Yes I am done with Aion.
I really tried hard to like it, but it is just not my kind of game (yes I know you like it.........calm down and sip your coffee).

I ve been always a bit sceptic toward eastern MMOs, or what I call the "kill 2 million rabbits to gain a level" games, but being an optimistic I really hoped Aion could be the exception.
So I preordered the game few months ago and played beta.
Wasn't extremely impressed with beta, but having a free month included (but mainly because I could not get a refund) I decided to give it a go after release.

I have to say that actually the art style of the world (I am not talking about graphics itself) are rather good, it does deliver a sense of fantasy world which many other fantasy MMO fail to deliver (Warhammer).
The scenaries in Aion are quite amazing at times, until Mech Warriors apperars (explanation on this further down the thread)
But that is the only positive aspect of the game.
The negative issues on the other hand, are quite many.

Let's start with the smaller or trivial issues:

1- The character Armors.............just too Korean (you know what I am talking about, pointy sharp stuff emerging from your body with not actual functionality whatsoever)
I would rather see the classic fantasy Armor set, ala Lord of the Rings (the movie) not the pointless Turbine game.
The characters in Aion looks more like Mech Warriors (see, I told you I would explain it), rather than fantasy heroes.
Also almost all the armors looks pretty uber starting from level 10 (so you feel a hero at level 10......OMG I am a hero, a HERO!), but worst of all they all look similar or rather undistinguishable from one another.
They are different and well detailed actually, but only if you really look at them very close.
But from medium, long distance I hardly can distinguish the classes from one another, let alone a player from one another, is he a warrior is he a chanter......ohhh actually it was the letter box, my bad :(
Plus, artistically they are ugly.
They are well done but not attractive at all, fairly out of place with the scenary, they are just way over the top (my own opinion)
Those armors would look good in Anarchy Online, I can see my Enforcer wearing with pride one of those Aion warrior shiny armors (Funcom take note for AO 2, I want a set of blades on the shoulders of my Enforcerer please)

2- The flying ability
Well, where do I start..................I ll start from the beginning I think.
Flying seems like a good idea, I hear you thinking, and I agree with you......if it only was true.
Problem is that in Aion you don't really fly.
80% of the map is offlimit, and where you can flight, you already forgot of being able to do so and you just don't do it.
But here is also another twist.
Because NCSoft gave us the "gift" of flying (thank you lads, french kissing later), they thought it would make sense for characters not being able to swim, which actually make sense if you were able to fly, although ducks do fly and swim at the same time, so it is not impossible to do both, but let's pretend ducks never existed for the sake of arguing.
The final result though, is that not only you can't fly but now you are not even able to swim, and there is not trace of a mount either, not even a donkey always useful to climb mountains and harsh terrains.
They say you will be allowed to fly more at higher level, fair enough, but I can't be bothered to get at 40 before I can use my wings.
Just let the character "ascend" at level 40 rather than level 10, having wings but not being able to use them is just frustrating and just bad design.
I have a suggestion actually, since we are allowed only limited fly and the armors look like Mechs suits, wouldn't make more sense having some rockets mounted on your back instead of having wings?
At least you can pretend you run out of fuel when you can't fly, but what is the frikking excuse of not being able to use wings most of the time, if we exclude those few unlucky ones affected by acute arthritis?

3- Fucking personal shops
Honestly this is the most annoying thing you can ever put in a MMO, I am aware some likes them (otherwise there would not be so many around), but I just hate them.
When you enter in a city or village you have to get through the sea (if not ocean and sometimes galaxies) of people sitted on a stool selling shit, considering there is a perfect functional AH which does the job 10 times better than a personal shop I demand to know what's the point of it.
Now I understand if people set up a stall in front of a dungeon or close to a leveling area where AH nowhere to be seen, but what is the frikking point of sell stuff in a city when the AH is just few yards away..........just pathetic.

4- LAG (see above)
No, I don't have a C64 which runs on oil, I have a 6 months old DDR3 ram based system, yet as soon as I approach a city or a village I have the time to take a shit, have a shower and drink a coffe before my character reach the planned destination (just few yards away by the way)
Fact is that actually the engine is quite good (considering the good graphics) and when you are in a reasonably populated area the engine works flawlessly.
But when you approach areas invaded by the above mentioned parassites, everything goes tits up.
Just bloody annoying.

