I believe this person is 100% right, that would be my pick for 3 as well.

if you wnt people to actually level up with id go with Aion for now.

Aion has +/- 5 million subs vs LOTROs 200k.  I don't think they are really close.

who said lotro has 200k? if that was the case eve would be beating it as it has over 300k

I didn't say anything about EVE, but if it had that many then I wouldn't doubt it.  No way LOTRO has more than 250k anymore.

There are other game with huge populations that don't get a hole lot of attention. Take for example Wizards 101. Which has just recently reached the 5 million player mark. So you would have to account for games like this as well.

Not up to date but likely not too far off given the less than stellar retention of new MMOs.

Aion, Lineage, Lineage 2 and Final Fantasy 11

 Aion is 2nd then its probably the Lineage's, Guild Wars certainly, although its a no monthly fee game so theres no way to follow active subs, then FF11, LoTRo and DDO very close to each other

F2P games normally only mark out about the total number of accounts they have.  Its almost impossible to state where they would fit in the p2p model.

ex.

Maplestory reports 92 million users.  ( worldwide )

3.5 million users back in 2005. ( release year for global version )

Still the max concurrent users was ~70k ( july 2009 global version)

I can tell you who I think are top 2, top 3 I can't be sure of.

In '07 Runescape was claiming over 1 million PAID - that's not even the free accounts.
Those were around 4.6 million.

With a difference of today. u=1235139

That's 1,235,139 accounts.

1235139 - new numbers looked at
-1051762 - old post
= 183,377 new accounts from half 08 to half 09

If this number is incremental around 1,235,000+ have been created and you could subtract 100 or less for staff accounts.
It does not count european servers either, codemaster handles those.
It also does not count those subs to come from the near 3 million testers.

200k left as subs sounds low to me. I'd like to see their numbers supporting it for those that cling to such a number.

I would expect they have over that when you count codemasters and don't forget china upcoming while little old AION has already released there. wink wink

Wow counts all 3 markets in the counts I've seen, European, Asian and North American.

What this says to me is as many ppl may NOT play wow as those that do - then there are gamers that play multiple games which every co. involved gets to count. Just look around at the sigs, some ppl are playing multiple games.

actually ye dang i forgot about runescape, it would most likely be after aion. Free realms,dofus and wizards 101 should be up there aswell.

Although Wizards 101 has a free trail and limited free game play not all content can be unlocked until you subscribe. It does have a $9.95 a month sub fee I do believe.

You also have to remember that GW has sold a few million boxes (can't remember the number, but I think it was more than 5) and you have to pay to play it. Although not all would call it a MMO... You also forgot Champions Online, not sure how many players it got though. Regardless though all of this is just speculations, to truly answer the question someone need to find facts about it.

Just to be clear here, Guild Wars is not a Pay to Play game. P2P suggests that you pay a monthly fee to continue playing a game. Guild Wars is a one time payment (and any of the expansions you decide to grab alongside it).

Champions Online isn't all that high up there as far as a player base goes.

but after wow if you include the shooter then theres a lot of shooter after wow and before aion and after aion 

aion is the only mmorpg that sqeezed in that lot ,and aion is very close to third  position
