The only thing left for us to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us...

Spellborn (whatever else you think of the game) has probably one of the most unique, in depth storylines I've seen in a long time. Allods (not released yet) also seems to have a very well established background history and a great story.

None of them. But by the same rational, what older mmo has great lore/story?

This is a bit questionable.  The story that's there is quite good (the dialog and characters are well-presented, and the general backstory of the world is great.)  But the vast majority of your playtime isn't spent experiencing that storyline, so I don't know if you could actually say the game has great lore/story since lore is such a small part of the game.

I may be sorta harsh on EVE, but damn is this a cool trailer (EVE Dominion).

Hmm, i always thought the lore/story were the same thing? as lore is pretty much facts about a thing accumulated over time and as you know in the game we are recovering our memory and keep learning about our past so ye not quite sure what your asking here.

Spellborn has a great lore behind it - with an actual 'history' which seems to hang together and provides a basis for the storyline(s).

The story lines in Spellborn are also interesting in that they vary depending on some of the choices you make (your choice of High House for example)

I would define "lore" as the history and back story of the world.

I would define "story" as the individual story of your progress (game) through that world.

Yeah, they're the same thing.

My point was that Aion has good lore when it shows up.  It shows up perhaps half as frequently as other MMORPGs I've played.

I would definitely say Spellborn, the world is just fascinating and it all starts with the whispering female voice at the game start that says something about how strange it is that the story of humankind was from after it should have ended.

Can't really give it the sense of wonder you get, combined with the realization that the world is a lot of broken rocks floating around in space, remains of a world that have exploded.

Yes spellborn is the only game in the past few years where you REALLY want to learn the story.

pretty much what i saw from it as well.

As far as i am concerned there really is only one game with a great story and that is FFXI.There is only one game that showed a great amount of LORE and that is EQ or EQ2.In both these games, the games are actually significantly reliant on both areas, you experience it in the game on a never ending cycle.

FFXI has it's LORE but it is never really experienced in the game,it is more so inside the storyline. In EQ2 the LORE is actually experienced, you have to learn languages to open up quests, you find books on each race, you learn MASTER spells related to individual races,it is really done quite well.In FFXI's storyline, you actually experience it on many occasions.