With the above issues I could actually live with, if it wasn't for the more serious problems.............

1- Gameplay.
To me is too solo oriented
The first dungeon is at level 25..............WTF
Up to level 20 you can easily level with quests, boring but at least they do the job.
Once you hit 20 is like hitting a wall (actually it was 18 when I run out of quests) , and the game enters in complete Korean mode (the no fun mode, just to make it more clear)
You start wondering around looking for things to kill without reason and by then you start feeling the grind (there s where the famous 2 million rabbits come in action).
Problem with Aion is that it has 4-5 dungeons in all and the first one is available at level 25.
In other games if you run out of quests or you got bored of grinding you can enroll yourself in a group and pass few hours killing shit in a dungeon until you fight the final Boss who hopefully drops uber stuff (which regularly people ninja from you.....but at least you have a glimpse of hope)
None of this luck in Aion unfortunately, if you run out of quest to do, it s either grinding or log out, I usually choose the helthier option...............the second one

2- No community interaction
During my time in the world of Aion I never felt the need to /whisper anyone nor to get involved in general chat, not even to insult people.
I think the last game I played without the need to communicate whatsoever was Warhammer, although the chat is not dead unlike Warhammer (but do not expect any intellectual discussion going on, Barrens talk more likely)
But again, a game where there is no real need to communicate with others is not a well designed MMO in my view.
And the solution of finding a guild is not actually a real solution (I know some of you was thinking it ;) ).
I tend to join guilds at higher level, while I prefer to do PUGs and socialise with the whole server during my leveling.
So a game that force me to join a guild at level 10 in order to enjoy the social part of a MMO is not good enough for me.
You should be able or encouraged (not force) to interact with people in a MMO without the need to join a guild.
That's why I play MMOs and not Multiplayer games.................

3- Too few dungeons
Personally I prefer a group oriented play style, so this is a personal preference.
While I can put up with the odd solo quest and the odd grinding session, my main activity in MMOs is dungeon crawling with a group of friends or even better with complete strangers.
In Aion you will have to wait 25 levels before you can group in a dangeon, and the number of dungeons after that is quite limited.
Of course Aion is about PVP(sort of), but the lack of PVE variety just killed my enthusiasm, hence I could not bring my self to try PvP, shame.
But if the game wasn't so repetitive I would have done that, so it is not my fault.

In conclusion Aion is not actually a bad game (believe it or not).
Compared to other recent AAA games is rather good, unfortunately not good enough to keep me interested.
It is just average.
If you like WoW you could safely try Aion, although as much as I hate to say that, WoW is still a far better game than this one, but if you want different settings and you are bored with WoW (and you love Mech Warriors), this game can entertain you for a while.
But a WoW killer it ain't.

This is quite clearly Lineage 2 plus quests, Aion brings nothing new to the genre and certainly does nothing to address the issues Korean games have in the western market.
Shame, that is a missed opportunity from NCSoft.
Bring on Guild Wars 2 guys........that's more like it.
Although I didn't like GW because it was a multiplayer game disguised as a MMO, I believe Arenanet finally understood what MMORPG means.............so I am confident they will show their Koreans collegues how to make a good western MMO ;)

Well written and I thank you. I've been gameless for a bit now and like so many out there trying to find the perfect MMORPG to play for years to come. New released games are looking more and more attractive as time goes by. I went cold turkey on MMO's and it's not always easy.

I got caught by Funcom a while back with their false advertising and lost some money there. I learned my lesson though and my tactic is to scan  the forums on mmorpg.com after every new release before buying anything. This method saved me from Darkfall, Champions Online and now Aion by you. So I thank you for confirming my fears about the game and saving me the money.

and LOL at mech warriors! I was like holy crap its gundam wing online!  But yeah im lvl 19 now, quests are so mindless and people dont really talk to u that much, kinda bored with it already, not a good sign.

