A pair of leaked Famitsu scans have surfaced and translated over at Final Fantasy XIV fansite, FFXIVCore. The new scans reveal the Lancer job, and a number of new creatures including Raptors.

Check out the scans over at FFXIVCore.

Nothing new here. Just renaming the Lancer which was Dragoon. They had Raptors right ouside of Jeuno.

The more I see "Leaked" the more I see a rehashing of FFXI.

Weapons had to be leveledi n FFXI too. This affected you damage and accuracy with that weapon.

Yes it's different that you can pickup any weapon you want and skill it but all you had to do in FFXI was change jobs to do that. How is this different?

This time you don't have to go ask a moogle for permission to change.  Also you had to level to get past the skill cap.  Upgrade on FFXI.  They're doing like they do for other Final Fantasy games.  Different story and place, but playstyle just a bit upgraded with new stuff added in.

Of course you gonna get some similarities.  It's made by the same people.  They just want to improve on what they did before.

Well if the lancer can't have a Wyvern then its not just the same thing with a different name. So far the only thing I see that is similar is they both use Polearms. Ehh Id be happy with FFXIV just being FFXI but with better graphics and a few new features added in.  FFXI  is still my first love of MMO's and I still can't seem to get over it, but it does kinda take up a ton of your time, so Im cool with SE for making FFXIV a bit more casual friendly.

To be honest I'd be very surprised of the so called "lancer" doesn't end up becoming a dragoon or something because thats one of the classic classes for Final Fantasy that weilds a lance, its just blasfemy not to do it.

I remember in FFX that Kihmari Ronso was listed as a "Lancer" and he was a mix of the dragoon (jumps but no wyvern) and a blue mage (used Lancet ability to try and steal enemy abilities).  I hope they do something along these lines.  Kihmari Ronso is one of my favorite Final Fantasy characters of all time. So much, I got all possible abilities from Lancet, and his sphere grid maxed :D

If you play Risen (a single player RPG) you'll find a lot of similarities to titles previously produced by the same people. I don't see it as a bad thing taking what worked for the original and flesh the out in a new incarnation, while at the same time adding more things.

Although dragoon/lancer theme has been used quite a bit in Final Fantasy games the ffxi version has been the only one to literally walk side by side with a dragonkind(wyvern),  In most FF games the dragoon/lancer was more of spear wileding tank.  They sacrificed a bit of damage absorobtion for more damage(ala spear and jump) and drains (more in the form of single target damge to self heal)

In final fantasy tactics, the lancer class was a heavy armor spear wielding class that had "Dragoon Spirit" to revive him/her on death..no specific dragon abilites.

FFIV Kain was pretty much a heavy armor damage class.

FFV the Dragoon/Lancer class wore Heavy armors and equiped shields, dps/survivability

Edgar in FFVI was able to wear the heaviest armors and equiped with the relic that changed "fight" to "jump" did massive damage and was still able to take it.

Cid in FFVII was in no way dragon related outside of being able to fly(ala Airship), he had higher HP(can take more damage) and did more damage due to his high attack power spears.

Haven't played VIII in a long while(still have to actually play through it fully) so forgot if there was a spear reference in there.

IX Freya was a Dragoon, was a front line fighter, and this is the game where they started to consistantly add single target damage to hp abilites.

in X Kimari pretty much followed the same setup as Freya from iX with some white magic thrown in there if you followed the "specific sphere grid path", also had high HP.

With FFXII they made it so you could train whoever how you wanted and the spears were the highest damage dealing weapons in the game, with and evade rate to compensate for a lack of shield.

Only in FFXI did they take the Dragoon/Lancer type and turn it into a light armor( as in wore the same stuff as a redmage, which although heavier than what a thief wore, was no where near Paladin/Warrior armor) made him a DPS but very bad at taking damage.  They gave them extra damage against dragons and gave the wyvern the ablity to either aoe heal or damage with its breath depending on the subjob you had going.

Trying to put into words what i believe is their chosen path on the whole "Lancer" class in XIV, little hard as I can't really convey to you how I picture the class.  Outside of XI, the Spear wielders were always high damage/tank classes that supplemented their lack of shield with damage to hp skills when needed and faster kills.

Comparing single player JRPG console games to mmo's is like comparing apples to oranges,  but FFXI was the first one to really "define" what the dragoon class was, a Light armor psuedo off tank class that could dps and spot heal if subbed right.  Haven't played XI in a while so if i'm not sure if they've changed that, in the other games the spear wielders(either dragoon, lancer, or just a named spear wieider) was always one to soak up damage almost as well as a warrior and you were hoping was one of the guys getting hit instead of your other characters, but made up for it with well timed damage to heal spells.

Hope this makes sense, read the thread and just had the urge to throw my first post into this topic. Square-Enix hasn't really let us down in any of their games, they may use the same ideas, but it was never exactly the same as game as any they've made before, something always set it apart from the last.

The main website has been updated with more info.  They've released names of some of the warrior and crafting disciplines.  Lancer and Archer have some more info with the rest tagged as "coming soon".

My current theory in regards to the advancement system is that abilities are tied highly to specific weapon types.  Wield a bow, and you gain access to all your bow actions.  Wield a staff and gain access to all of your spells.

Just looked at the OS.  Is the Miqo'te in Lancer wearing an eyepatch?
