EvE is reallly complicated, best advice i can give is; do the tutorial missions, there are 30 of them, 10 business, 10 industry, and 10 combat. They will give you a good idea of what you like and dislike in the game, and you can start focussing your skills a little more, after that join a player corp with similar goals to your own, so you can take part in team missions that you care about.

Eve is about teamwork, as a single player can really do very little. Large groups of players can do almost anything - its very very sandbox later on.

the race and path thing iirc no longer has any effect on the game, it used to alter base stats (which can be changed anyway) but i believe they removed that. the decision is now purely aesthetic/lore preference.

The learning curve is insane.  keep this in mind!!

It helps to research some newbie guides to make sure you know whats going on.

Race is not so much important, because you can eventually learn all ship types if you so choose too.

Also, keep in mind, you need to look for a corporation (guild) because it helps a lot.

Oh and last thing.  You'll need about 1 straight month of skill learning to be able to fly anything half-way decent.  3 months is a good minimum to learn the basic skills you need and also spec into a good ship.

LAST THING!! lol.. join a corp.  or the game will be insanely boring.

PVE is still an important aspect of eve, at least it was for me when I played a little over 2 years ago. Can make a lot of isk hunting npc pirates in 0.0 space. Then that isk gotten from mostly safe pve can be used to fuel your pve. Again what I am saying may be out od date since I have been gone so long.

I think it is best for you to look at what type of ship you would want to be flying in the future and work your way up to it. Do a lot of research on the available ships and the skills needed to fly them, and what they are used for. Also recomend getting evemon, and using it to show what to do to train as fast as possible. It will calculate the best order to do training skills and will even load all the skills for the ship you want to use.

Eve has a lot of information on their forums about all the ships, so that is really the first place to head, and pick something that fits your play style. Whether you want to be a fast frigate and keep other people from getting away. A ship that uses its electronic warefare to keep an oponent from targeting anyone, or maybe a ship that uses drones to do most of its damage. Just so many options over the usual run and gun play style. Then you also have all the different types of tanking the ships can do and some are made for certain types. Way too much to really go into here.

Good luck in eve.

You dont have to be logged on for your character to be learning skills.  That means, you can be casual.  Keep in mind, you need a way to earn money.  So you will at least HAVE to play a little bit.  killing NPC's that are in asteroid belts and looting/ scavenging them or running missions or mining... lots of things to do and tons of ships to fly.  Each have a very different play style.

200KM+ snipers, stealth bombers, insanely fast small ships, huge gun boats, drone boats...

not to mention, you can fit your ships however you want (as long as you have the skills)  So a sniper ship, can be fitted to play the role of miner even.  If you so choose to.

Its just a really large game... It takes time to get used to and it helps to have friends.

Race doesn't matter anymore.  It used to affect how your attributes were divided, but now its all the same.  So if you wanted, you could eventually fly all stealth bombers.  The differences are there, but are not very big.

Amarr have the Apocolypse ship, which is a pretty good sniper.  Keep in mind it will take you about 1 month to step into the ship and 2 weeks to learn to fit it with some decent items.

Another thing,  even if you are sniping, you will have a hard time hitting small faster ships unless they are not moving.  So you have to choose your fights wisely.  Also, getting into sniping position is going to take lots of time and patience.

I went stealth bomber right away when I started, Its fairly easy to get into and fit, but you cant hope to be a god at PVP unless you are with other people or take a lot of time to choose your targets very well.

I would check out all the ships and their purpose and try to find something you might like.  Do this while skill training something that takes 5 real days to learn lol

Cool, caldari stealth bombers are Manticore's and they are a popular choice.  Finding a corp is a bit tricky, I followed my IRL friend who was already in an established corp, so I'm not sure how to go about finding one.

Maybe eve-online forums have some corp recruitment threads.

Caldari is a good choice to some degree but be ready to be raided when you're doing missions and when you're mining, Caldari is where all the griefers reside, you should have gone minmatar or gallente they are the most flexible races. The only one good reason to go caldari is to just breeze through missions. The usual saying is Caldari is Extremely easy mode, Gallente and Amarr are easy/medium depending on how you play and minmatar is hard mode because it requires you to learn alot of skills. Caldari just loves to spam missiles, gallente loves to have the choice of picking things off from a distance, amarr just love to waste energy and minmatar just loves to play lego with everyone elses set-up althought they have an awesome sounding autocannon when you get your rate of fire up that is.

