Ive tried EVE and it was very appealing to my taste. I love the sandbox type and how its skill based rather than level. What I dont like is that people have said the senior players have a major advantage in it. If I were to play that Id also like to be a bounty hunter or pirate. That being said, Im sort of hesitant with the death penalty. All in all, Id like a game like EVE. If someone could make EVE more appealing then Id consider it more but Id also like to see what other recommendations are out there. All that being said, any suggestions? |

I recently started playing ryzom, its really a great game and quite fun. But like all sandbox games people who started before you more than likely have an advantage, but the community in the game is great and your guild would more than likely help you out. Btw i've heard that a 6month player is as good as a 10+ year old player in eve as you max the basics fast, again i havent played the game so dont count on me. |

Ive tried Ryzom before, back when it was between owners and the player base was falling apart. Actually, Ive been interested in this one for a few years. Even back when it was in the "dark age" the community was absolutely awesome. Is it P2P now? Im just worried it will get shut down again until someone else picks it up and decides whether or not it should be P2P or F2P. Ive also been looking into Fallen Earth, could any current player of that tell me a bit about leveling and such? |

Yes its p2p now but there is a 21 day trial, also there is nothing about them switching ownership or anything and updates have been coming in. Fallen earth is a great game with quite a mature community too, but your limited in what you can do from ability points so you really cant do everything, the game lacks end game like there is literally nothing up there and you need a fairly beefy machine to run the game so make sure you meet the recomended system requirements before you buy it. Both games are great so really its your choice what you want. |

I really like the atmosphere Fallen Earth offers. Have you ever played or heard of a game called S.T.A.L.K.E.R. -Shadow Of Chernobyl? Or its prequel Clear Sky? Well, if you hadnt I ask you to check them out. That is my favourite PC game of all time and I always wanted an MMO that resembled its harsh reality as it is very realistic when you take into consideration the setting. Materials are very limited and you have to find anything that you want, the shop inventories are limited. This is why Fallen Earth has appealed to me so much. What about the six factions and PvP in Fallen Earth? How is that panning out? Seemed like a great idea from my reading but any insight on the ingame aspect of it? Ill definitely download and give Ryzom another go, it was promising even when it felt like it was going to crumble.
Thanks again for the info man, much appreciated. |

i tried fallen earth not very sanboxy imo. The "classes" are pretty much set out already and most people specialise in rifles. BAsically a choice within pistols, rifles, or melee. Not much choice tbh. Crafting was disappointing although it is set in realtiem and has a queue all the items are no even different from another persons. I think the closest mmo that i have ever played that even came close to be sandbox was star wars galaxies pre cu. Crafting in that was AMAZING! |

Well Ive got two months left on Aion so Im going to keep my eye on Fallen Earth. There can still be diversity in what other skills people choose to upgrade right? I mean, not everyone is going to be Serious Sam or Duke Nukem. I was actually looking into what skills Id upgrade to become a sniper type. How far are you into the game? Its not unusual for people to be able to make the same items, look at the standard MMOs. This game wasnt created to be like a sandbox game from what I understand, it just had some similar elements to that of one. Im not trying to bash you so dont take it like that, just saying really. Have you been able to try out the PvP? Also, if you like sandbox, you would love EVE. Its really a really good sandbox MMO without a doubt. Just not what I was looking for. |

so far not a single interesting answer. |

Yes i recently bought stalker but still unable to play because of technical problems but ryzom's AI is very similar to it from what i heard, carnivores hunting herbivores, animals walk in herds, the trees and plants change how they look every season, spawns are based on season and weather, etc. |

Really? Thats a shame, it could be a lot of fun since there isnt much other end game content. Im going to download the trial for Ryzom, sounds like they made a lot of improvements. I loved the A-Life engine STALKER uses, actually challenges you. How is the gameplay all around though? Does it feel like another MMO (click this attack, watch it happen, follow with this attack, do again)? I havent played it in a few years so I dont quite remember. I do remember you can use guns correct? Is it lock-on or free aim?
As for your techincal issue: install the latest patch and it should work |
|

I'm not really the best person to ask as i just started playing 3-4 days ago, but the game is 5 years old so i highly doubt its free aim and i think i read something about there being guns, not sure though. Actually my problem is related to patching, after i install them im unable to play the game.

Probably right, now that you mention it I doubt its free. But as for actual game play, does it feel like click this and watch or is it more intereactive?
Did you buy from D2D when they were having that sale? Which patch did you use? |
|

Well it isnt really twitch based, but its more interactive in the sense that there's blinding, slowing, rooting kinda things just think wow but on a slower pace, a plus is that there's a great variety of weapons. To tell you the truth the combat isnt anything amazing but it does the job, once you complete the tutorial island im sure you'll have a way better sense of what its like then i could explain.
Yeh i did, i used the v1.0001 digital distribution patch and the second v1.0001-v1.0005 unofficial digital patch, i can play the game fine with first patch but the second one screws me over. Seriously how hard is it for them to pre patch the games for us -.- |

Try updating one patch at a time rather than jumping the in between. Also, if you rather this: updated to 1.0001 and download the Oblivion Lost mod. Its an outstanding mod that keeps all the story together but adds a bit more realism and stuff that was taken out of the final version. |

Yeah, I mean I did what I could in the 14 day trials. By actually playing you mean not logging in, setting up some skill to train, then logging out right? I did do that before I went to school a couple times but as far as Im aware I did actually play it. The majority of my time was spent mining and doing what I could to upgrade my ship and mods. |

Unless you thrust yourself into the pvp scene that's all you really can do on a trial. It's too bad, Eve offers so much more than that. Just takes sometime to get to. As for other games Ryzom, Fallen Earth, Darkfall are all good games to mess with. Only Ryzom has a trial however.
Why would I play a pathetic themepark MMO when I could enjoy a masterpiece like Mass Effect, Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Dragon Age? |
|

The last trial I remember playing I was training skills for engineering. From what I understood mining was one of the major aspects to that track early on. I was in a non NPC corp that was for noobs like myself so they were very helpful from what I experienced.
Metalhead, could you tell me how long youve been playing EVE? How hard is it for a new player to be well enough off to not worry about the advantages a vet has? |
|
|
Oh my bad, I read that as player skill, not skills vs levels. I thought you had said you liked how EVE was player skill based rather than based on the quality of your character, my mistake. I'm in the same kind of boat as you, I find EVEs skill system endearing, but I don't like how it is trained in realtime. There is no incentive to play the game other than for money. As a new player you have a lot more options than you may think. You're not really going to be able to solo pvp, but you can do pretty much anything else, including fleet pvp. And you could still be useful to the fleet, not just cannon fodder. EVE didn't really do it for me, so I'm still waiting around for a nice sandbox skill based game too... |
