A friend of mine has a birthday coming up, and I think that a hand-held console would be just the thing for them. However, I'm not very familiar with what's on offer, and I don't seem to be able to find any decent comparison reviews.

They've expressed an interest in the 'train your brain' type games, so something like that is a must. Being able to surf the internet would be a plus point, as would being able to play music (though hopefully through a headset when I'm around).

Do any of the current/recent consoles stand out from the crowd in your experience?

The Nintendo DS offers an AWESOME selection of "Train your Brain" games. And the new DSi has a camera and can also play music and browse the web.

I had the old "Brick" DS, and they are fun little things. I think your friend would enjoy it if he is on the go and likes the train your brain games. Of course it offers a lot of other fun games, pretty much something for everyone. Shooters, Racers, RPGs, puzzle games, really, it has everything.

The PSP, Sony's handheld and the other major contender in the market, also browses the web and plays music. Although it offers nearly no decent train your brain games and the selection of games for it is somewhat shoddy. Personally, I think the DSi would be the best choice for your friend.

Hope I could help,

For the train your brain type games DS is really the only choice, since it excells in a great number of this games.

However, i fell in love with the new PSP Go, launched last week. Its a step ahead in the portable market, a great console.

Playing: Aion, World of Warcraft, Dragon Age Origins
Waiting for: Star Wars: The Old Republic, Mass Effect 2, Final Fantasy XIV

Thanks guys :)

The PSP Go does look rather nice, but costs a bit more than I'm looking to spend.

I think the DSi would be ideal. I know he used to like those pokemon games about a decade ago, so he can pick up a modern version if the desire appears.