1. There's plenty of game play and quests to find and do at that level.

2. Don't know what your talking about as on my server there is plenty of it.

3. There are 12 dungeouns in between the levels of 25 to 50 so far, plus the fortress instance.

Keep in mind this is all his opition....I much prefer Aion over any MMO in the stores right now. Alot of stuff he states I 100% disagree with so it goes to show that not everyone enjoys the same type of MMO. Theres now way I'd ever return to WoW after playing...nough said :-)

Well I've been around long enough to see all the drama and trolls so I understand what you're saying. But I usually watch some vids of a MMORPG I have in mind on Youtube; usually there will some points that look bad like animations, graphics, etc. So I just travel over to this lovely Forum and read posts of people who have actually played the game and read what they have to tell about those points. If most people agree on the animations being bad I will have the information I needed. The drama part of this Forum is just for my entertainment and I know it's supposed to be taken lightly, hehe.

Head dev already addressed swimming. He said that they have enough on their plate to not justify throwing it in just to throw it in. He said when it can be implemented in a way that coincides with gameplay and that just makes sense then they will consider adding it. Otherwise flying is a tactical decision. You need to know when to use it and when not to. Otherwise the abyss is all flying and higher lvl wings and pots expand the flying quite a bit. But this has been talked about for quite some time and was well known when the game went live.

 You obviously don't understand the finer points of personal shops. They put the power in the hands of the seller, not the buyer. If you see an item in a shop, it may or may not be on the ah and it may or may not be cheaper. So the buyer can't compare or needs to be fast in comparing. If the seller prices fairly or not too high above market he can make a good deal of money. I sell all my mana stones in personal shops and can make a nice bit of coing to help take the edge off.

I believe the first group area is just outside Verteron Citadel which is below lvl 25.

Up to level 20 you can easily level with quests, boring but at least they do the job.

There are already discussions about this where people insist (myself included) that there are quests you are just not looking for them. They pop up when you at the appropriate level. Just had several larger quests pop up which I did this mornign and with a bit of hunting because I'm poor, I'm now a little over 25% through lvl 31. It was about 3 hours of playing.

That's what your legion is for in my opinion. Other than that I see peope chatting in the chat channels all the time.

 Well, besides the fact that is not correct (outside of Verteron is a group area) there are several dungeons such as Fire Temple, Training Grounds, the Mines in Eltinon, The Temple by Golden Bough Garrison and that's off the top of my head. However, the game is new so I imagine even more will be added. I also can't speak for some of the other areas as I haven't explored them as I have with some others.

I can appreciate you not liking the game but some of your complaints are well known and obvious, especially if you played Beta.

Most games coming out are not going to focus on group content, that's not where the market is. I'm actually pleased that Aion has quite a bit of group only content. And of course the pvp can be considered a group endeavor.

I don't get what's that much different from many fantasy games almost all that try to go for fantasy have these sort of type of gears, ever seen world breaker in wow?.

I agree they should add some areas were you can fly in the beginning and maybe some aerial mobs too but the point of flying in aion is mostly in pvp aka the abyss. The more you level the longer you can fly and you can still glide which is not that bad if you learn how to handle gliding to make it last longer (hovering up or down)

Personal opinion ok but I can tell you why those people are there, they are there because AH has a limit of 10 slots got it? Plus personal shops grant a better marketing then AH.

How? people can't know how much X item costs but in AH you can just type the name of the item your trying to sell and see for how much people are selling it.

Personal shops are the best to buy more for less and maybe get profit on selling it higher to someone else.

Yes when you enter a town it takes a few seconds(on my pc) to load the personal shops but your in a place were there's no pvp so what's the rush? it's not like it's taking hours to load.

In other games if you run out of quests or you got bored of grinding you can enroll yourself in a group and pass few hours killing shit in a dungeon until you fight the final Boss who hopefully drops uber stuff (which regularly people ninja from you.....but at least you have a glimpse of hope)
None of this luck in Aion unfortunately, if you run out of quest to do, it s either grinding or log out, I usually choose the helthier option...............the second one

 

And there goes again just because it's from asia it must be a heavy grinder...

