I can just say wow, this is something new and refreshing, 3 weeks ago when I openly stated that AION is stupid grinder I got flamed bigtime, my post was deleted by moderator and almoust even got BAN as trolling. Where are all of you who flamed me then as how I am stupid, what is matter now, why you do not keep playing your little game anymore? |

Why, because you read that a dozen people on these forums got bored? |

You of all the people have no right posting on threads regarding boredom. When people are burned out by your favorite game, it's something wrong with them, however when they are bored by another game, it's natural? Hypocrisy at it's best. |

WoW is not my girlfriend, are you serious? It's a frigging game, I don't need a substitute to "forget" a game. I repeat, it's a game, a pastime. I could be into mountain climbing and have a favorite top to climb, if I was to climb another, it would be because I wanted to forget the first one? Ludicrous. Perhaps you're projecting and you're the one in need of something different desperately. I on the other hand am playing something I CURRENTLY (in capital and bold) enjoy. Something that will eventually grow bored of as well and will move on to something else. When that happen, I sure won't treat it as it was a relationship that broke my heart. |

Originally posted by Zorndorf QFE~ I will add to this. Games are also hyped externally; aside from publishers, or other media sources, gamers hype each other. AION was supposed to be the 'last game I ever play' for some. I knew AION wasn't going to be groundbreaking, and I wasn't about to get it. I don't hold it against those who bought it, but if you now find it boring, maybe think twice before getting a game ;) Especially a Korean MMO haha |

One of the games that I'm currently following the development is the latest Final Fantasy Online. It is possible that it'll be better than what's currently out there, probably better than SW:TOR. Better as far as my own tastes are concerned of course. But I don't hype myself to absurdity so I get slammed to the ground by the final product. Nor I play the game carrying old baggage around (as much as I can), but I try to keep an open mind and see both the positive and negative aspects. Hype seems to be more of a western thing. There was hardly any hype from the developers of Aion and there is hardly anything regarding Final Fantasy. Same thing with Guild Wars 2, another interesting game to look forward to, very little hype from the developers. How can you blame the respective companies if the fans hype them to stratosphere? |

I've gotta agree with the original poster, and the others following him/her. Right now I've gotten my Gladiator to level twenty and I'm having a hard time staying logged in for ten minutes anymore with out becoming bored out of my mind. I was pushing myself to hit level 25 so I could try the first dungeon and the abyss but I'm not sure if I can even make that. To hit level 21, it takes one-million something exp, I dread to think about level 25. Quests are extremely boring, the flow of the game is linear and boring as well. |

In my opinion people will get bored. If you play WoW for 4 years or any other MMO of similar nature, EQ2, DAoC, LotR, etc, etc, their modus operandi is the same. Different skins, more or less the same game play. Generally if you get bored with one, it will only be a matter of time before you see through the new skins and subconsciously realise that it is the same as your old game resulting in boredom. You may as well just stick with the game (the theme) you most enjoy. Or alternatively look for a game that throws the rule book out of the window and do it their own way. For example Eve and FE. Again these may not appeal to you but at least they are different.

Nitpicking nerds, the MMO Genre is only stagnating because of you. Continous complaining lead the market to be mostly dominated by by a single game in the west, and prety much killed any form of competition, and as a result. Any progress in the Genre.
Have more fun, complain less. Bored ? Form a group and start doing Rift PvP, its loads of fun and a nice change of pace from leveling. The only reason you are so bored is that you got burned by the 'Need to hit max lvl ASAP' mentality of WoW. You should enjoy and take your time while leveling.
Improve Aion's Graphics with a simple text file that you can create by yourself: -Increase in-game Field of View to 175% or more -Increase view distance for players to 100 meters with camera at max distance -Lots of other settings Learn how by reading this guide at Aionsource http://www.aionsource.com/forum/general-guides/84379-definite-guide-aions-graphical-settings-performance-tips.html |

It's actually "the real game starts at level cap" that's been the bane of modern day MMOs. |

It's party the game's fault that has cultivated a certain mentality. It used to be a raid is everything mentality back in the EQ2 days. Or the quest grind is fine while mob grind is not of todays MMOs. Humans by nature tend to find their cozy spots and hate it when they are forced to abandon them, even when it's for the best. I'm not saying that the newer MMOs are better than what's been there before, I'm just saying that the day will come that that gem will eventually appear and people won't pick on it, because it'll be too different and will require of them to abandon their cozy spots. |

MMO'ers love to build things up, then tear them apart in a heartbeat. We're an extremely jaded / fickle bunch of gamers. I think a lot of ppl complaining about the game in this post will never be satisfied by a MMO again, be it SOTOR or FFXIV. |

This game is coma-inducingly boring, repetitive in the extreme and far too simplistic. Christ, there's only ONE quest chain, and they even have a built-in system that actually GUIDES you all the way along it! People mock WoW players for using Questhelper, but the players in Aion positively lap that feature up. How the hell Aion holds anyone's interest is a puzzle - there must be gamers who LIKE linear, hand-holding, repetitive gameplay. |

I think that the illusion forum like this creates, is that everyone craves for something new. I'd dare to say that for most of gamers, be they MMOers or not, the new is not really needed if it doesn't equate with better. Better, then again, is highly subjective which is part of the reason why developers stick with what is tested. You can see number of features in Aion that have been bread-and-butter of MMOs for a better part of a decade (or more). Compared to e.g. the competing recent MMO releases of Champion's Online, Fallen Earth it is Aion which has done best market-wise. I do not think it is a testament of Aion's higher level of innovation which sold all those games but the developemental vein it was following.
You can all tout and champion an esoteric game, say, Love, as the new coming of MMOs and to a certain extent it likely is that but you also have to live with the very human nature. We don't really want changes to happen. For we are much more comfortable with sameness -- that's why the rules of football don't change from one match to another, thou it admittingly would add some new spice to the game. Hence, the progress of MMO games (like everything else) is gradual and on that gradual progress Aion has a significant role due to its sheer impact to the market (much the same as AoC and WAR). In coming years we will see that less boring version of Aion where the current gripes are amended. Or maybe camouflaged better.
In sum, Aion's failure is not per se on its boring grind of levels. It is the boring grind of levels when people know or have experienced a better way. Although the change in the core mechanics of MMOs hasn't been all that impressive, it is those small but constant streams of innovations that push games as a genre forward. Aion maybe chose wrong features from the pool of MMO memes and has now to live with those choices. Some of these features bear a striking resemblance with those nostalgia-infused reminiscences these fora are packed with, dating to the days of good ol' Everquest, Ultima Online or younameit. Too bad nostalgia rarely is actually any good.
Edit: Typos, those dastardly things. |
