my attention for more than a week or two.

Just curious if there are other players like me, or do most people at least get to max level before quitting a game. I know I'm lame compared to power gamers who shoot for hitting max level in the first few weeks, but I have to wonder if I'm all that different from a lot of average players out there.

If your not having fun then thats just how it is, boredom is easy in repedative games like MMO's

Most either level fast , then complain....or they play at thier pace, and at least get thier moneys worth by at least maxing out a character.

Depends how much the 50$ for the box and if you stay past the first month is worth to you really..

To answer your question. No i always level a character to max level before quitting, seems like a waste not to ''finish'' the game in that sense.

It's probably just a case of you not liking the games you are not hitting the level cap in.  Some mmos I hit the level cap because I'm enjoying myself, others I just quit half way through because it bores me.

For me it is hard to go to max level in any mmorpg. Usually around the mid level. (30-40). I tend to realize this is boring. Which is sad honestly. I would like to be able to play a game throughout the whole experience. I've done it a couple of times. With the newest mmorpgs out. I can barely get to level 30.

Sad to say.

Who said this won't be perfect after all we know what is right
And the sounds of bodies clashing is enough to make them cry.
You know this cannot be perfect even when it is feeling right.
And the sound of bodies crashing echo through the night.

I dunno if we are in the norm, but I have only lvl'd to max in 3 mmo's... AC2, DaoC, WoW, but I have played them all. I just left Aion in the mid 20's and am currently playing FE.

Depends on the game but I can be the same way.  I hit max lvl in LOTRO before they expanded it and gave up when my guild put all it's effort into the new end game raids.  I maxed in Sahdowbane long ago, Not sure what else and I have played many games.  EQ2 I never  was able to get past 55 and that was my first character - got bored at lvl 45 3 times before finally quitting it.  When it ceases to be fun I cease to play it, too many games not a long enough life to waste on just one.  WoW  I got to 25 once and quit.   EVE - I have played several times and gotten to where I could fly specialized ships but  got bored of either being in a guild and fighting endless wars or soling and being prey to every other player.   I must have ADD.

I have your same problem I tend to get bored before reaching cap on other mmorpgs. The only online mmorpg that I got to cap was wow having 5 70s just like you before wotlk.

Although the difference is I went with f2p and all go to heavy grind near cap or even at early levels but the games you mentioned specially aoc were not done well when launched so losing interest was higher like many.

The mmorpg is different from your average rpg in that it's slower paced. It's meant to be played for a much longer time and most of the time it becomed just plainer as it slows down.

If your ultimate goal is to "finish the game" when playing an mmog you might be looking at the game the wrong way. Stopping a character or game before maximum level is not a failure. I call it taking a break. Sometimes the routine settles in and you don't notice various aspects of the game which makes your learning of the game stall. By trying another game or character, you start learning something new and it stimulates you again.

You'll find a lot of people who have managed to reach maximum level with very limited knowledge of the game. Do you think those people achived anything?

I have had trouble getting to max level in lots of games recently because I really haven't enjoyed many of the more recent titles. I find myself doing other things in my free time a lot these days... which is strange for me. I have been an avid MMO gamer since Ultima Online.

I know what you mean about being a completionist. You know what's relaxing? Playing an MMO where you cant max level, and where there is no skill/XP grind.

So I get to actually play the game. Do stuff. God, it's so much better. It's like having a huge weight lifted off of me.

I find part of my problem is that I'm a bit of an altaholic. I also have a hard time staying with a game if there isn't that much interesting at higher level. Perfect example is WAR - to me the open world PVP at Level 14 felt almost the same as when I was Level 34. The only difference were city sieges, which I found to be buggy messes and not worth the hassle.

I may stick with it in Champions just so I can say I "finished" the game.

Yeah, single player games are what im doing now.  Going to be a long winter for those depending on MMO's with the quality of whats available.

It has to be true, i have internet links.

Just a small question.

In the game(s) where you're having this lack of motivation problem; are you joining guilds (or equivalent social grouping) and involving yourself in their activities?

I find myself completely incapable of hitting max-level in any MMO without other fun people to socialize with on the journey.

I usually join a guild - but the level of involvement is hit-or-miss.  For example, in Champions most of my guild mates have outleveled me. In AOC, I joined about 6-7 months after the game came out and was way behind the power curve.