If you actually took some time to search in towns you would find quests plus if I'm not wrong there's some dungeon at lvl 18 you could do to earn some good exp there's some quests and some good drops.

 

2- No community interaction
During my time in the world of Aion I never felt the need to /whisper anyone nor to get involved in general chat, not even to insult people.
I think the last game I played without the need to communicate whatsoever was Warhammer, although the chat is not dead unlike Warhammer (but do not expect any intellectual discussion going on, Barrens talk more likely)
But again, a game where there is no real need to communicate with others is not a well designed MMO in my view.
And the solution of finding a guild is not actually a real solution (I know some of you was thinking it ;) ).
I tend to join guilds at higher level, while I prefer to do PUGs and socialise with the whole server during my leveling.
So a game that force me to join a guild at level 10 in order to enjoy the social part of a MMO is not good enough for me.
You should be able or encouraged (not force) to interact with people in a MMO without the need to join a guild.
That's why I play MMOs and not Multiplayer games.................

 

Well that it depends on people, chat is usually flooded when I play with people talking (although I hate it when the wow vs X game start >_>) If you want to chat the channel is there, there are usually many random topics on what it's being discussed, questing with other people grouped can make you communicate, joining a guild can up your need to talk maybe or even when you need some help or for some party.

What I mean it's all there but if you don't want to speak it's not the game's fault no?

Personally I prefer a group oriented play style, so this is a personal preference.
While I can put up with the odd solo quest and the odd grinding session, my main activity in MMOs is dungeon crawling with a group of friends or even better with complete strangers.
In Aion you will have to wait 25 levels before you can group in a dangeon, and the number of dungeons after that is quite limited.
Of course Aion is about PVP(sort of), but the lack of PVE variety just killed my enthusiasm, hence I could not bring my self to try PvP, shame.
But if the game wasn't so repetitive I would have done that, so it is not my fault.

 

If there were many dungeons many wow fanboys would rage on saying that it copied wow's dungeon numbers but I see what you mean more dungeons is always better and I agree with you. They added more dungeons in a patch so it's likely they will add more in the future.

 

In conclusion Aion is not actually a bad game (believe it or not).
Compared to other recent AAA games is rather good, unfortunately not good enough to keep me interested.
It is just average.
If you like WoW you could safely try Aion, although as much as I hate to say that, WoW is still a far better game than this one, but if you want different settings and you are bored with WoW (and you love Mech Warriors), this game can entertain you for a while.
But a WoW killer it ain't.

This is quite clearly Lineage 2 plus quests, Aion brings nothing new to the genre and certainly does nothing to address the issues Korean games have in the western market.
Shame, that is a missed opportunity from NCSoft.
Bring on Guild Wars 2 guys........that's more like it.
Although I didn't like GW because it was a multiplayer game disguised as a MMO, I believe Arenanet finally understood what MMORPG means.............so I am confident they will show their Koreans collegues how to make a good western MMO ;)

Let's start with the smaller or trivial issues:
 
1- The character Armors.............just too Korean (you know what I am talking about, pointy sharp stuff emerging from your body with not actual functionality whatsoever)
I would rather see the classic fantasy Armor set, ala Lord of the Rings (the movie) not the pointless Turbine game.
The characters in Aion looks more like Mech Warriors (see, I told you I would explain it), rather than fantasy heroes.
Also almost all the armors looks pretty uber starting from level 10 (so you feel a hero at level 10......OMG I am a hero, a HERO!), but worst of all they all look similar or rather undistinguishable from one another.
They are different and well detailed actually, but only if you really look at them very close.
But from medium, long distance I hardly can distinguish the classes from one another, let alone a player from one another, is he a warrior is he a chanter......ohhh actually it was the letter box, my bad :(
Plus, artistically they are ugly.
They are well done but not attractive at all, fairly out of place with the scenary, they are just way over the top (my own opinion)
Those armors would look good in Anarchy Online, I can see my Enforcer wearing with pride one of those Aion warrior shiny armors (Funcom take note for AO 2, I want a set of blades on the shoulders of my Enforcerer please)
 