This is not a game.

Don't join a corp until you achieved your goal, just hang around the "help" and "eve radio" channels. There's also the "Space Bar!!!" chat you can join where there are people who'd help you and get you doing pvp and all sorts of cool stuff.

This is not a game.

I've been doing the 14 day trial lately.  My observations:

  • I'm still working on the assumption the game gets deeper later.  WOW has autoattack, and then a bunch of tactical abilities.  My EVE ship just has 3 types of autoattack, and two regen toggles (one for shields, one for armor.)  I'm not even hugely negative on the combat quite yet, because spaceships shooting shit at each other is cool...I was just sorta hoping to see a glimmer of the depth everyone's always talking about.
  • An extremely large portion of my gameplay isn't spend playing the game. I think my time spend traveling must account for 33% or more of my overall time logged in.

In fact I'm "playing" the game right now (or is it playing me?)  My second monitor gets an awful lot of use while "playing" EVE: I browse MMORPG.com, I learn PHP, I play Haven & Hearth, and I watch some gametrailers vids.

My hope is that all of the comments regarding EVE's depth coming from such a variety of players over the years confirm a deeper depth is behind things, more than I can see at first (er, second sorta) glance.  Mostly I'm hoping that players aren't mistaking a huge spam of items and options for game depth.

I imagine it would only take one or two "oh wow, that's way more effective at killing pirates" combat tactics related to me to give me an impression of game depth.  Currently my orbit-at-optimal-range and spam turret fire strategy is suspiciously effective.

Best thing you can do as a new player is joining a corp like Eve University

They take on pilots from any level and will train you in PVP by providing ships and training classes.

Going on patrol with 50 of your co-students is one of the best ways of beating that learning curve.

They have well over a thousand members at anytime and have established themselves as somewhat of an institute in EvE over the last 5 years.

It did the trick for me.

At the moment, Amarr. But there is no "best race", and CCP like to cycle their nerfs and buffs so that no one ship or race or ship class stays top of the heap for long.

As far as stealth bombers go, the best fleet bomber is probably the Hound because of it's damage type, the best small gang bomber is probably the Manticore because of it's 4 midslots and good fittings. But really, once you can fly one, you're a rank 2 skill away from flying any other one.

You might as well pick your starting character on how you like it's looks or background description, as you can train any skill on any race and there are no classes, and all characters start with the same stats.

The most important thing with EvE is to socialise. Make friends, talk to people, ask questions.

The second most important thing is to think about what you're doing. Do some research. Listen to the answers you got to the questions you asked.

Pro-Tip™: Other players will generally fight a lot more effectively than hi-sec belt rats....

Allow me to recommend Red vs Blue if you think you have good ideas about PvP. Anyone can join at any time with any amount of SP and bring any ship they like. RvB exists purely so people can have cheap, casual PvP in Empire. It's the nearest thing EvE has to Arena combat.

EDIT: What you're saying is kind of like saying "poker is easy and dumb and stupid because look I had 3 kings and I beat his 2 jacks and where's the challenge in that?". Yeah, 3 kings will always beat 2 jacks: The challenge lies in getting those 3 kings, lies in knowing the other guy only has 2 Jacks, lies in deceiving the other guy into thinking you only have a couple of treys so he should keep on raising, lies in persuading him to come back and play in next Saturday's game so you can fleece him again. You see where I'm going with this? And once you add in range, tracking, EW, sig radius, aggro, sentry guns, damage types, speed, agility et cetera et ad infinitum you'll realise that there are a hell of a lot more than 52 cards of more or less DPS and tank in the EvE PvP deck.

In EvE PvP, by the time you're pressing F1-F8, the fight is basically already over and you're just waiting for the results to come in. It's the point where everyone lays down their cards and someone scoops the pot. Usually. Generally. As a rule.

I thought EVE was really dull.

The politics though, that's the only interesting part. But it's really interesting and well implemented in the game.