2- The flying ability
Well, where do I start..................I ll start from the beginning I think.
Flying seems like a good idea, I hear you thinking, and I agree with you......if it only was true.
Problem is that in Aion you don't really fly.
80% of the map is offlimit, and where you can flight, you already forgot of being able to do so and you just don't do it.
But here is also another twist.
Because NCSoft gave us the "gift" of flying (thank you lads, french kissing later), they thought it would make sense for characters not being able to swim, which actually make sense if you were able to fly, although ducks do fly and swim at the same time, so it is not impossible to do both, but let's pretend ducks never existed for the sake of arguing.
The final result though, is that not only you can't fly but now you are not even able to swim, and there is not trace of a mount either, not even a donkey always useful to climb mountains and harsh terrains.
They say you will be allowed to fly more at higher level, fair enough, but I can't be bothered to get at 40 before I can use my wings.
Just let the character "ascend" at level 40 rather than level 10, having wings but not being able to use them is just frustrating and just bad design.
I have a suggestion actually, since we are allowed only limited fly and the armors look like Mechs suits, wouldn't make more sense having some rockets mounted on your back instead of having wings?
At least you can pretend you run out of fuel when you can't fly, but what is the frikking excuse of not being able to use wings most of the time, if we exclude those few unlucky ones affected by acute arthritis?
 
3- Fucking personal shops
Honestly this is the most annoying thing you can ever put in a MMO, I am aware some likes them (otherwise there would not be so many around), but I just hate them.
When you enter in a city or village you have to get through the sea (if not ocean and sometimes galaxies) of people sitted on a stool selling shit, considering there is a perfect functional AH which does the job 10 times better than a personal shop I demand to know what's the point of it.
Now I understand if people set up a stall in front of a dungeon or close to a leveling area where AH nowhere to be seen, but what is the frikking point of sell stuff in a city when the AH is just few yards away..........just pathetic.
 
4- LAG (see above)
No, I don't have a C64 which runs on oil, I have a 6 months old DDR3 ram based system, yet as soon as I approach a city or a village I have the time to take a shit, have a shower and drink a coffe before my character reach the planned destination (just few yards away by the way)
Fact is that actually the engine is quite good (considering the good graphics) and when you are in a reasonably populated area the engine works flawlessly.
But when you approach areas invaded by the above mentioned parassites, everything goes tits up.
Just bloody annoying.
 
With the above issues I could actually live with, if it wasn't for the more serious problems.............

1. No argument here, not a fan of the art direction in this game.  Never have been although there are a few pieces I've seen that look cool - the majority aren't.  But I knew that going into the game so wasn't surprising to me.

2. This never bothered me.  You're not alone because it seems to really tick some people off, but frankly I didn't care that were set areas you can fly in or in those areas it's a timed amount that you can fly.  To each their own I guess.

3.  I agree, I hate the idea of personal shops and it was amazing to me that they were allowed at launch.  It didn't take a genius to figure out they were going to be abused to stay in game.  I've never been a fan of them in games because they just cause clutter, potential lag, etc.

4.  Not sure what to tell you.  I have experienced very little lag in this game compared to how it has gone in most others so shortly after launch so sorry can't relate at all to this one.

Next list:

1. I felt it was too solo oriented at first too, but I found this changed around lvl 17 when you start getting quests for the elite area.  From there on out it seemed to be a rather nice mix between solo and group oriented material and from lvl 25 on it seems there is always some type of dungeon or group centric area available to adventure in so really don't agree with this statement past the mid teens.

2.  This community in general terms is terrible.  Very disappointed in the attitude of the players and how they act towards each other.  There are great people you can meet in this game just like any other but the chat channels have been some of the worst I've seen, but sadly I think this is just a continuing decline in how these communities are going in general not something specific to just this game.

3.  It would be nice if there was a dungeon earlier than 25, but as I said before there are the group areas that have elite mobs/bosses that you start grouping for in your late teens so wasn't really an issue to me and there are more dungeons in this game than just 4-5 at the higher levels.  Truthfully, I would rather battle it out against other players in the Abyss or attempt to take over artifacts or a fortress than run through dungeons but they're around.
